This of course comes from my favorite album, FTR. The music is alive, fresh, daring, and unusually wedded to the perfect lyrics. Her statements are cogent social commentary without being whiny or curmudgeonly, as I find her later work. It immediately sounded like an instant classic upon first hearing, and remains so today. There is a current running through the words and music there that has sadly turned to a trickle over the years. They very kindly offered us rides. Kakki hasn't collected hers yet, but Michele and I went to see them. Once there we found out that they had a Lotus 7 and an Elan. The airport has an open house the first Sunday of each month - a gearhead paradise! I've now put a couple of photos up on Facebook. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA FAR-West (Folk Alliance Region - West) tinkersown@ca.rr.com www.far-west.org ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Jun 2011 04:46:48 +0000 From: Michael quebec Subject: Little Joni in Saskatoon So here I am, in Saskatoon, only to discover that there is hardly any trace of Joni Mitchell to be found here. Sigh.... surely she lives on in the hearts and minds of many of the locals, but I guess the 60's and 70's are now long gone, and with them the physical evidence of Joni's connection to this prairie town. I did find one nice thing today, however. I walked into the downtown branch of the public library, and typed Joni Mitchell into the collection catalogue data base to see what would come up. Happily, they have about 80 entries, ranging from the biographies, to songbooks to cd's and dvd's. It's all here, referenced away, just waiting for the taking. Many of the books were in a special section located on the 2nd floor, where the fine art books are housed. One book in particular caught my attention, because I had never heard of it, or it had passed me by. It's called Heavy Rotation: twenty writers on the albums that changed their lives, edited by Peter Terzian. As you can imagine, the essays vary in style and substance, but it was Colm Toibin's appreciation of Blue that caught my interest. On this Jlist, we are well familiar with stories about the discovery and impact of Joni's music, but it was especially gratifying to read the lines and thoughts penned by a great writer such as Colm Toibin, who shares his personal obsession with Joni's Blue, growing up as a young adolescent in Ireland in the 70's. I urge you to read this, if you haven't already done so; it's very touching, it runs for about 20 pages or so. The other gift the library gave me was found in the local history archives room. On a whim, I approached the librarian there (a stout, kind-faced woman with a twinkle in her eye, who could well be a contemporary of Joni's) and asked her if she had a Joni Mitchell file. Well, indeed she did: two big black binders stuffed with newspaper clippings and such, dating from the recent Alberta ballet all the way back to Joni's high school days at Aden Bowen Collegiate. This was a true treasure trove of yellowed newspapers and various photocopied bits and clippings, pasted together over the years by various staff members, not unlike the clipping books that Joni's mom had kept of her daughter's career. There was also a folder of original photos, including a home snapshot of Joni with a friend, crouching in front of a Christmas tree, undoubtedly taken in some home in Saskatoon in the mid-70's. At the Mendel Gallery there was nothing Joni-related to be seen, except for a few copies of the small Voices book, which is a souvenir of Joni's show there several years ago. No Joni Cafi, although some of the library articles discussed the discussions around a proposed JM cultural centre in the new art gallery. I don't know if that is going to happen. Fotnote : the Mendel is about to close : it will be integrated into a new, larger art gallery building that is slated for the downtown riverfront. So, these are my Saskatoon stories, thusfar. Thinking of you.
