Hi Randy, thanks for an interesting article. But, keeping all recent spam and account hacking discussions in mind, can I ask you and everybody else who has recently been sending interesting and relevant links to the list, to send them with a bit of explanation in the body of the text? Otherwise I am afraid I may not be the only one who is too nervous to click on the link for fear of another hacking attack, and will that way miss out on the real information being sent? Tune in to hear her playing solo at the 1969 Newport Folk Festival, dancing with the Band at their Last Waltz, harmonizing with CSN&Y, and getting a showcase during a Rolling Thunder Revue show. There are also covers of Mitchell's songs and, just for fun, a recording of Dr. John singing "Happy Birthday" to Joni while she was in the crowd at one of his shows. http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/playlists/joni-mitchell-vault-digging/playlist-2845537.html?utm_source=NL&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=110614 Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jun 2011 06:51:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Spam? I've just received another couple of spam messages from another person who may or may not be part of the jmdl. If he is, he may not be a frequent poster but, along with what happened to Lieve recently and to Jack M, I'm kind of concerned about this and what we can do to prevent it. I did get the spams from the fake "Jack" and they weren't sent to the joni list but rather to individual e-mail addresses, including mine. I don't know whether this is because these people might have my info in their address book, or whether the spammers pick this up from some other source, e.g. the archives. Sorry, but I don't understand enough about the nature of this stuff to be able to figure it out but would be pleased to hear from anyone who has some knowledge and expertise of this. what more can we do to ensure our accounts aren't hacked? And what's the best way to know whether this is in fact a case of someone's account having been hacked, or or someone picking up the name from somewhere (where? archives? anywhere else?) and making it look like it's coming from the person we know? Sorry to the Joni-onlies, as I know this is NOT JC, but there have been more instances of this happening recently and I think it's important that we all do what we can to discourage it. I will definitely NOT click on any link to any email that has nothing in it but a link. Albums to remember; njc Anytime I heard a Joni album is memorable for me & I have already commented on how HEJIRA was particularly memorable. So, I guess the first standout album I heard as as whole would be the concert album of Peter, Paul & Mary: the one with the blue photo cover ( Like BlUE ) . I remember I was pretty young & staying home from school with a bad flu or cold & I kept playing this 2 disc album over & over again while laying in my bed. Ok, I just read about this group/service yesterday. I don't know if it applies to a discussion list, or just to websites. It's called Project Honey Pot. (No off-color jokes pls. Ha ha!) Below is part of their FAQ from their website. (It's long, but it explains pretty clearly what all the threats are and how the spammers work). It's totally legit, it's free to use (they do take donations), and while I'm not certain if it is useful to individuals (not just website owners), they do a good job of explaining things. (I haven't had time to read the whole thing--my monitor died so I was offline for a couple of days and just ran across it late last night). Here's the URL if you're interested (100% safe). http://www.projecthoneypot.org "What is Project Honey Pot?Project Honey Pot is a distributed network of decoy web pages website administrators can include on their sites in order to gather information about robots, crawlers, and spiders. We collate data on harvesters, spammers, dictionary attackers, and comment spammers. We make this data available to our members in order for them to protect their websites and inboxes. Why is Project Honey Pot necessary? Each day, thousands of robots, crawlers, and spiders troll the web. Website administrators have few resources in order to tell whether a visitor to a site is good or malicious. Project Honey Pot was created in order to provide this information to website administrators in order to help them make informed decisions on who to allow onto their sites.Does joining Project Honey Pot cost anything? No. There is no cost to join Project Honey Pot. By "no cost" we mean not only no fees, but also no indirect costs from spyware installation or any of the garbage some services try and pull. This is a community-based project to benefit the entire Internet community. If the service is useful to you, and you're in a position to help fund Project Honey Pot, we always welcome donations .What is a "harvester"?A harvester is a computer program that surfs the internet looking for email addresses. Harvesting email addresses from the Internet is the primary way spammers build their lists. Harvesters must connect to the Internet through an IP address. Project Honey Pot publishes the list of the top IP addresses used by harvesters .What is a "spam server"?A spam server is the computer used by a spammer in order to send messages. A substantial percentage of these computers do not belong to the spammers themselves, but instead are "zombies" compromised by viruses or other malware. Project Honey Pot publishes the list of the top IP addresses used by spam servers .What is a "dictionary attacker"?In addition to harvesting, spammers also use a technique known as a dictionary attack in order to find new email addresses. A dictionary attack involves making up a number of email addresses, sending mail to them, and seeing what is delivered. Dictionary attackers typically send to common usernames. A username is the part of the email address before the @ sign. Project Honey Pot publishes a list of the most common usernames dictionary attackers target. Project Honey Pot also publishes the list of the top IP addresses used by dictionary attackers .What is a "comment spammer"?Comment spammers do not send email spam. Instead, comment spammers post to blogs and forums. These posts typically include links to sites being promoted by the comment spammer. The purpose of these links is both to drive traffic from humans clicking on the links, as well as to increase search engine rankings which are sometimes based on the number of links to a page. Project Honey Pot publishes a list of the top URLs , domains, and keywords being promoted by comment spammers. Project Honey Pot also publishes a list of the top IP addresses being used by comment spammers ." The only other thing I can reiterate about protecting your own computer is: never click on any link that you don't recognize as a legit company or person. Always check to see if there are multiple URLs/email addresses in addition to yours before you open a msg. If a msg. from a good friend looks or sounds the least bit suspicious, call them if you can and verify that they sent the msg. Download and install *MalwareBytes* from a trusted site: CNET, http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware or MajorGeeks, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html (There *is*a paid version; most users need only the free one, which is what I use.) You have to manually UPDATE it, but that takes about a minute. They are constantly adding new threats to the database. You can run a quick scan which looks for the most common spyware/malware (takes about 5 minutes on my system), and run the complete scan once a month or so (takes about 18 minutes.) When you install it, all you have to do is choose your language, allow it to install on your C drive, tell it if you want both desktop AND menu shortcuts, and that's it. You don't have to set anything else up to use it. If it does detect threats, one click will quarantine and then delete them. You then restart your computer, and the threats are gone.
