We have a programme called Desert Island Discs on BBC Raio 4, where usually famous folk choose the 8 records they'd take with them if they were on a desert island. The programme have put it out to us ordinary folk to choose our 8 discs and they have been swamped. The team expected a song by Maria Callas or Aretha Franklin or Barbara Streisand to to be the overall top choice of the women in the UK and were amazed that it the number one song is A Case Of You and Joni is the number one artist, above all the others. This is a wonderful confirmation of Joni! I am just having a family get-together (for my youngest son's birthday) and will make sure I tell everyone about it! By the way, Joni was "top female artist", not top oveerall artist. Still, a great result in this poll, I think. (Also, as I have always been a fan of Radio 4 and have defended it here a few times, can I just say that it confirms what a good lot the Radio 4 audience is!) Lieve in London PS They have just revealed who the top 3 chosen artists are: 1) Beatles 2) Bob Dylan 3) Beethoven. More details will appear on their website soon. ________________________________ From: Anita G To: jonipeople LIST Sent: Saturday, 11 June 2011, 9:54 Subject: Joni Number 1 Artist and Song For Women, UK Desert Island Discs I nearly choked on my cornflakes a couple of minutes ago. I only knew Joi's BYT and actually didn't think much of it. My brother gave me Blue for Christmas 1971 ... I played it around 1 in the morning on Christmas Day and remember the experience like it was yesterday. The music swept over me immediately. I caught up quickly with her other albums (except STAS for some reason) and never missed purchasing every one of her subsequent records within days of release. I got a sneak preview of FTR on a college radio and remember calling them to tell them the recording would be titled Asylum (I read something about it's release and mixed up the album title with the label name - hey it was a new label ... and given the nature of Blue her association with JT - this wasn't to much of a stretch). My brother,(not really a Joni fan but thought I'd like it), later told me that he considered giving me one of two artists - Joni or Melanie. At the time I enjoyed Melanie, but am so grateful for his choice. I also remember listening to Hejira, and Miles of Aisles for the first time - but that's because these were planned events and I prepared for the listen (wine opened, telephone off the hook etc.). The only other album I remember my first time listening to was the Cowboy Junkies' Trinity Sessions. Put it on and knew from the opening vocals that I was about to hear something special. So I paused it - got the lighting right, grabbed a beer, laid on my couch and savored every perfect moment in this recording. . - -----Original Message----- From: onlyJMDL Digest To: onlyjoni-digest Sent: Fri, Jun 10, 2011 3:02 am Subject: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #161 onlyJMDL Digest Friday, June 10 2011 Volume 2011 : Number 161 ========== TOPICS and authors in this Digest: - ------- Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 [Maggie McNally ] Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 [Maggie McNally ] Where I First Heard Albums or Songs [Don ] RE: Albums or songs that you never forget when you heard [jlamadoo@sbcglo] Woman Who Rock + Facebook + Joni Mitchell [est86mlm@ameritech.net] HOSL vs. Hejira vs. DJRD; oh, and Mika/Joni reference [Walt Breen ubject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2011 #160 Gosh, but it is great to read about all these memorable albums. Gosh, I really love the way you evoke the atmosphere - also in your other email where you described the venue itself a bit more. I can only be grateful, to have this report is the next best thing to being there. It's really cheered me up to know these things (i.e. the music and the spirit) still exist somewhere today. Lieve in London - ----- Original Message ----- From: kbhla To: joni@smoe.org Cc: Sent: Friday, 10 June 2011, 10:31 Subject: Buffalo Springfield Reunion in Santa Barbara (njc) I am once again completely stunned by a very special concert/event. As most of you know, (and it's seems impossible) original Buffalo Spring field members Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Neil Young decided to reunite after 43 years (!) for a limited tour. They had played Neil's Bridge School concert last November and then played in Oakland, L.A. and Santa Barbara the past week. They are also playing at Bonnaroo in Tennessee this Saturday. I apologize (and warn) in advance for a long, blathering review but it's hard to tell it all without blathering, so feel free to skim or delete ;-) Thank you for your indulgence ;-) Buffalo Springfield was right at the top of my list growing up - right up there with the Byrds, the Beatles, the Doors and more - but they were only together for a few years and albums and then, for various reasons disbanded and moved on to CSN, CSNY, Poco, Crazy Horse, et al. They were a homegrown L.A. band back then and actually played all the local high schools in L.A. county in addition to the Sunset Strip and other local clubs. I saw them at my high school in '67. I was still in middle school but the venue was only a couple blocks from home so I got to go (and completely and happily freak out from the experience ;-) So I again freaked out upon hearing about this tour. The tickets in L.A. at the Wiltern were upwards of $1,000 but the Santa Barbara Bowl seats were totally reasonable so that's where I aimed to see them. My Deadhead hippie friend also wanted to go but talked me into not getting the tickets online because of the 20% surcharge, etc. and then talked me into just driving up to Santa Barbara and seeing what we could get at the last minute for a sold out show. Geez. I really don't like uncertainty in these matters but reluctantly went along with him. He's been to hundreds of more concerts than me and hopefully knew the score. Walking from the parking lot we met a nice guy who it turned out wrote the liner notes booklet for the box set! We stood in line in the first position for a couple hours waiting for any of the band friends' tickets to become available. I watched a long line of the famous friends line up and take their tix, including Stills' daughter and her boyfriend. Then out of the blue a very nice couple came up to us and said they were friends with Joe Vitale the drummer and had been VIP "comped forward" and did we want their tix for face value. I strongly agreed - they were in row 20 center - an incredible spot at this venue. Walked up the steep hill with the very friendly couple and we all joked when we had to go through an ID line to prove we were old enough to buy alcohol. There was virtually no one there under age 50. When we got to our seats we met their friends who said their friends had gotten better seats and informed us the friend was Jay Ferguson from Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne and his wife! Geez! I know a lot of you love Gillian Welch, who opened, but her set was somewhat sparsely attended because all us old geezers were hanging out rapping right outside - strangers suddenly all like old friends. It was surreal - like all 3,000 or so of us all went to the same high school and it was our 1968 reunion and we were all best friends. Truly it was so strange but wonderful at the same time. We did see the end of Gillian's set and it was great and beautiful. For her encore she did a country-like version of White Rabbit that was incredible and just added to the surreality of it all. Checked out the stage - there were probably around 20+ acoustic and electric guitars lined up for the guys. Lesli and Pete's friend Randall from Topanga was right behind us working the sound board! The guys came out and started playing all the songs we know from them -including Kind Woman, I Am a Child, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Burned, For What Its Worth, Go and Say Goodbye, the LONG version of Bluebird, Mr. Soul and more. The encore was Rockin in the Free World by what Neil said was "the way Buffalo Springfield would have performed it." Oh my it was very rocking and beautiful. Here is what struck me the most about the night - the guys (who I have seen over the years in their many subsequent incarnations) were the absolute happiest and together I have ever seen them. It was so stirking that it gave me and others nearby chills. Stills looked 20 years younger, trim and in perfect form, Richie was like the rock who carried a lot of the songs, but Neil was the biggest surprise. I have NEVER seen him like he was last night. So sweet and mellow and funny and witty as hell. I didn't recognize him. Um, like I said to some other friends "there's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear" but it seems to me these original bandmates have been somehow highly inspired and transformed by this reunion and I've read they are writing new Buffalo Springfield songs and may continue going with this. Wow. They played about an hour, 45 mins. As we exited the venue on the way to the parking lot with our new 3,000 old friends the conversations were hilarious. Talk ranged from how many vinyls and turntables we still owned, minutiae regarding Steppenwolf, and debates whether 2 track or 4 track recordings were the best format and more. Geez. It was just the best!!
