As most of you know, (and it's seems impossible) original Buffalo Spring field members Stephen Stills, Richie Furay and Neil Young decided to reunite after 43 years (!) for a limited tour. They had played Neil's Bridge School concert last November and then played in Oakland, L.A. and Santa Barbara the past week. They are also playing at Bonnaroo in Tennessee this Saturday. I apologize (and warn) in advance for a long, blathering review but it's hard to tell it all without blathering, so feel free to skim or delete ;-) Thank you for your indulgence ;-) Buffalo Springfield was right at the top of my list growing up - right up there with the Byrds, the Beatles, the Doors and more - but they were only together for a few years and albums and then, for various reasons disbanded and moved on to CSN, CSNY, Poco, Crazy Horse, et al. They were a homegrown L.A. band back then and actually played all the local high schools in L.A. county in addition to the Sunset Strip and other local clubs. I saw them at my high school in '67. I was still in middle school but the venue was only a couple blocks from home so I got to go (and completely and happily freak out from the experience ;-) So I again freaked out upon hearing about this tour. The tickets in L.A. at the Wiltern were upwards of $1,000 but the Santa Barbara Bowl seats were totally reasonable so that's where I aimed to see them. My Deadhead hippie friend also wanted to go but talked me into not getting the tickets online because of the 20% surcharge, etc. and then talked me into just driving up to Santa Barbara and seeing what we could get at the last minute for a sold out show. Geez. I really don't like uncertainty in these matters but reluctantly went along with him. He's been to hundreds of more concerts than me and hopefully knew the score. Walking from the parking lot we met a nice guy who it turned out wrote the liner notes booklet for the box set! We stood in line in the first position for a couple hours waiting for any of the band friends' tickets to become available. I watched a long line of the famous friends line up and take their tix, including Stills' daughter and her boyfriend. Then out of the blue a very nice couple came up to us and said they were friends with Joe Vitale the drummer and had been VIP "comped forward" and did we want their tix for face value. I strongly agreed - they were in row 20 center - an incredible spot at this venue. Walked up the steep hill with the very friendly couple and we all joked when we had to go through an ID line to prove we were old enough to buy alcohol. There was virtually no one there under age 50. When we got to our seats we met their friends who said their friends had gotten better seats and informed us the friend was Jay Ferguson from Spirit and Jo Jo Gunne and his wife! Geez! I know a lot of you love Gillian Welch, who opened, but her set was somewhat sparsely attended because all us old geezers were hanging out rapping right outside - strangers suddenly all like old friends. It was surreal - like all 3,000 or so of us all went to the same high school and it was our 1968 reunion and we were all best friends. Truly it was so strange but wonderful at the same time. We did see the end of Gillian's set and it was great and beautiful. For her encore she did a country-like version of White Rabbit that was incredible and just added to the surreality of it all. Checked out the stage - there were probably around 20+ acoustic and electric guitars lined up for the guys. Lesli and Pete's friend Randall from Topanga was right behind us working the sound board! The guys came out and started playing all the songs we know from them -including Kind Woman, I Am a Child, Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing, Burned, For What Its Worth, Go and Say Goodbye, the LONG version of Bluebird, Mr. Soul and more. The encore was Rockin in the Free World by what Neil said was "the way Buffalo Springfield would have performed it." Oh my it was very rocking and beautiful. Here is what struck me the most about the night - the guys (who I have seen over the years in their many subsequent incarnations) were the absolute happiest and together I have ever seen them. It was so stirking that it gave me and others nearby chills. Stills looked 20 years younger, trim and in perfect form, Richie was like the rock who carried a lot of the songs, but Neil was the biggest surprise. I have NEVER seen him like he was last night. So sweet and mellow and funny and witty as hell. I didn't recognize him. Um, like I said to some other friends "there's something happening here, what it is ain't exactly clear" but it seems to me these original bandmates have been somehow highly inspired and transformed by this reunion and I've read they are writing new Buffalo Springfield songs and may continue going with this. Wow. They played about an hour, 45 mins. As we exited the venue on the way to the parking lot with our new 3,000 old friends the conversations were hilarious. Talk ranged from how many vinyls and turntables we still owned, minutiae regarding Steppenwolf, and debates whether 2 track or 4 track recordings were the best format and more. Geez. It was just the best!! I am so excited to see B.S here at Bonnaroo. Charlie, Rickie, Joe, and Freddie and I had breakfast with Ben Soilee this morning. If you guys have not heard this man you owe it to yourselves to check him out. We did a gig with his band and Jim James last year in Brooklyn. Such a breautiful cat and it was a great hang. I cannot believe the line up here over the weekend. Last night Mark and I went to catch The Wizard of Oz/Dark Side of the Moon in the movie tent for awhile while we enjoyed our martini. We resisted having a slice of pizza at 2am and crashed early. Need to keep our energy up. See you soon. I'd never previously been to the Santa Barbara Bowl but was always intrigued after hearing many raves about it and wanted to go there one day. Joni was there in '79 for the Shadows and Light tour and and also in '83 for the Wild Things tour. Well, it is really a wonder and true gem of the concert world and I'd drive long distance to see every good show there if I could. It is tiny compared to the Hollywood Bowl or Greek Theater. Kate and Jeff are so lucky to have it as their local venue! It's set up high in a typical California coastal forest. You have to hike up a really steep hill to get there (but they also have many buses to take you up, too). The architectural style of the venue is something like Frank Lloyd Wright meets Disney meets The Hobbit. Enchanting. When you reach the summit and look back down the hill, there is a breathtaking view of stands of distant palm trees, the beach and the wide blue ocean. It couldn't be more magical and I hope to return again soon. It sounds like a dream...reminds me of staying by the beach in Santa Barbara. I'm participating in a NY tribute next weekend here in Atlanta and picked three songs to do on voice and piano - Birds, I Believe In You, and Only Love Can Break Your Heart. Should be a fun time! On my way home from a band rehearsal, playing a solo gig tomorrow for a private party, then another practice on Sunday...busy busy. Also officially on the roster to play at Seasons 52 now. Will have to work up a few Joni tunes. Enjoy the weekend! Sent from my iPhone On Jun 10, 2011, at 5:31 AM, "kbhla" wrote: > I am once again completely stunned by a very special concert/event.
