I have now purchased two of his albums. Fantastic singer and songwriter. I would like to share another musical find. If Joni and Neil had a love child raised in England, it would surely be Mike Rosenberg, AKA Passenger. Mike mostly earns his crust from busking. He financed his own albums from the prceeds as well a recent busking trip to Australia where he met several notable Australian musicians. He recorded an album with many of them called, Flight of The Crow. You know I can't explain things in proper musical terms, but I think my ears do work! The beginning of For The Summer, the guitar strumming and the way of singing, is pure Neil. But there are definitely some Joni moments! Listen to the unusual melodic turn when he sings these words (in capitals): I could slow DOWN for a while... ... leave all those long and lonesome miles BEHIND... Those "down" and "behind" are real Joni phrasings! Now maybe a better musician can put that into professional language, but my ears have not let me down! And I can imagine that for a musician, it is not difficult to copy this sort of melodic turn, so that on its own is not a strong reason to like the song. Just because I like Joni's music, does not mean I want all other musicians to sound like her. But I do like the song, it works very nicely. Maybe not very originally, but it's good to hear. He is indeed very humble and I believe he's also extremely shy. He stays over to the side of the stage which was kind of unfortunate for us, since we were towards the side in a balcony, so it was very difficult to see him. However, he sounded great! I'm pretty sure he was there. ;-) I also want to give props to the opening acts: The Secret Sisters and Brandi Carlile. The Secret Sisters are Lydia and Laura Rogers of Mussel Shoals, Alabama (Ha! I wrote Muscle at first and that didn't seem right!) who sing beautiful, old-fashioned, sweet country/folk-type songs, with harmonies similar to the Everly Brothers. Check them out at Youtube. Here's one I found that doesn't force you to watch an annoying ad first: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v6LojaxpCdw And Brandi Carlile puts on a great show. Even though she was an opening act and only did five or six songs, she has a lot of fans in Toronto and the crowd went wild and I can understand why. I had heard of her (although I got her mixed up with Belinda Carlisle) but wasn't familiar with her music. And yet, one song she sang sounded familiar, so I know I've heard her before. This is the song: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8pQLtHTPaI and yes, there is an ANNOYING ad at first but you can skip it after three seconds. She is very at home on the stage and had the cheek to go up to the front of the stage and do one song without microphones - that's how well she understands acoustics and her gift and so on. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: Gerald Notaro > To: Paul Ivice > Cc: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Thu, June 2, 2011 8:35:12 AM > Subject: Re: Ray LaMontagne > > Paul, > > I am a huge fan of Ray's. Melissa here in Sydney, de-lurking to ask a favour. A while back, Bob (I think) posted a link to download George Michael's cover of Edith and the Kingpin. I love George's voice (I think he's vastly under-rated as a a singer) and reckon this version is a cracker. I seem to have lost it in a recent migration to a new computer. I'd be happy to buy it, cause I love it so much, but it doesn't appear on iTunes. Does anyone have a version they could share with me?
