It was actually a double-bill with a bluegrass band called The Del McCoury Band. Del McCoury is perhaps best known among rock fans as the guy who does a great bluegrass version of Richard Thompson's "1952 Vincent Black Lightning". When I learned that the 2 bands had collaborated on a CD, I wondered how in the world that could work. The answer is "very well". There are plenty of songs where the trumpet isn't going full blast, to leave some room for the mando, fiddle, banjo, & acoustic guitar. I especially enjoyed the interplay between the clarinet (from the PHJB) and the fiddle (from Del McCoury's band). The guy on fiddle was largely responsible for marrying the 2 genres together (in my opinion) because bluegrass fiddle isn't far from Texas Swing, and Texas Swing isn't far from Dixieland. I posted a picture on my Facebook page. (Muller, I sent the picture directly to you because I think FB is blocked in China.) I have always had the Preservation Hall Jazz Band on my "bucket list" and now I can check that off. Last night, I had to drive back to Columbus after the show. I'd go again, but next time I'd plan in advance so I can spend some time catching up with my generous host, Michael Paz.
