How about hundreds of news stories and warnings? In the Headlines: Facebook PLEASE SEND ME MONEY Scams on the Rise Posted by: Neal OFarrell on July 13, 2010 In: In the Headlines Comments The FBI recently warned of a spike in a scam where crooks pose as a real Facebook user and contact all that users friends with a convincing plea for money. The story often involves travel to a foreign land, where the fake victim claims they have been robbed at gunpoint, their wallet or purse gone (along with money, credit cards, and passports), and they desperately need their friends to wire them enough money to make it home safely. And the crooks can get even more brazen and creative. In one case, a crook actually called his victims grandmother, and, claiming his voice was different because he was sick, persuaded grandma to send him some money to help bail him out from a gambling debt. Apparently the crook had used freely available information on the victims Facebook page to learn more about the victim, his background and his family, to create a clone convincing enough for grandma to fall for. The NBC affiliate in Los Angeles recently told the story of how a hacker broke into a users Yahoo! account, stole a photo of the individual and then used it to create a fake Facebook page. The crook also used the victims Yahoo! address book to contact all the victims friends with a convincing story about how the victim and her family had been robbed in London and needed some money sent to them so they could get home. Lessons learned? If youre not used to your friends or acquaintances asking you for money, especially in unusual circumstances, from unusual places, or for unusual reasons, take the risk of fracturing the friendship and just say no. If youre still not sure, find some other way to determine if the friend really is travelling or doing whatever else it is theyre claiming. Keep to a minimum the information you post on any social networking site, and be especially careful about posting family stories, history, photos, and names. Change your passwords often, especially your email and Facebook passwords, and make them as hard to crack or guess as possible. And this one: Facebook scam: please send money to a friend in need By Mary Schwager, News You Can Use Examiner August 18th, 2009 2:03 am ET The scammers just never cease to amaze me and every time I think I've heard "them all" another scheme surfaces and I just shake my head. Today one of my friend's Facebook posts warned she got hit up in a FB instant messaging scam. Frances Connors was surfing the popular social networking website when the ding of an instant message alert sounded. It was from a pal and the online chat started off with innocent chit chat. Then Connors was shocked when the web dialog drastically changed. "She says that she is in trouble. I'm immediately concerned. Little by little she gives me the details. She is in London (believable) and that she is stuck there. The e-mail is disjointed as if she had been partying (believable). She tells me she was robbed at gunpoint, her credit cards, phone and cash stolen. She asks if she can ask a favor of me. She needs tickets to get her (and her family) out of there. She needs cash and she'll pay me back tomorrow." Conners said she was, "weirded out" but continued the chat. "I'm giving her other possible solutions. Meanwhile I'm on the phone calling her closer friends. No one can reach her, but no one knows about the London trip. Finally, I tell the person I'm calling the police. They immediately disappear." Luckily Conners didn't send any money. Within moments of Conners posting her warning, another one of her Facebook friends, Julie Thorton, got hit up. "Same thing JUST happened to me-just 2 minutes ago-posing as a mutual wellness friend. Watch out, there are hackers popping up as instant messaging, same story-everything!" There's many different ways hackers can crack and account. Sometimes you're lured to a website that appears to be part of Facebook. Other times the crooks crack the password to another one of your accounts and then try it out on Facebook, hoping you use the same one. So be careful where you surf, use different passwords on different accounts, especially you use online banking. And most of all, if a friend appears to tug at your heart strings with a sob story, asking for money, watch out! And HUNDREDS of others. I feel bad about having a NJC thread with my name in the heading, so feel free to add NJC in any reply, but I thought it may have been decided to leave the NJC off to make sure everybody can benefit from the advice. I just want to say: I am not on FB (as most of you know!) and have never given my yahoo password to anyone, so it is a mystery how they've managed to hack into it. From the account details which thankfully I can now access again, I can see that the account was accessed during the night several times from Nigeria, and once from California, probably a related person. Until just now I was unable to receive emails in my inbox, but I have now also solved that: I did find, after all, that there was a feature called "forwarding and POP" and under forwarding those b!stards had put what looked like my email address, but it had "lleve" instead of "lieve" in the address. Now that I have changed it, all seems OK again. It does mean that anything that was sent to me today before I made the correction of the forward address, has been lost. So if anything like this happens to you: first of all get your access back by speaking to the telephone helpline (the UK number is 00448000289562, it was not easy to find!) and they will reset your password, and then make sure that in your account settings your mail is not still being forwarded to a different but innocent looking address! I hope this is useful, and again so sorry for the bandwidth. Thanks for all the help and advice, even if it never reached me or if I will stumble across it much later when I have time to go to the smoe website and catch up on digests. Would > it be necessary to have their password? This could happen to anyone. Well, technically speaking no one "hacks into" anyone's account. It's mostly done via "phishing", i.e. the person enters her/his user name and password voluntarily on a web page that resembles the original one. Then the phishers will change the password and use your account for messages like the one Lieve did not send herself (you could find that out in five secs by taking one or two sentences from that message and search it on Google - you will get thousands of hits!) I disagree with "this could happen to anyone". It does take the account owner entering the data on such a page. You can detect what page you are on, it's not rocket science. Check whether the web page address starts with https (not just http). If you get a mail which asks you to click on a link, make sure you have switched off the cute HTML view and have it set to "plain text" - that way you can see that the link will lead to a totally different page. A very simplified example: www.jonimitchell.com leads to Moni but not Joni;))) - which is apparent if you can see plain text. It's also more convenient to use a mail program than the web client, although that feature is NOT available for Yahoo Mail users unless they are paying 20 bucks a year for something that is free with GMail or Windows Live Mail etc... Using a program like Thunderbird: http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/thunderbird/ and setting it to "plain text" view will enable you to easily spot any link that is fake. It is also available as a portable version (from www.portableapps.com), so you can take it with you on a USB drive when traveling. Apologies if you have this message twice Anita Dear friends, I hear from Anita that the problem of my email hijack has been discussed, so I am sending this message in the hope of some more advice. (I have only just opened this gmail account which I don't intend to use any longer once my yahoo problem is solved, but please for the time being send your advice there.) First of all many thanks to Anita and Les, who was the first to alert me to this grizzly problem. For security reasons I won't say too much about my current whereabouts, but I had certainly other plans for this day which I've all had to cancel! After a lot of phone calling and hair pulling, I have my yahoo access back and can send messages out, but can't see any messages coming in. (I know people have definitely sent me messages, but they don't appear in my inbox.) I tried to check if the hackers - who reside n Nigeria, as I can see from my account history - had diverted my incoming messages to a different address, but as I have a simple free yahoo account and not the paid-for yahoo Plus, I don't even seem to have that feature available, so I don't think that's the explanation. I have called yahoo but they said this sort of problem has to be dealt with by submitting an error report on-line which I have done, so I am just sitting here waiting for a response (which is also why I had to set up this alternative email address, so that yahoo can contact me if they can't get my inbox to work). If anyone has a solution to this problem, please let me know because I am not at home and very lost without my email accunt properly working! Many thanks and many hugs, Lieve ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 10 May 2011 17:39:58 +0100 (BST) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: Re: Message from Lieve NJC Thanks Anita but in the meantime I have already sent a more up-to-date message to the list as I have made more progress.
