So I thought I would throw something out there... I just watched the "Legends of the Canyon" the other night. While it certainly had moments, I found it to be pedestrian and ultimately confused. Having watched it shortly after watching the equally engaging and disappointing "Troubadours" documentary, I realized that the music that taught me, that inspired me, that gave me insight into myself and others - those musicians will soon be sailing into the West. While books like "Girls Like Us", "Will You Take Me as I Am" and some biographies give us an understanding of the demons and heartaches that drove these gifted musicians to creative heights, our era calls for audio-visual histories. It occurred to me that we need a truly accomplished documentarian to do for the music of this period what Ken Burns did for jazz. Or at the very least, we need an analogue for music like the "Actor's Studio". Not a dullard like Charlie Rose but a knowledgeable, thoughtful interviewer who can be respectful but ask the tough questions of Joni, Bob, Joan, James, David, Leonard, Graham, Stephen, Neil, Judy, Jackson and all the rest of the creative forces who shaped music, politics and cultural life for so long. And before they are all gone - or can't remember. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 May 2011 18:26:29 -0700 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: We need an oral historian Some great ideas here! But that definitely is the horse's rear-end taking up most of the picture. Joni's take on fame and the music business that we first caught a glimpse of in the song 'For the Roses' might be represented here. The fish could be a reference to that poem she wrote when she was a youngster about fame being like a gold-fish bowl. Marilyn Monroe's image is arguably the most recognizable icon of fame and glamour. To me, that eye and mouth that make up most of that piece of a face are much more similar to Marilyn than to Joni. And the women might be the 'fancy women in 30s evening gowns', finely tuned like that 30s era looking car probably is. I don't know much of anything about the year, make and models of cars from any given decade so I could be totally wrong there.
