Joke or no joke, I do think it's a relevant topic. Especially for those not from the same culture who might not know any of this history. Historically, in many cultures, garlands or wreaths of flowers and, in particular, roses, are associated with horse races (also death). Wreaths of roses were also awarded to winning jockeys of horse races in Australia too. A recent colleague of mine purchased a wonderful coffee table book filled with amazing old photographs from around Sydney from centuries past. It focused on the Eastern Suburbs where there is a famous race course - Randwick. There were pictures of hoards of people in 19th century finery riding trams to the races. Ladies in those crisp white, floor length dresses, bodices and sky high hats with feathers and flowers adorning them. Among the pictures were jockeys with wreaths of flowers around their necks. I think a lot of us do take certain things for granted, or else we make up explanations that work for us. (I know I do.) A classic example is the reference to Javex bottles on the tide in "Banquet." I knew what that meant and assumed most people would. It was only by joining the jmdl that I learned that Javex is a brand name for bleach that is (or was?) used only in Canada. Is there a Joni drawing in the album version of FTR, or is is in the music box, that shows a horse with flowers around its neck? I don't think I'm making this up, but I no longer have the LP and I'm not sure where my songbook is. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: Mark-Leon Thorne > To: notaro@mail.usf.edu > Cc: joni@smoe.org; Mark > Sent: Sun, May 8, 2011 3:20:17 AM > Subject: Re: Run for the roses > > Frankly, I find this stuff fascinating. Just looked it up on JoniMitchell.com and that's what it says. It was done with felt pen and the title on the website page is "Judy Collins in the Dressing Room".
