Kind of, because at least Jacob mixed it up a LITTLE. Scotty does what he does pretty well but he's a predictable 1-trick pony. Anyway, here's my report: Haley: House Of The Rising Sun - she conjures up that inner Janis again and nails it. Rocks the house. Want to deduct points because she's wearing pants but I'll let that slide. Very little pitchiness, lots of spirit, I enjoyed it. She's sensing victory and going in for the kill. You and I - thought she was going to do the Yes song, that would be way cool! But no, its some Lady Gaga thing. Smart move on her part, That's the right target for this competition, but this didn't sound that good. But what can you compare it to? Another reason it was a smart move. Get the crown ready. Jacob Lusk: Love Hurts - (A hint, Jacob - not if you use some lube) A couple of weaker moments but I dug it. Brought a heaping helping of soul to what I think of as a rock ballad (Nazareth). Or a mid-tempo pop/country ballad (Roy Orbison, Everly Brothers). He did go over the top a bit but he's Jacob. No Air - I like his lower-voice moments a lot more than that falsetto + scream thing he does. Not a good song choice for him. Plus, he rarely looks like he's enjoying himself at all; it's like he's singing to do some kind of penance and suffering. Oh well, Jacob - hope you enjoyed your 15 minutes of fame. James: Without You: Uh-oh, pressure's on as he's taking on one of my favorites. I love to hear him RAWK but I think he realizes that since rockers never win AI he'd better pop it up a little more. He struggled on a couple of changes but he had a tear coming out of his eye. Hard to fault someone for feeling the emotion of a song so much that they're moved to tears during it. And this is a good test of vocals - some of those highs are WAY up there. Loved it. Closer To The Edge - Another Yes song? haha, "lemme hear you scream"? James, you're not a barker running the tilt-a-whirl at the State Fair. But he gets credit for going sleeveless and having the guns to do so. And also thinking smart, playing to the teenybopper voters and cranking out a pop-metal Jonas Brothers sort of song as opposed to something too heavy; after all, we know he can pull that off. Didn't like the song but I thought he sounded great. Lauren: Unchained Melody - Hey, Joni did this one! And so has everyone else.Oops, she couldn't hit that low note on "long, lonely time" and did a cheat to take it back to her range. Overall OK, all the melisma and fluttering was pretty predictable. Flat On The Floor - Not a good start when she raises her arm to start up the band with a 1-2-3-4 and you see that upper arm waddle like my Gramma's. Unlike James, sleeveless is NOT a good look for her. Like her other song, she struggled with the lower notes. She was having fun with it but I think she goes next week. Scotty: Always On My Mind - Well, I could hear this one in my head before he even started, and it sounded just like I thought. Boring and predictable, but then so are the rednecks that buy this sort of thing. At least he wasn't holding the microphone sideways like a piccolo. Gone - Does Scotty REALLY need to do TWO songs in one night when there's NEVER any line of distinction between them? When this one kicked off I thought it was going to be something different, but it was a 33 Scotty record played at 45. Also suffered the "back-up singers kicked your butt" syndrome. Won the night: James, although these were not his best. Lost the night: Jacob, but points for taking some risks So Lauren goes next week, then Scotty, then James - Haley wins. Jacob comes out of the closet. Scotty becomes a pretty decent country star, James joins Slash and fronts a Guns & Roses cover band, Lauren finishes school, gets married and shows her kids pictures about when Mama was on American Idol. Haley's career sputters and never really goes anywhere until she poses for Playboy when she's 27 and then she releases a comeback album which also flops. She does a shopping mall tour of middle America, lands some bit parts on shows like CSI Miami and that's about all we hear from her. Them's my predictions, and I'm sticking to them - for a week anyway. Definitely the high speed tour but gives an idea of the place. Over the years I drove up Lookout Mountain road (off Laurel Canyon Blvd.) a few times trying to pinpoint Joni's "Our House." Had the house number from a 60s music book but the yards are all overgrown and the numbers are obscured. The amazing thing is that the house I thought it was IS the house! I wasn't sure because it's more than a bit weathered looking, but that is it! Laura, I'm so glad you did the tour! The owner of the Canyon Store is such a trip - he is a veritable local tour guide, knows every last historical detail and actually gave me a lot of info once when I stopped in. Back in the 60s, one of my best friends was staying in LC with one of his professors. He was in LA to meet with a lawyer who was helping him with military draft issues, pre-lottery. He was standing in line at the store and found Joni right behind him! They had a great chat. I've taken Victor, Hell from NZ and I think, Catgirl, to the Pace restaurant and always highly recommend it. Tiny, tiny space but has fabulous food and sometimes live music. If you haven't been there, you can't believe just how close this rustic, rural area is to the bustling Sunset Strip. Just blocks away. It is a great and wonderful contrast in the city. Em - I used and overused the word "neato" endlessly back them LOLOL! Maybe we will bring it back ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 May 2011 18:30:34 -0700 From: "Mark" Subject: Run for the roses Brian Williams just said 'tomorrow they run for the roses' on the evening news.
