What a treat. I always assumed Scorsese filmed the whole concert and that Joni's other songs existed in some vault somewhere. I always hoped that the complete concert might one day be officially released on DVD or BluRay. These clips were shot in SD and black and white, filmed from the side of the theatre and on a tripod. Not sure if it's film or video. I assume the camera person was part of Scorsese's crew. I could watch Joni tune her guitar for days! Such beautiful chords as she tuned up for Coyote! The guitar version of Shadows and Light sounded almost sultry and bluesy--much better than the farting synthesizer of the recorded version. If anyone has more info about these versions of the songs, I would love to know. BTW: Can these clips be downloaded? I tried, but failed. I assume Wolfgang charges money for these clips. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 May 2011 09:56:59 -0400 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: Tina Dico vine njc I think the answer is in Siquomb herself. How many genres does she overlap (bob I love the Venn diagram analogy) ... I am a dyed in the wool prog rocker, so Joni appeals to my classical music/rock opera-thematic album mentality. So I am not drawn to the similar traditional folk artists (Judy Collins/Emmy Lou Harris) as much as the art rock-influenced artists (Peter Gabriel/Steely Dan). I think I can appreciate why those other artists are incredibly wonderful, but when I put on music, I go for my preferences first. The sensitivity is still there. My favorite band right now is Porcupine Tree, which I'm not sure how many people here would say is their favorite. I mean the reason the JMDL exists is we have a common sensitivity, and i've felt it in all the jmdlers i've ever met or read. So logic would tell me that this common love for such an original artist as Joni would translate into at least somewhat similar musical tastes. So how do you explain when there is nothing in common music-wise except Joni? Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 May 2011 10:00:44 -0400 From: James Leahy Subject: Re: May 4 1970 Thanks for remembering, Steve, and for making me remember: I went to New York City that weekend. My friend Rob and I had taken the bus (the bus!) from Toronto to see the Mothers of Invention at the Fillmore East. Rob was really into recording concerts with his portable Uher reel-to-reel and recorded the whole concert (among other things, he also recorded several years of Mariposa concerts back in the late 60s and early 70s, including Joni's performances--too bad we're not in contact anymore). I remember New York being a chaotic, messy, and highly charged city that weekend (but wasn't it always back then?). We hung out for a while at a student lounge at NYU. The atmosphere was electric. At the box office to pick up our tickets, a drug dealer threatened my life. Before the show started, they announced that there was a bomb scare and we all had to stand up and look under our seats for bombs. We all thought it was cool and fun! After the show, Rob and I tried to get backstage to meet Mr Zappa, but were unsucccessful. Rob wanted Frank to know about the then-unknown Jean-Luc Ponty and left a tape for him. I remember all the stores in Times Square selling clothes that featured the 'Stars and Stripes': everything was red, white, and blue. To while away some time, I ducked into a movie theatre to see something called "Hi Mom" directed by a guy named Brian De Palma and starring an unknown actor called Robert De Niro. The movie involved a lengthy scene in which audience members at an avant-garde theatre event were led through an abandoned factory and subjected to humiliation and abuse. Ahhh, the good old days, eh? It was nice to be so young and impervious to stress. We seemed to take all the change and upheaval for granted. My nervous system could never handle that much stimulation today. A brief synopsis of last night. The themes were: something new that nobody knows, something old that everybody knows. Yes, we got double helpings of each idol. James started it off with a song by 30 Seconds to Mars. He was so off-key I was shocked. It was, in a word, awful! I'm a little concerned at this point. Jacob followed with the Chris Brown song No Air. How he got away with that, I don't know, because everybody who listen to current radio knows this song. Anyway, he sang both parts of the duet. It was also off-key. I began to wonder about the sound on the stage, if maybe they couldn't hear themselves. Lauren picked up the pace with an energetic version of Carrie Underwood's Flat on the Floor. It really suited her well and she was finally fearless. Good for her. Scotty did a song called Gone. Let's hope this isn't yet prophetic. Frankly, he stretched just enough, adding a touch of rock to his vocal and stage presence. He honestly looked like he was having fun. Haley did an unreleased Lady Gaga song. Although her vocal was fine, it's clear why this song remains unreleased. So, it was disappointing because the song sucked. So, that was part one. Ready for round 2? James sang Without You (you know it from Nilsson). But first we were shown a 'package' (when did package replace video?) in which he became so emotional he left the studio and sat outside sobbing - apparently the pressure is getting to him and he misses his wife and kid. Anyway, he (barely) held it together to give a credible performance. Not as good as it should have been, but could explain his previous off-key effort. Jacob sang Love Hurts. And it did. Oh, he started off ok, but then was off to the races. He became very emotional, even stomping his foot a couple of times. It was a train wreck. If he doesn't depart tonight, VFTW has more followers than I feared. Lauren followed her feisty earlier performance with a very disappointing Unchained Melody. I kept hoping she'd break into Chinese Cafe. Hey, I can dream. Scotty sang You Were Always on My Mind. Now, I don't care for this song. But Scotty made me like it. It was melodic and I wished I'd never heard any other version, because I'd like the song if this were the only version I'd ever heard. Haley finished the evening with The House of the Rising Sun. I thought, "oh no!" But she brought energy to it and was just inventive enough. She got a standing o from the judges. So, predictions: Jacob is sent packing. (please) James will be able to be seen sweating as he worries about tonight's results. Steven Tyler will continue to check his iPhone, which has an app to count down how many more weeks he has to sit on the panel. Randy will say "in it to win it" at least 3 times. Since it was an opening act, she came to conquer an audience that was totally foreign to her material. I'm the kind of listener who usually cannot hear the same thing less than 6 months apart or i get tired. Truth is i cannot get Tina's songs out of my head for 1 month now. I'm sending the dvd to Gerald Notaro tomorrow. Hopefully we'll be hearing some reviews as the dvd travels from home to home, and maybe you will agree to give her another chance? I don't think she's too far apart from Ani. Worst case is you'll enjoy Tift Merritt. Last night i saw Peter Mulvey, a great guitarist from Milwaukee, very subtle and writes beautifully.
