Phoebe's voice also etched its mark on my sensitive teenage mind, all those years ago in Belgium. Just proof that good music can break through any time and space barriers. (Well maybe bad music does that too, but I'd rather not dwell on that.) Really sorry to find Phoebe's gone so soon, but delighted to hear her unique sound again. When I attended the Joni Tribute at Carnegie Hall in February of 2006, I was lucky enough to also attend the special meet and greet, and although she didn't perform, I was thrilled to be able to meet and talk briefly with Phoebe, who was there for the show. She was extraordinarily kind, and took the time to sign an autograph and pose for a photo with me, which now proudly hangs from a wall in my home office. Meeting her was definitely a highlight of that trip for me. I mentioned to her how much I loved her song, "Easy Street" which I believe originally appeared as a "B" side of one of her singles, and she told me that it was actually a demo recording that was almost not released at all. If you haven't heard it, here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYnMj29WuGY Truly another terrible loss. Best regards, Gary Z. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 11:51:49 +0000 (GMT) From: Anne Sandstrom Subject: Re: Re: carole king song predictions for tonight - njc Well, I only got one song prediction right. But as soon as I remembered that was a Carole King song, I KNEW Casey would do it. And I didn't like it. Jacob - first, was he auditioning for What Not to Wear because he knows his time's up on AI? second, was Randy also auditioning for WNTW? third, the 'singing' now reminds me of a little kid about to break into a tantrum Lauren - actually stretched her range a bit, so good for her - and she is quite young Scotty - some of You've Got a Friend was pretty convincing, especially the beginning. a bit uneven throughout, but a decent effort James - honestly, everyone else should just pack their bags and go home. James is true to himself, but inventive at the same time. I really enjoyed his performance of a song I would never have picked for him Casey - saw this one coming from 100 miles away and cringed throughout Hailey - not awful, not terribly memorable, will be enough to keep her in it for now final duet - so awful, and yet I think James and Jacob were laughing at their pairing throughout, so good on them for having a sense of humor about it - talk about two voices that don't go together! most embarassing moment of the night - when they spun Jennifer around and she was ah disassembled... So, my predictions for bottom 3: Jacob (who goes) Casey Lauren (which would be too bac, because she finally took more risks last night) lots of love, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 07:23:13 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: NJC and then there were 6 NJC NJC continued Well, my Fluor account is so crappy - it kept cutting out so I switched it off. So...where did i leave off...Scotty & Lauren - they were OK, Lauren much better than Scotty who panics when he gets off the melodic line. George & Tammy they ain't. Scotty's schtick just doesn't work here. Casey - Hi De Ho: Well, Anne called it. And what a fun song to sing, a great pick for him. But he did a TERRIBLE job. This song is supposed to be SUNG, he just shouted in a monotone. Plus 2 grunts. Maybe OK for Nirvana, but not for Carole King. D Haley - Beautiful: OK, not my fave CK song, and actually has some tricky intervals. I think she took it a little too much over the top but had some nice moments. Plus, short hemline. C- for the song, A- for the dress. Jacob - Oh No Not My Baby: Well, he must have heard me because he added a dash of funk, but all of a sudden his pitch is all over the place. Sang whole phrases way sharp. Could have killed but didn't quite bring the jamz. D+ James Durbin - Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow: Ahh, finally, a truly WONDERFUL performance. Pitch perfect, made it his own with the soft acapella start, and just really showed the others how its done. Here's your winner folks. Well, he's the best - depending on how America votes. A Lauren Alaina - Where You Lead: Rule 1, make sure you don't get shown up by your background singers, which is precisely what happened. I found myself listening to the back up. But she didn't make any major missteps, just sort of lackluster. Maybe not enough to move on. C+ Scotty McCreery - You've Got A Friend: One of her most well-known and of course one that JT made his own way back when. Hey, I think he did a great job with it - - a bit dull at first but got into it, took some small risks and sang it very sincerely. B+ So there's my take on this week. Not as bad as sourpuss Mack made it out to be, that's for sure. Won the night: James, no contest Lost: Jacob with Casey nipping at his heels Should go: Jacob Bottom 3: Haley, Jacob, Casey Bob ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 12:50:22 -0600 (MDT) From: TheStaff@JoniMitchell.com Subject: New Library item: One play, six different versions of Joni Mitchell Title: One play, six different versions of Joni Mitchell Publication: Toronto Globe and Mail Date: 2011.4.27 http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=2365 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 15:46:40 -0400 From: william burnworth Subject: lisa hannigan covers joni's "willy" http://www.wearsthetrousers.com/2011/04/watch-lisa-hannigan-covers-joni-mitchell/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+wearsthetrousers+%28wears+the+trousers%29 not a sentence I'd imagine writing ;) happy Jazzfest everybody love, William(smiling wistfully from Miami) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Apr 2011 22:06:35 +0100 (BST) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: Re: lisa hannigan covers joni's "willy" You win the caption competition of the month, William! But thanks for the clip, it's lovely indeed. I know Lisa Hannigan from a tribute night to Nick Drake in London's Barbican hall, one or two years ago. She was one of the highlights then, too.
