I saw Emmylou at the Winnipeg Folk Festival a few years back and enjoyed her performance very much. She did a few songs with Daniel Lanois, which was magical. cheers, Mags ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2011 10:19:09 -0700 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: NJC: Emmylou's new album Thank you so much for this, Richard. This is a must own. More Emmylou originals and a couple of nice covers. And her tribute to Kate McGarrigle is a real tear inducer. Nice production, too. I checked w/my aforementioned computer-safety-expert friend, and he confirmed that yes, he still uses JavaRa. Below is an explanation (probably "more than you want to know") of the whole deal. The reason that industry folks (including MANY who used to work for Microsoft and some of the other big companies) have developed and provide these programs for free is because it benefits everyone to stop the spread of viruses. So it's just sort of like an immunization program, except, of course, it's not govt.-run and mandatory. ;-) Here's a place to download it: http://sourceforge.net/projects/javara/ The ONLY thing I would caution about downloading freeware (such as EasyCleaner, which someone else mentioned also), is that with SOME of it, you just have to make sure it ISN'T installing anything extra--unrelated to its function--that you don't want. This only happened to me once, when I just skimmed over the installation page and failed to see that it wanted to install the Yahoo! toolbar. I have only encountered this sort of "add-on" once, so please don't let that keep you from trying something that has been recommended. I agree with Anne about Adobe products being secure--and since I was finally able to upgrade my system, I don't have the same problems that I used to w/Adobe Flash Player freezing up on me. But instead of Adobe Reader for PDFs, I use FoxIt, which is a smaller, and for me, easier to use program. (And free!) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Java software in general and the Java JRE in particular allow you to run applications called 'applets' that are written in the Java programming language. You probably have Java JRE installed on your computer because these applets allow you to play online games, chat with people around the world, calculate your mortgage interest, view images in 3D, as well as many others. > > As with all software, the JRE is updated on a regular basis. I've not heard all his stuff but have listened to quite a bit. I think of him in the same group as Thelonius Monk in terms of compositional structure, but if that's way offbase, somebody correct me. I'm sure glad Joni got to work with him - one less regret in her life and she made some truly incredible music. Just a few weeks ago I posted about listening to k d singing 'Hallelujah' on 'Recollections', taking off the headphones when it was done and telling Travis that the AI people should listen to *that* if they wanted to hear somebody *sing*. lol! Travis is an AI fan so I often hear it and see parts of it when I'm at the computer and he has it on the TV in here. I used to think all the singers sounded alike. They all seemed to be more concerned with showing off their vocal prowess than really communicating the songs. Melisma all over the place, going for the high notes, putting all the power into it that their voices could generate. It all sounded so calculated and artificial. (Wasn't there a movie titled 'AI', the initials standing for Artificial Intelligence?) Very little honest emotion. I would have said the same thing k d said about Joni or Dylan or even someone like Billie Holiday not having a chance to even get past the first round of auditions. They wouldn't fit the mold. This year has been a little different, however. I have been able to hear some diversity in the voices and styles and I have paid a little more attention. Paul, for instance (who I also found annoying) is an example, imo, of a different kind of singer than what the AI norm has been. More of the Dylan or Rod Stewart type of singer. Not a pretty voice and boy did he hit a lot of flat or wrong notes (to my ears anyway). And he and Donald Trump should fire whoever does their hair. But he is expressive in his way I suppose. But then it seems I have heard a lot of badly pitched performances from all of the singers this season. I guess the point is to find someone who can be developed and polished. I do find it interesting that Jennifer Hudson didn't win when she was a contestant. Maybe Scotty's performances were mostly interchangeable but I must admit, I have enjoyed that deep voice crooning those country tunes. Reminds me of early Randy Travis. And I thought he did a pretty good job of cutting loose at least a bit on the Elvis Presley song he did. James sure knows how to stir up the crowd. He generates a lot of genuine excitement. I think he has the best shot of going all the way. To tell the truth, the female singers have not made enough impression on me to form much of an opinion about them. And I am almost always more drawn to female singers than males. Casey is about the most interesting performer I think I have seen on AI. While I can't say that I like what he did with 'Nature Boy' I do admire the guts it took to do it. I do like that song. But Nat King Cole's delicate treatment of it will forever be the one I hear in my head. I was also bothered by his smiling through 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain'. Maybe he's too young to know about the historical context that produced the song. Interesting to hear the judges telling him he's an artist and encouraging him to stay true to himself. Frankly, however, I find this a little hard to swallow coming from J-Lo. And I'm sick of hearing that she's 'the most beautiful woman in the world'! It will be interesting to see if they do try to do something to change the alleged influx of votes cast by teenage girls in favor of the pretty teen-idol type boys . However, since Stefano just got voted off and he seems to fit the teen idol mold more than any of the other guys that are left the voters may be more diverse than people think. I guess I'm not quite as much of a snob about AI as I used to be. But I am skeptical about there being any radical change or influx of 'real artists' in upcoming seasons. It will be interesting to see what they do with Carole King's songs. I wonder if the Brill Building collaborations with Gerry Goffin will dominate the song selections or if the 'Tapestry' Carole King will be more prominent? We've already had one rendition of 'Natural Woman'. So who knows? I guess we'll find out. But I don't think I want to see an American Idol Joni Mitchell night. Sounds like a train wreck waiting to happen to me. Mark in Seattle - -----Original Message----- KD Lang has just been on out TV on a chat show (Graham Norton) along with Jennifer Hudson. They were talking about AI and KD was somewhat disparaging. What she said was along the lines that 'People like Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan would have no chance' and said she would not consider her songs being used by the programme. So a Joni mention in relation to American Idol.
