Seemed like that anyway. And I was DELIGHTED to see that the web posts these vids on Thursday morning! Casey - "Nature Boy": I have to say that while I thoroughly welcome the intro of the jazzy stuff to this parade of predictable pop fluff, this was not his best show. I don't care for his grunts and some of his notes didn't settle on my ear very well, not that they were blue/jazz notes, they just sounded wrong. Loved his scat and his bass solo though. Haley Reinhart - "Call Me": Let's see...short dress matched with hip boots, and just hearing her say 'call me'...yep, I'm on board. She actually did stumble a couple times and had to ladder down from the high note at the end, but she sold it with her energy and didn't overdo the growl. Jacob Lusk - "Bridge Over Troubled Water": OK, so I've been a little tough on Jacob, but this one floored me - darn near moved me to tears in fact. A near-perfect song taken to church by a pure gospel voice and sung to perfection. None of the over-the-top stuff, just the right tweaks of soul, and he seemed in control the whole time. I loved it. James Durbin - "Heavy Metal": Man oh man! James doesn't seem like he's auditioning or competing for ANYTHING, he walks out and goes right into full performance mode. This was another superb match of voice and song, right in his wheelhouse. And like Casey, it's nice to hear something besides pop fluff and syrupy sappy ballads. If there's enough rock and roll voters, he could win this thing. Lauren Alaina - "The Climb": Another fine performance by the other lady still standing. Don't care for the song but her performance of it was wonderful; note-perfect and delivered with conviction. It's saying something that I really enjoyed a performance of a song I don't think much of. Certainly makes more sense taking on a Miley Cyrus song as opposed to Aretha Franklin! Paul McDonald - "Old Time Rock & Roll": How much worse can he get? How much more of this torture must we endure? Wearing a suit that even a homeless person would discard, Paul picks one of the most cliched tired songs, sings it awfully, throws in every corny cliche out there (clap hands, his spastic dancing, "C'mon", etc). Please please please America, vote him OFF. Now. Scotty McCreery - "I Cross My Heart": Again, another song right in the singer's breadbasket. He's probably sung this one a thousand times. It's obvious by now that he's not going to stray from his country schtick, he even rednecked his voice up a bit to my ears. I don't like this style, but America as a general rule does and he performs with as much confidence as James. So does America like metal or country better? Stefano Langone - "End Of The Road": Have to laugh at the title as he thought he was a goner last week. Give him credit for being a bit gutsy in the song title selection department. Anyway, he nailed this Boyz II Men Pop/R&B nugget, feeling revitalized, perhaps? Unfortunately, in heavy field of guys, he's probably not delivering enough juice to go further. So, Top 8 performances are history. Who should go: Paul, Paul & Paul Who Will go: Casey or Stefano Bob in Beijing, Over & Out ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Apr 2011 06:50:38 EDT From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: NJC American Idol - Movie Night & James RULES NJC Jian-heng Muller writes: > Who should go: Paul, Paul &Paul > Who Will go: Casey or Stefano > > Oh I hope Paul goes. I'm tired of his vocals, sick of his white teeth, and the Holiday Inn lounge down the street is looking for someone to sing on Tuesday nights. I do think Stefano will be in the bottome three again, even though he did a better job last night. As for James, he's still my favorite. I can actually say I voted 3 times for him last night. If you don't vote, you can't complain :-) Jimmy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Apr 2011 04:12:44 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: NJC American Idol - Movie Night & James RULES NJC I agree with both of you. Paul has to go, but he probably won't tonight. That suit was ridiculous. It might have matched a country song (although it would look bad on Scotty), but it didn't match what he sang last night. I liked his rehearsal version better, maybe because we only saw about ten seconds of it. And I don't think I should have to wear sunglasses while watching to shield me from the blazing glory of his teeth. I'm sure he has more than the usual number, but the glare makes it impossible to count. I think Stefano was greatly improved last night and he impressed me for the first time, but he won't be around much longer, Haley still irritates me but not quite as much as she used to. She was off-key a lot last night but I think she should stick to the loud stuff. Even though Casey has been one of my favourites, his weird grinning and grunting at strange moments are too distracting. And somehow, I doubt America will get what he did last night. I really enjoyed James' performance last night. Muller, I always wondered if we had any Joni fans in China, but I never figured it would be you! - ----- Original Message ---- > From: "FMYFL@aol.com" > To: scjoniguy@yahoo.com; joni@smoe.org > Cc: bartcop@bartcop.com > Sent: Thu, April 14, 2011 6:50:38 AM > Subject: Re: NJC American Idol - Movie Night & James RULES NJC > > Jian-heng Muller writes: > > > Who should go: Paul, Paul &Paul > > Who Will go: Casey or Stefano > > > > > > Oh I hope Paul goes. The closest I've had is streaming RadioParadise at work (yay, I can stream audio here!) and they play a Joni tune every so often. They played "California" today and followed it with Led Zeppelin's "Going to California". Kind of a Joni double shot. I loved that he stood his ground, stood up to Jimmy and William and did what was true for HIM. I've always had a soft spot for him, and am glad that he's still on board. Paul..pullease...go away! He's always irritated the heck outta me and those teeth....that's just not natural, ya know? As well, I don't like the suits, man. For all of you Casey fans, Ive never liked him either; he's got some weird energy in those eyes...like something is going to jump from out of the shadows at any given moment. I also liked Lauren's song; felt she did a great job .. sometimes it is good to remember that she is as young as she is. She's got this sweetness about her, and good energy to boot. Jimmy, I'm glad you voted for James, thrice! I concur with everyone else: Paul must go. Pretty please? I hate the song "Nature Boy." For a singer, Casey is a damn good bass player. I'm over Stefano (who did a great job last night, however), way over Scotty (because I actually like country music, which ain't what he sings and also because I can't stand to look at him;thank God they talked him out of the Fred Neil number), never ever cared for wither Haley or Lauren: sorry J.Lo, neither "girl" is gonna make it. > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Mags > Sent: Thursday, April 14, 2011 9:25 AM > To: JMDL; Bob Muller > Subject: Re: NJC American Idol - Movie Night & James RULES NJC > > ohhh sweet baby James!!! hellya! my inner rock star/metal head was more > than pleased.
