Seemed like an off night, despite S Tyler saying it was the best night since the Beatles show, which I didn't like much either. Juanita (is that her name?) sang prettily, and was my pick of the night. Casey doing "Smells Like Teen Spirit" didn't really make it for me, though his electric bass playing was stellar. They had to pick songs from their birth year, when so much of popular music really sucked, aka the 80's. Certainly our dear Joni's entire career has demonstrated that. There is much pain, as well as fun. Some of her fans claim that once Car Wheels came out, they gave up on her. Others, like me, only discovered her when Car Wheels came out. But then I went and got all her previous stuff and I like both. I am enjoying the new one very much and agree that it's her best in a long time. As far as AI (coincidence that it has the same acronym as artificial intelligence?), it doesn't bother me if people who have just been given the boot say they had fun. Yeah, I guess it is their job to make the audience have fun, but if they have fun too, it's better. I'm just not sure it's all that sincere. Maybe they're coached to say things like that so as not to sound like poor losers. What I hate most of all is when they beg to be given another chance. What an absolutely incredible amazing piece of music. I had to start it up again after the first 30 seconds to hear that piano intro again. And do you know what's just as genius as the chord progression? THE SPACES OF DEAD AIR BETWEEN THEM. I mean, give that first 30 seconds a listen. Go ahead, I can wait. It almost plays like a mini-instrumental story in itself. That first 30 seconds, those 'chords of inquiry' that suggest, question, and then resolve - and then the REAL magic starts. But that first 30 seconds...most artists can't craft anything in their ENTIRE CAREERS that can rival it. And how cool that I have a group of friends that GET THAT.
