Joni may have beat him to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (with whatever worth you attach to that honor) but Tom has definitely continue to grow and prosper while Joni has fizzled. Not to say that Joni can't rest on her body of work - she can. But Waits has certainly been more relevant to me in the last 10-15 years than she has. And he has none of the sour attitude while having a career arc that has been pretty similar to Joni's. Maybe the fact that he's been in a satisfying and successful personal artistic relationship has made the difference. Don't know. For my fellow Waits enthusiasts, here's a link to what he said at his induction, as well as the setlist for his performance: http://tinyurl.com/6gxfwqd And...he's working on an album of new songs! It's about time Tom Waits got recognized. I love this: "Songs are really just interesting things to do with the air." Reading what he had to say reminded me of just how damn funny Tom Waits is. Link please?? And in any case: What's your point? If Ms. Mitchell is, indeed, "so angry and bitter" now, does that diminish anyone's enjoyment of her entire life's work? Should it? (I'm ASKING, not attacking). This keeps coming up--I had started to respond last night to the Joni/Neil quote (also originally posted utterly out of context), but I was just too tired. I mean, what is this seeming obsession with wanting Joni to be "nice" and uncontroversial? Why is it "unattractive" if she expresses an opinion as fact? (Men do it all the time). There is a LOT to be angry and bitter about in this world, and sometimes it's the artist's job to point it out and express outrage. Joni is praised for being so prescient--"Big Yellow Taxi," for instance--and she has every right to be proclaiming "I told you so!" (tho she isn't). It ain't easy being a visionary, esp. in this short-term-thinking, greed obsessed society, and if Ms. Mitchell no longer suffers fools graciously, I don't blame her. And thank god she doesn't. Isn't it REFRESHING to hear some different viewpoints, some actual "intellectual"--for lack of a better term--discussion? I hope she continues to speak her formidably informed mind and that one day, some will no longer be threatened or otherwise disturbed by it. I also think she's just about the most misunderstood person on the planet. I find her FASCINATING and inspiring and thrilling. In any interview with her that I've seen or heard, despite the bitter-sounding comments she sometimes makes, she always sounds in very good humour. Once it's translated to print, it comes across as crotchety, and let me tell you, I don't mind crotchety, although I do mind the same old topics coming up all the time - except that often the interviewer is the one who starts it.
