I briefly met you at one of the NE Jonifests, and was in awe of listening to you sing and play Joni's music. Now that we have spent the past couple of years together, I realize that not only are you so knowledgeable about Joni and her music, but you're a fun beautiful woman to hang around with and I love you so much. Directed by Kay Matschullat, performances begin Wednesday, April 20th at the Rattlestick Playwrights Theater (224 Waverly Place off Seventh Avenue South between W. 11th & Perry Streets). The official opening night is set for Thursday, May 5th. The production is scheduled to run through Sunday, June 4th. While explaining herself, McCullers wrestles with the demons that have intruded on her from the beginning of her life. A compelling hybrid of music and theater, Carson McCullers Talks About Love is a musical portrait of one of the most important figures in American literature. The creative team includes Louisa Thompson (scenic design), Jessica Pabst (costume design), Lenore Doxsee (lighting design), and Nick Kourtides (sound design). Bios____________________________________________________________ In 1985, singer/songwriter Suzanne Vega released her stunning self-titled debut album. 25 years and 7 million albums sold later, Suzanne is widely regarded as one of the most brilliant songwriters of her generation. Luka, released in 1987, was one of the earliest songs to address the subjects of child abuse and domestic violence, and is considered a classic by music critics. Vega was the first artist on the main stage at the very first Lilith Fair. Her voice and song Toms Diner was used in the refinement of the MP3, earning her the nickname The Mother of the MP3. She recorded Toms Diner a cappella but it has since been remixed upwards of 50 times. She was also the first major label artist to perform a concert on Second Life in the form of an avatar. Suzanne Vega is an artist that continues to surprise. A pioneer among singer-songwriters, she has embarked on a project to re-imagine her own songbook in a stripped down and intimate manner, a new four-album thematic album series entitled Suzanne Vega: Close Up. The first installment, Vol. 1 Love Songs was released in March 2010, followed by Vol. 2 People & Places in October 2010. Vol. 3 States of Being will be released in May 2011. Carson McCullers (19171967) is known for her novels, short stories, plays, numerous essays and poetry, which explores the spiritual isolation of outcasts in the South and is often written in the Southern Gothic style; many of her characters deal with loneliness. Her novels include The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940), which was named # 17 of the 100 Greatest Novels of the 20th Century by Random House Modern Library, Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941), which brazenly tackled the subject of repressed homosexuality, The Member of the Wedding (1946), The Ballad of the Sad Cafi (1951), an exploration of loneliness and unrequited love and Clock Without Hands (1961). Her play, The Square Root of Wonderful (1957), deals in part with the traumatic experience of her husbands suicide. Well known in numerous artistic circles, McCullers many colleagues included W. H. Auden, Benjamin Britten, Gypsy Rose Lee, Paul and Jane Bowles, Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams. In addition, McCullers was an alumna of Yaddo in Saratoga Springs. and roll is.....i have a vague notion of it....too much of jonibs music is too just damn interesting and yet lacks the lyricism or whatever, to carry one away. itbs her mindbs thoughts that are so evocative cause her thinking is so straight from the heart....and her incredible innovation on the guitar (woman guitarists like joan armatrading, janis ian and joni seem so vastly under-commented on....referring to their genius at innovation...instead stairways to heaven and all other brief moments of genius by male guitarists gets applauded and inscribed on the religiouss tablets when therebs really nothing of note there).....(talking of jonibs appeal) and her look that has gotten her into attention....we all know she has a passionate mental life.itbs so strange strange strange to me that her songs that carry me away....and ibve mentioned a few times the power of her shadows and light concert...that utter evocative and flowing powerful music...and like bthis flight tonightb (that turns like that yet possibly not as compelling....itbs like b a strange boyb doesnbt exist!!!itbs not even to be found, in just music from an album, on youtube......the songs and performances that carry me away donbt have a place!!!...woodstock in the way joni does it on shadows and light and other songs there send chills up my spine and the sheer passion in the timing and the instrumentation is vastly under-commented on...i can see why she loves rachmaninov and stevie wonder. she could learn from janisb lyricism...her music in general doesnbt have as much as janis...and yet janis leaves me so so cold in her commenst about being haunted by crazy people, as though shebs never paused to consider that theybre not always crazy and at times might feel so exposed and obliterated by her exposure of them...at least ibve never heard joni making public utterances of delegating madmen to oblivion....yes, joni too has compromised....no matter what she says, her girlie voice of long ago seems to be to have been conformism (which is so forgiveable when you havenbt seen an alternative like we have since the 80bs, of strong sexy womenbs voices) but she missed out on some individuality there which she puts down to being a mimick...ya, i do understand that. and then i also want to say, that ibve been thinking and thinking and realising that jonibs expressions and thoughts on nature vs science has more wisdom than mine has....i see her point more and more and the physicists that are so desperately trying to prove that the universe didnbt need anything to come into being, who want to substitute their matematics for whatever-it-was...they should perhaps rather try and prove that it does not exists, and see if they can therby make it (the universe) disappear...then webll all know how virile they are. so much of what has happened, including this terrible skin disease, might stem exactly from the technology that has been applied without the concern for long-term consequences....but isnbt the motivation here, isnbt it blind enterprise,...rather than blind science...isnbt it the profit motive at least as much, but i think more, than blind science....who said the discoverer of anything ever said it would uterly harmless-...that would be so unscientific an assumption to make...not that i think capitalsim is eveil...i tiink socialism is far more evil given that it ignores how evil individuals are....but nowadays i can see so clearly that capitalsim is designed to benefit off other people , and off the planet...and try to corner it all for onesself.....the fact that it is a fair offer of merchandise has benefitted..it is just so hugely karmically hilariouss that evrything, apart from food- as a reult of too many huge steaks being ordered) is actually getting to be cheaper...not because of the enter-pri-sers-but becasue of the inbuilt (as it stands) scientific principles. so i vote for jonibs wisdom...i think about you joni, and i just want to say if i ever did walk on the beach with you, wi wouldnbt ask you about what dreams fly with the seagulls....not explicitly...it could just dawn on me that we some similar wishes....but every-one should hopefully manifest their dreams in-time...if there is /was even enough of it....i think here will be. and then about japan...it seems so strange that these hardworking people, with their courage, and there seems to be incredible appreciation of the arts there, should be living on this small havoc-condemed pice of land. it is unreasonable to expect them to carry on rying to make an existence over there. i think we should invite them to come, all 127 million of tem , into africa.....i know african people might take exeption to this...but somewhere...why doesnbt america invite them all there...i think arica has the most to gain from hem coming here...there.. enough space here...the weather is good, no major calamities (this continent is blessed in all ways apart from the over-glamorization of individuals and under-appreciation of principles).....the most horrible thing that doesnbt emantate from the people is drought......therebs almost nothing to worry about except for being murdered or raped or robbed, for fun or glory....it is absurd that these people should be left on that catastrophe-doomed strip of land. i love joni for saying what she wants, on impulse i love neil young for his rock-straight-beat, and his voice, and his lyrics, but the beat is too straight in the end, and lacks the stregth to carry one away.i think the whole world is far too straight and thatbs a major problem. i think joni has also made wrong investmenst but i am sure she can see this by now...anyway, she is not me so she will have her own self-chosen guiding princiiples, but she can forget about me not seeing through her viscious condemnation of non-men-centered woman....i would have been offended by her, after luring sam shepard away from me, commedning me on how ibm handling it....i would think shebs being condescending and that she thinks shebs the victor for having landed up with having a man, the trophy of trophies.and it is really weird hat she is outspoken about the ravages of war and then complains that the men are too weak to send to war, and that one will have to sedn the woman..to what war is this...what war ???? and nevertheless i love her cause i think shebs long ago figured that out.....and shebs not there at all anymore...shebs somewhere with the seagulls...i love her spirit, i learn from her wisdom as it seems she has more in those areas of yellow taxi.....and i love her for bringing thses inetersting jmdl people into my life..but i would fight with her, cat and dog, because if she rejects so much of what is important to me,...if she still doesn, it would make me angry being with her. i do still maintain that shine is beautiful ...that warmth there is so wonderful to hear. now thatbs all. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2011 #79
