Unlike others, maybe as a Brit, I do really miss Simon Cowell. The sychophantic rantings of all three judges seem most unhelpful to the contestants- and it's only show one. Tyler and Lopez's 'You know I'm a fan of yours' is such a cop out. They seem to use that when a performance is one they really feel to be average. I often found Cowell saying what I really thought about the performances, although he wasn't very kind about the way he delivered it. I often found him witty. The guys this year seem to be much more individual and memorable than the girls. It was some weeks ago right here that I tipped on JMDL the unbelievably talented 19 year old Casey Abrams, after his brilliant audition. And he must be the one for us to back here on JMDL. Not only because he's an amazing singer, but a fabulous musician too. The icing of the cake is, of course, is that he's from Idyllwild, the home of the 2010 Joni Fest and hanging out place of Dave and Robin. Dave has said that he doesn't know Casey, but was going to check out with his keyboard player, Barnaby, to see if he knew him. Casey must have picked up his jazzy style from someone and somewhere really cool. I expect he was hanging out round the back when 'Safaris of the Heart' was being recorded. But did they say Casey's gone to hospital in the results show? Anyway, Casey to WIN!!! At first I thought he was just plain mean (and sometimes he was) but he was honest and funny and, most of the time, I agreed with him. It also seems that, every time Steve Tyler comments in a slightly negative way, Jennifer Lopez agrees with him. Randy does sometimes differ and comes close to Simon's honesty, but sometimes I think he gives a different opinion just to keep things from getting too boring. I found it disturbing, if not all that surprising, that J Lo had never heard of Ryan Adams. At least Tyler and Randy seem to know and appreciate a lot of different styles of music, but I didn't like Paul's version of that Ryan Adams song - so forgettable that I had to strain to remember who did it. They did say Casey was in the hospital and I understand he has some kind of ongoing stomach problem, which could mean a lot of different things. I think he's my favourite too: he's talented and has a great personality on top of it all. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: Anita G > To: jonipeople LIST > Cc: Bob Muller > Sent: Sun, March 13, 2011 5:09:23 AM > Subject: NJC NJC American Idol - And Then there were 12 NJC NJC > > > Unlike others, maybe as a Brit, I do really miss Simon Cowell. I suppose that many other lists have long time friends who get to natter about all things other than the apparent focus of their list. Joni's not doing a whole lot these days (well, Im sure she is but it's not like in 2000 when the BSN tour was making her way across the land). I suppose it might be a challenge for anyone who is new to the list, to imagine that we are all in the inner circle ;-) and that the list is only focused on those who became friends at the inception of the list, and have carried forward, deepening that friendship all the way through our time together. But still. You catch a lot more bees with honey, so perhaps if someone has an issue with walking in the room full of strangers who seem to be only interested in American Idol, well, all you had to do was say so in a much kinder manner. Robban's right, delete the things you do not wish to read. We are a great bunch and happen to share a lot more depth than that of an american reality show. I have learned miles of information about Joni herself, have been a loyal JOni fan since 74 and yet, I had heard only the tip of the iceburg in terms of her entire catalogue and what she brings to the world. This is the place. Not only that, I have made the most wonderful friends all over the globe. I know that in a moment's notice, I'd be welcomed into their homes and heart if I announced I was going to be in town, wherever that town may be. Another wonderful aspect to this list is the musical talent that sifts through so many posts. As well, I have learned about other artists, who may have been directly influenced by Joni. Or they relate to her, or there's just so much out there, in one's local scene, that this is the place where those little jewels are shared. They get groups (digests) made up of strings of posts. A lot of the AI posts were rather lengthy (not that I have any room to talk about lengthy posts) and would have necessitated a lot of scrolling as opposed to deleting. I suppose if you're looking for Joni only commentary and don't know about the choice of the OnlyJoni digest, it could get frustrating trying to scroll and sift through everything just to get to the Joni related content. That being said, I think it is a good idea to try remember to trim the post you may be responding to down to the parts that are relevant to your response. I know I've gotten a bit lazy about that. But I'm sure the digest people appreciate not having to scroll through a whole string of related posts repeatedly just to read the latest response. And don't forget those njc tags, folks! Of course courtesy and a good attitude always tend to generate courteous, helpful responses. Heart and humor and humility will lighten up your heavy load. Rudeness and bad attitudes tend to go over like a lead balloon, lead balloon, lead, lead, lead, lead balloon...le-ead baloo-oon...... That should clear it up for all. Myself, I don't mind friends discussing AI but I usually don't bother reading further. And actually, there is another method which works well. One really does not have to READ every email that comes into one's inbox. With a simply press of the DELETE button, such missives disappear at the speed of light. Out of sight - out of mind. But then again, maybe there was something contextual that makes it make sense. I hear it, in my mind, as Joni laughing and tossing that off as she takes another drag from her cigarette. She may have meant it as a backhanded compliment for that matter. I don't think Joan has a lot of self-censorship when it comes to making comments about anything and everything. That's part of what makes her endearing, because she's honest and open, but it can also come across as mean-spirited and curmudgeonly, not that there's anything wrong with curmudgeonly ;-) It would be nice to hear Joni weigh in on the new political activism, but I wonder if she's too far removed from the reality of the average working person (or not-working-but-not-by-choice, as so often is the case.) - ----- Original Message ---- > From: ava rosenblum > To: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Sun, March 13, 2011 3:38:12 AM > Subject: Joni on Neil > > Makes me feel a little bit bad for Neil because he seemed so enamored with >Joni, But I guess we should take all quotes with a grain of salt since we (I) >have no idea about their personal relationship or the context of the quote. > On a slightly different note, I am hoping that the recent political activism >in the US inspires some new composing for Joni. :) > > best, > > ava > > > > ------------------------------ > > > > Date: Sun, 13 Mar 2011 00:13:14 -0500 > > From: "Richard Flynn" > > Subject: Re: Joni on Neil > > > > You know this is so unattractive for Joni to be badmouthing her peers. > > > > Sent via DROID on Verizon Wireless > > > > - -----Original message----- > > From: LC Stanley > > To: JMDL > > Sent: Sun, Mar 13, 2011 03:48:21 GMT+00:00 > > Subject: Joni on Neil > > > > "You know, Neil Young is singing Rock n' roll will never die, and Neil never > > rocked and rolled in his life. The thing about Joni is she has always continued to grow and expand her musical pallet. And her early influences go so far beyond the influences of most singer/songwriters of her era (see, I can't really even say that without mentioning that that "era" - late 60's early 70's - is where most of her peers, but not Joni, remained). Joni's informal musical upbringing included jazz and swing. To say Neil doesn't "swing" is simply saying that he, like so many others, didn't (doesn't) really get it when it comes to jazz, swing, and improvisation. I think it is really cool that she equates "roll" in "rock and roll" with swing. Neil is a rocker, he is not a swinger. Is that a bad thing? I liked Neil back in the '70's. But my musical tastes evolved, and Joni kept growing musically. Neil? Not so much. ~dan On Sat, Mar 12, 2011 at 9:36 PM, LC Stanley wrote: > "You know, Neil Young is singing Rock n' roll will never die, and Neil > never > rocked and rolled in his life. What in hells was I thinking? Hi Eric, Your frustration is understandable, if somewhat misinformed. Les Irvin has kindly already taken care of the matter for you -- by switching your subscription from "everything" to "Joni only" posts. (For anyone who doesn't understand how that works, the addition of the "NJC" tag to the subject of any post will cause it to filter OUT of the "Joni only" posts and digests.) This list has been around for 15 years, and over those years we have had MANY discussions (and arguments) about what discussions belong here or not. We long ago settled on the idea that it ALL belongs here, that pretty much any topic is welcome for inclusion and discussion, as long as people are polite or at least not personally vindictive. It's the responsibility of any newcomer -- to ANY email discussion list -- to learn, first, about the subcriptions options available (if any, and the JMDL has at least four), and decide what's best for them. Second, it's important to get to know the contributors to the list and hopefully understand that, for many of them, the list is a familiar place for them and (particularly in the case of the JMDL) there are long-time friendships that have developed. Third, please understand that in a case of a list that has successfully existed for a long time, many things have already been discussed, over and over again. That said, any long-time list depends on the input of new subscribers to share their stories and opinions and questions. So, please: share YOUR stories (Joni or other) and YOUR opinions, and ask YOUR questions. Hope you'll stick around, and add some new spice here.
