True, he is talented, however his queeniness (as a lesbian, I say that with affection) IS distracting to watch. I would rather just hear him. Lori Santa Rosa, CA ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 11:19:06 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: NJC NJC American Idol - And Then there were 12 NJC NJC It should come as no major surprise that I agree with you for the most part. To begin with, the guys are definitely better than the girls, at least so far. I find Haley Reinhart annoying. i know Steve Tyler likes her growl, but I find it forced and, like melisma, I believe growling should be kept to a minimum in order to have any meaning. Having said that, i think she did a pretty good job on the yodelling, immediately thought of Patsy Cline before Steve (or was it Randy?) mentioned that it was a sung that she had either never released or didn't get around to recording. I find Paul McDonald entertaining, but didn't like his song last night - boring! Nice teeth though! He may be a one-trick pony. Lauren - I like that girl. She reminds me of someone but darned if I can figure out who. I'm not talking about anyone famous here. Maybe she reminds me of one of my nieces, but I'm still not sure. Naima - once again, I like her. She has a very interesting look and I like her voice. I also agree with you that I'd prefer to hear her sing something jazzy. I don't care for that stupid "Umbrella" song and, while I'd prefer to hear Naima doing jazz, I think she did a really good job on that song, as a result of which, I don't hate it as much as I did before. Ashthon. I think she's gorgeous and has a nice voice, but agree with you that the Diana Ross song last night was pretty ho-hum. Karen Rodriguez. Yeah, she probably has a cold or something, but she doesn't do much for me anyway, so she could leave and I wouldn't care. Thia Megia. I love her name too and she's cute as a button with a very pretty voice. She may stick around a while, but she's probably too young and sweet to go all the way. Pia. I'd like to say she annoys me because I don't care for the songs she chooses. I'm not a fan of Celine Dion either, even if I recognize she has a hell of a voice. But so does Pia, and lots of people like that stuff, so don't let my tastes stand in her way. She could easily last and I can understand why. I like her with her glasses on, for some reason. I also remember that song before Celine did it and couldn't remember the name of the guy who did it first, so thanks for reminding me. I told Sarah that it wasn't a Celine original and she was shocked. So, Thia has never heard of the little tramp and thought her song was an MJ original, and my kid thought "all by myself" was a Celine original. Kids - ha! Stefano did a fine job on his Stevie Wonder song, which is hard to do and he gets extra points for taking on Stevie at all, much less doing a great job on it. Jacob Lusk. I love his voice, but I hated the way he sang that song, and agree with you that saying R Kelly is your idol NOT a good idea! James Durbin. Yes, I love this kid and hope he lasts a while. Casey Abrams. I love this kid too. I love his sense of humour and his goofy smile and his leprachaun looks. Oh, and he can sing too. Scotty. He seems like a sweet, kind kid and I can't believe that baritone comes from a 17-year-old. But, I would be very surprised if he could do anything outside that particular country niche he's in. However, whether he lasts much longer on AI or not, I think he will do very well, because country music is big music in the US of A, and country fans are loyal. He seems very genuine and has a good future. And I think the judges are too nice and keep wondering what Simon would say. It seems that maybe Randy is becoming the Simon, but then again, Randy isn't always nice. Yo, yo, dawg! What can I say? It was a little pitchy, a little pitchy, dude, but over all, I like it. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: "Bob.Muller@Fluor.com" > To: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Thu, March 10, 2011 9:12:18 AM > Subject: NJC NJC American Idol - And Then there were 12 NJC NJC ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2011 11:33:47 -0800 (PST) From: Mags Subject: willie nelson NJC Does anyone know how to contact Willie Nelson's people. I would have been FLOORED if it had been Joni's Blue. Paul McDonald (Come Pick Me Up): If you could vote AGAINST someone, I would have been punching in for 2 hours just to get this guy off my tv set. Lauren Alaina (Any Man Of Mine): She was ok. Not knocking my socks off. Naima Adedapo (Umbrella): She needs to take a deep breath and really spend time singing a song. Not my favorite. Wouldn't be sorry to see her go. Haley Reinhart (Blue): Cute. Can sing well. Maybe a bit too young yet. Ashthon Jones (When You Tell Me That You Love Me): Has the look and the attitude. Not the chops. Karen Rodriguez (I Could Fall In Love): Like her, but last night wasn't good. Thia Meghia (Smile): Nice, melodic tone to her voice. Not really a performer. Pia Toscano (All By Myself): One of the top 2. Stefano Langone (Lately): Always sounds like he's in pain and is giving birth to the song. Jacob Lusk (I Believe I Can Fly): Great voice. A lot of power. Needs to learn more about dynamic range. James Durbin (Maybe I'm Amazed): One of the top 2. My personal favorite. How can you be versatile and stay true to yourself? See this guy. Casey Abrams (With A Little Help From My Friends): A real musician and, I suspect, an old soul. Like him. Scotty McCreery (The River): Talented country singer. Should be in top 5. I think we watched the first 7 or 8 - we'll finish tonight before watching the results. I just skimmed Bob's post, because I didn't want it to be all given away, but I just had to laugh at everyone's take of the blondish bearded guy who smiles and whispers and rasps and jerks. I find him sooo annoying. It's like Kenny Loggins and Dana Carvey had a spastic child together. And his voice is like James Blunt and Al Stewart had a child together, and the one carrying him drank a bit during the pregnancy, you know what I mean? Ok, and the over the top guy - I can't remember his name - the R. Kelly one. I hate to say it, but he annoys the living F*** out of my entire family. Yes, he can sing and yada yada, but it's just a bunch of wailing to me, and too over the top, and I am sick of seeing him cry. I never thought I would say this, but I loved the Tourette's guy, or Asperer's guy, or whatever it is - I can't remember. He was great last night - he just needs to stop that high pitched squeal. Axl Rose is annoying for many reasons, and that squeal is one of them. Pia? Well, I said the same thing ("It's an Eric Carmen song!") but yeah, she's good. The Kelley Pickler girl? Starting to grate on me. Sorry. She has a great voice, but she needs to ditch the Lurlene Lumpkin act. The girl singing Blue? I want to really like her. I can only like her so much. I thought it was a shaky performance. Anyway, that's my 2 cents. In Bob's format because it's a great format: Paul McDonald (Come Pick Me Up): Should never have made the finals in the first place.... The red-headed scarecrow guy would have been far more interesting to watch. Lauren Alaina (Any Man Of Mine): As Bob said, she's a cute little thing and I think she may be one who grows into this competition as a variety of people get to put their stamp on her. She'll last at least 4 or 5 rounds. Naima Adedapo (Umbrella): I hate this song and don't like it any more for her performance. However, I am really glad the judges saved her and think she may find her niche while on the show. She needs quirky pieces but I'd love to see her take on India.Arie. Haley Reinhart (Blue): Average performance but she flirts with Mr. Tyler and he'll work with her to stay IMO. Not that she's awful, just not got the "star quality" Ashthon Jones (When You Tell Me That You Love Me): Utterly forgettable! Karen Rodriguez (I Could Fall In Love): One of Jennifer's favorites and the most memorable Hispanic performer of the last several seasons so she'll get that vote and stick around at least another week or so. Thia Meghia (Smile): Her life experience will get her kicked out, not her lack of singing talent. She doesn't have the history to put in the emotion necessary to pull off some of the big numbers. Pia Toscano (All By Myself): Nary a crack in the voice on those big notes. Not a contemporary singer but could go on to have a great Broadway career. I want to see her pull of something outside her comfort zone before I make a final decision on her but she was one of my top 3 of the night. Stefano Langone (Lately): Another one I was happy to see saved, I think he will do better when he learns it's OK to sing without too much superfluous embellishment. H has a great voice, I just wish he'd stick to the melody a bit more. Jacob Lusk (I Believe I Can Fly): I, like many others including the judges, think he has a gift from the heavens but he seems to think he has to go overboard on every performance (over the top I think someone said). Yes he's quite nelly but he could do it more tastefully and without what, to me, appears to be exaggerated humility. He'll stick around because if something is repeated enough (he's got an awesome gift) the masses will just vote for him regardless of his overdone drag queenly style. The voice quality is there, no doubt but I don't like his performance style. He'd make an excellent evangelical minister. James Durbin (Maybe I'm Amazed): I was so happy to see him tackle something a bit outside his perceived genre with this tune. His performance skills are excellent and he should go to the final four unless he totally f#@ks up. Another of my top 3 Casey Abrams (With A Little Help From My Friends): Casey, Casey, Casey... My favorite of the night. He is a musician of great talent and his sort of innocence (like when Jen called him sexy and he blushed profusely) is endearing. Loved he intensity of his performance. Scotty McCreery (The River): I am always taken aback at the voice that comes out of that body. His deep bass tones are lush and spot-on pitch, he definitely has a gift. I wish his parents had encouraged him to broaden his musical horizons beyond Garth Brooks and am waiting for his take on "Swing Low Sweet Chariot." My guess... Paul or Ashton tonight and no tears shed by me on either one. Amen to that. The constant fawning...I mean, everything can't be amazing all the time, but apparently it is. This group of kids is, maybe the best yet. Naima slayed me last week with her "Summertime".Perfect! The Rhianna song, not so much, but I think she has a certain something. Paul-never did like it. Nice textured voice I guess, but somehow he is not interesting and the Rod Stewart (and Ryan Adams) was far too obvious a choice. Thia wowed me last night-what a lovely, pure voice. James continues to be my main man, with a stunning instrument, shades of Adam Lambert. He should win. Jacob's voice is just as amazing-although I find his flamboyant style off-putting. Casey is very talented-his standup bass performance was just incredible. I did not get much out of his Joe Cocker. You can't fake being gin-soaked, so for me, Dawg, it was a little too squeaky clean. And...anybody who sings "All By Myself" should be disqualified for excessive cornyness. I have to say that I think they all picked the wrong songs. I thought Scotty seemed to be trying to be too country. I think it was the way he sang out of the corner of his mouth, like i do when I walk around the house in my underwear singing Kenny Chesney songs after a box of wine. Just kidding. Sorta. Anyway, and then is the Asian girl they were mean to, but I didn't mind her - but again, could you have picked a worse song? It was so genius to sing that song from Fame, which I forgot about, and then she does THAT? Oh, and one more, and i'll stop being cranky. The girl who sang Selena?? Mama Mia, it's like the talent portion of the Miss America pageant, you know what I mean? OH, I also have to mention Naoma - Naonka - Nee-Nee? I can't remember - Adedapo. Anyway, there is something about her that intrigues me. She just has to get some confidence. But sweet Jesus, WHY do they sing Rihanna? It just never works. Stop it ladies, please. Now, on to tonight's show - if you haven't seen it yet, I won't spoil it. I will say I hate how Ryan is doing the eliminations - you know, fooling them to think they are safe and then going "Psyche!" basically right after. I just want to yell awful things about how he gives dwarfs a bad name to his face when he does that. And holy moly, Jimmy Iovine is quite the scary man. He seems so intimidating. My beloved Stevie was involved with him for years, and while I am thankful that he guided Bella Donna and The Wild Heart, I too woulda turned into a raging coke addict having to live with him - I'd be afraid he'd yell at me 24/7. No wonder she hid behind all of those scarves - she was probably thinking "maybe he'll think I'm a coat rack and go home." Don't even get me started on Survivor...
