Can't wait till August ... it will be phenomenal!! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of kbhla@fastmail.fm Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2011 3:40 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: Herbie, Wayne, Dave and Vinnie (no Joni sighting) I was so lucky to get a last minute ticket to see Herbie Hancock with Wayne Shorter, Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta last night at the Disney Concert Hall. Herbie and Wayne perform there every year and it has always been impossible to get a ticket, so it was a real treat to get in this time. The concert was different in that Herbie nor anyone said a word until almost the end. They just came out and played the music. Since there was no "guide" I can't really tell you what they played but each piece was 15-20 minutes in length and featured solos by each musician. I can only describe the compositions as "mini jazz symphonies." Toward the end of the concert Herbie finally spoke a bit, mostly about his fellow musicians, who he raved about. For the encore they performed the familiar "Cantalope Island." All of them are at the very top of their game. Many times Herbie's virtuosity was so stunning, it was truly like hearing two sets of hand at the piano instead of one. Dave Holland was a revelation, Vinnie was astounding but Wayne is still my number one guy. It was a portal into musical heaven. Of course, I scanned the audience the entire time looking for Joni or related friends but never spotted her. I think those who are going to attend Joni's Jazz at the Hollywood Bowl in August are going to be just blown away. They are the masters. I do "get" Joni (as we all do here) and have appreciated and loved for since 1968. I certainly don't think being straight or gay has anything to do with loving her and her music or anyone's music. The premise is from the movie "The Kids are All Right". Please read and share what you think. _http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/culture/loving-joni-mitchell-you-dont- have-to-be-gay/7820/_ (http://www.pbs.org/wnet/need-to-know/culture/loving-joni-mitchell-you-dont-have-to-be-gay/7820/) # Stay well, Pearl in Florida BTW - Thanks to all of you who responded to my request to Vote for Lewisburg, WV for the Coolest Small Town in America in Budget Travel Magazine's recent competition. WE WON by a landslide because the people in that town of 3,400 rallied together! An article about Lewisburg (where I own a second home) will be in the September issue of the magazine which will help promote tourism and help the local and state economy there. Plus, we will forever have bragging rights in all advertising and promotional material for the town. New Orleans Singer Beth Patterson from PazFest 1 and 2 just played four days at the Irish Pub in downtown Lewisburg last weekend so you know it has to be cool! I heard her shows were great and was sorry I couldn't be there. Again, I appreciated all the votes, support and good wishes from my friends here. Itbs like trying to rank Thelonious Monk on the all-time piano player list. Hebs not bbetterb or bworseb than Bud Powell. Hebs his own species, his own genus. Like the aardvark. Like Joni Mitchell.)' I also found this bit interesting: 'And while itbs impossible to conceive of Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo teaming up in a picture as shrewdly commercial as bThe Kids Are All Rightb to sing a duet of bIn France They Kiss on Main Street,b youbll never get it if you donbt at least give it a chance.' Nice article. Thanks Pearl!
