It was a similar situation, in that there was no talking, just playing. I don't know if that's always the case or not, since I've never seen any of them in concert before. Similar to your experience, there were quite a few long pieces, especially the one they did at the end (or maybe it was the second-last one) before the encores. And I also thought of them as being more like jazz symphonies (or mini-symphonies in some cases.) I would not be able to tell you the name of one piece they played, but it was an amazing experience, with many changes in time signature, tone and so on throughout. In a few pieces, Wayne switched instruments between (I guess) a tenor and a soprano or alto sax. I was blown away by all of the musicians. In particular, I noticed a few of them had their music on sheets of paper that just seemed to be piled randomly but they'd shuffle them around, not missing one note as they did this, so obviously they knew where in the piece they were, and yet, what a precarious way of doing things! What if one sheet got out of place, or they dropped them, I wondered. But it didn't happen. These guys were absolutely brilliant and yet seemed so humble and nonchalant about it. In fact, they seemed surprised at how enthusiastic the audience was, especially at the end. Maybe they were so caught up in the music that they forgot there was an audience! I agree with you though: those who go to see Joni's Jazz in August are in for a real treat. - ----- Original Message ---- > From: "kbhla@fastmail.fm" > To: joni@smoe.org > Sent: Sun, March 6, 2011 3:40:16 PM > Subject: Herbie, Wayne, Dave and Vinnie (no Joni sighting) > > I was so lucky to get a last minute ticket to see Herbie Hancock with Wayne > Shorter, Dave Holland and Vinnie Colaiuta last night at the Disney Concert > Hall. It sounds so similar to what I experienced the other night. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who could not give a detailed, articulate account of the music! I sought out the L.A. Times review of the concert and Julius found it and posted it on Facebook. The reviewer does a very eloquent job of articulating what I think we both experienced ;-) Here is the link. http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/culturemonster/2011/03/live-review-herbie-hancock-at-walt-disney-concert-hall.html Kakki ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2011 #70 **************************** ------- To post messages to the list, send to joni@smoe.org.
