Hmm...not sure if I get it....are the portraits made of ice? Why are they displayed on ice? No info on their own website or by googling. It says they have 20,000 portraits/artworks by Canadians. I'm imagining some huge reproduction of a photo of Joni. Somebody go there and look! And sing a round of "The Circle Game" while you're at it. RR From a portrait of young sisters in nineteenth-century Quebec City to a portrait of singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell, Portraits on the Ice returns to provide another peek inside the vast collection available to the public through Library and Archives Canada. In collaboration with the National Capital Commission, Portraits on the Ice features 10 portrait reproductions installed under the Bank Street Bridge on the Ottawa Rideau Canal Skateway. The exhibition is on display until early March 2011. Lots of international amateur artists on this volume, but when you remember that "amateur" comes from "amor", and these are singers who are singing Joni covers for the LOVE of it you realize there's not a lot of difference. Herein therefore are another 21 recordings to throw onto the heap of Joni covers (nearly 3,500) as I write this. Thanks again to Paul for his never-flailing support, and thanks to all of who download these and check them out. Here's a link to download this month's CD's worth of new stuff: http://tinyurl.com/6yumwlo And here's what's in there: 1. Franziska Hudl - Woman Of Heart And Mind: Franziska is German and sings in the band Cinnamon. Her cover of WOHAM kicks off 133, and while she doesn't bring much unique to it, the song itself is just so darn awesome and pretty, that opening guitar riff just makes me melt. Anyway, I like her voice, the guitar sounds good and she has no qualms about using Joni's lyric instead of altering it. Off to a good start. 2. Hege Nielsen Kvartett - Black Crow: Oh boy oh boy! I do love Hejira covers, this one is the most popular choice off that album and is in the top 20 of most-covered Joni tunes. Norway's 'Kvartett' brings the energy down a bit and lets it breathe as a sultry jazz number with a nice piano solo. 3. Suzette Herft - Both Sides Now: Born in Sri Lanka but now resides in Australia and is a part of the folk scene there. Referred to by some as the "Australian Joan Baez", this take on the franchise comes frome her third album, released in 2009 and also titled "Both Sides Now". Her voice seems to have too much nasal quality to it, plus she's a little pitchy at times. 4. Gunilla Hedin - I Had A King: 5. Gunilla Hedin - Tin Angel: From Stockholm, Sweden, Gunilla's Joni songs are close to Joni's own takes with some nice additional instrumentation thrown in. Her voice is very smooth and easy and she does a nice job with these two early Joni tracks. The string quartet accompaniment to Tin Angel is particularly lovely and fits right in with the melody. 6. Mari L. McCarthy - River: Wow, she is really terrible. The tone, the pacing especially, but just about everything. Funny thing is, she's no amateur. She has a number of albums out and released this one (A Baby Boomer's Christmas) in 2007. She cites The Chipmunks as an inspiration, that may say it all. 7. Rachael Yamagata - Both Sides Now: One of the bigger names on this collection, this is Rachael's 2nd contribution to the database, having covered River back in 2004. This track was from a 2009 comp called "The Village", a tribute to the folk movement of Greenwich Village. She does a nice job of it, slowing it down to a drowsy lament and adding some different chord changes. 8. Karin Olma - The Circle Game: Karin is another German and this track comes from her 2008 solo album "Songs At The End Of The Day". It's just guitar and voice but the guitar is spritely enough to keep it interesting. Karin's voice is a little thin - feels like she is out of breath at times. But not to be too picky, she does a nice job overall. 9. Oona McOuat - Woodstock: Woodstock's one of those Joni covers, you never know what to expect. Sometimes a copy of CSNY, sometimes a copy of Matthews Southern Comfort, and sometimes something entirely original. The latter is the category for this one, set in a world music setting with some chanting, percussion, and even some reinterpretation of the melody. Oona's voice is soft and almost childlike, but I don't mean that in a negative way. And I really love the flute thrown into the mix, hard to be still listening to it. 10. Mark Murphy - Twisted: Mark is certainly no amateur, he's been a fixture on the UK jazz scene for decades. This recording of the Gray-Ross tune actually preceded Joni's (1961). However, Mark HAS lent his vocals to true Joni songs like Barangrill & Both Sides Now. His version of Twisted is tight, fun, and spot-on. 11. Lillemor Kuchler - Both Sides Now: Well, this one's a mystery. I know that I snagged it off her MySpace page but she's since deleted the page and I can't locate any bio information on her. In any event, her BSN is pretty laid back. 12. Gabriela Diaz - Big Yellow Taxi 13. Gabriela Diaz - River 14. Gabriela Diaz - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: Argentinian Gabriela Diaz pulls off an impressive hat trick with a trio of Joni covers. Her vocals are clear and clean, and she brings something new to all three of these songs. She plays guitar and sings BYT with spunk and a little swing. Her take on River is a pleasant change from the typically slower and plodding versions, she picks up the pace considerably and lets her rhythm section shine - not to mention the Steely Dannish rock-out guitar solo at the end. Viva la diferencia! Dry Cleaner also features some great propulsive playing from her band. 15. The Popcorn Orchestra - Both Sides Now: Cheesy popcorn at that. 16. Erika Lloyd - All I Want: Teaming up with guitarist Cameron Mizell, Brooklyn's Erika Lloyd released an album of pop/folk covers in 2009. Kind of playful at times, not so much at other times but she does try some different things so overall it's OK. 17. Justine - Blue: Some nice harmonies on this one, and the lead vocal is strong too. Makes for an interesting diversion on the expected. 18. The Red Letter Redemption - Chelsea Morning: Another one in the category of our opening track - I just love CM so much that even when someone does it just like Joni it makes me feel good, and that's pretty much what Red Letter Redemption does here. 19. John Thorley - A Case Of You 20. Andrea Lees - Both Sides Now: Well, this one gets off on the wrong foot when she sings "feather crayons". WTF? I've never heard of a feather crayon, I mean, how would even work, really? Plus her voice has kind of an annoying thing about it, the way she curls some of the words. There are some nice moments though, mostly the end. 21. Mary Fletcher - Big Yellow Taxi: And we wind it down with a taxi to take us away. Mary's spirited version mirrors Joni's own, the voice and guitar are nice and clean and the rhythms are strong. Mary's from Texas, this comes from her 2009 release, and her 2010 release features her take on "River" so we'll have that to look forward to. And that's it, folks. A big tip of the hat to those of you who support the project in any way, and I hope you find something in the lot to latch onto. It was the first time I had heard of this film and Joni's involvement in it. (It was released in 2004, during my missing years!! Hahaha!). I'll have to check out the archives to read the discussion but I thought it was amazing. Joni's portions of this documentary are at the website: http://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=113&from=search http://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=112&from=search Although I loved Joni's comments, the best part of the documentary is the Miles Davis 38 minute set from the Isle of Wight. I think that's the first time I've heard it. He named the piece "Call It Anything" a minute before he stepped on stage. Plus I loved the percussionist Airto Moreira's improvised imitation of the music of Miles ... amazing. If you have a chance to see it, I would recommend it highly!!! Michael F. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2011 13:06:35 EST From: WirlyPearl@aol.com Subject: Please help Lewisburg WV Win #1 Coolest Small Town! Hi Jonifriends, _Vote for America's Coolest Small Towns - Budget Travel_ (http://www.budgettravel.com/bt-srv/coolestsmalltowns/CST2011.html) _www.budgettravel.com_ (http://www.budgettravel.com) Please read. This took a long time for me to write. I would like to ask for your help and support on something that is dear to me. I would like you to vote for LEWISBURG, WV. in BUDGET TRAVEL MAGAZINE'S "COOLEST SMALL TOWN IN AMERICA" contest. Vote before the poll closes on February 11, 2011, and then spread the word. You can vote daily, every 5 hours and it takes about 3 seconds. They're looking for towns with a little bit of an edge, more avant-garde than quaint. The contest began a few months ago. There were 80 small towns which were whittled down to 20 and LEWISBURG, WV has been in the lead since the beginning. Two days ago we are almost 7,000 votes ahead but another town, Astoria, OR, who has been our main competition, (and much bigger- pop. 10,000 to our 3.500) is kicking into high gear. Our lead has diminished to about 4,500 and they are gaining quickly. The whole town of Lewisburg, even the state of WV has rallied in support with news media, word of mouth and internet, etc. Someone even had a huge sign at the Today Show this week! Astoria is still gaining quickly. Please vote. This isn't just a popularity contest. The winning town will be featured in Budget Travel Magazine with a readership in the millions. The point of this is the positive economic impact through tourism we will all reap! That's vital for a small town like this. Last year's winning town of Eli, Minn. said the boon to their tourism and economy was priceless. I live in Hollywood, FL but about 5 years ago, my husband Steve and I bought a house built in 1869 in the wonderful small, historic town of Lewisburg, WV. to use as a vacation home. We had spent a weekend there the year before, visiting a friends new craft gallery and fell in love with the place. We have since had most of the home renovated and visit several times a year. We love it here with it's great galleries, shops, restaurants, theater, music, street festivals and events, Carnegie Hall and near the amazing Greenbrier Resort. Not to mention the beautiful setting nestled in the mountains with all sorts of outdoor activities and the warmest people. I could go on and on. I love it. This is a very cool and sophisticated place, not at all what you might expect West Virginia to be. That's more of the image we hope to project. I'm trying to do my part to help get votes so I'm asking with all my heart for you to bookmark the sight and vote every time you go to your computer. It says to vote every 5 hours, but sometimes it will take the vote sooner if you refresh your browser, so try that sometimes. The other towns are wonderful, I'm sure, and I'd love to visit many of them, but Lewisburg, WV deserves the recognition. Thank you all so much for your support. Just go the BUDGET TRAVEL link above, CLICK on the STAR on LEWISBURG, WV, CLICK on 'ADD TO BALLOT', then CLICK on 'CAST YOUR BALLOT'. Then if I may be so bold, pass the link and request to your facebook friends or other groups or friends that you think might help. The contest ends on Feb 11, so just about another week to go. I've been part of the JMDL community since 1998 and you have been a very important part of my life, although I do lurk more than post. Even if you don't know me, just the fact that we love Joni and are on this list together makes us friends. I'm looking forward to seeing a wonderful group of you at the Joni's Jazz show at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. I'm always up for a Jonifest. Again, thanking you in advance for your support. I've become very obsessed with this the last few weeks. I will probably be sending a short, quick reminder to vote daily. I wouldn't ask if it wasn't important to me. I held off asking while we were so far in the lead. Warmly, Pearl Weisberg in Hollywood, FL I left the NJC off because I wanted to reach as many of you as possible. Thanks for understanding. sorry to be so long ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Feb 2011 15:26:05 -0500 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: Joni Covers, Volume #133 Harsh Winters Weather This is a very interesting collection.
