Sue Tierney- McNamara has prompted me to write as the emergence of a FB clan seems to have upset some people and inspired others. I think there is room for it all. I think of FB as an extension of this list. I don't particularly think there is a conflict but FB is a place of quick interactions, where your thoughts are fleeting and quickly responded to in a one on one -" just for the moment" way....A sort of "let's go outside and have a smoke on the decking" at Joni Fest (not that I smoke anymore). I have always been a bit of a lurker on here but remain interested none the less. This list has such a special place in my life as does the music of Joni. I have been a member for only 8 years now - some of you have been here much much longer. In those years I have met some wonderful people at Fests - just as Sue has mentioned below. I have attended one at Full Moon - 2003, one at an orchard in the middle of the Corbieres in South West France 2005, and also ran the UK Fest of 2008 (and have another one planned for this August - places still available - contact me) This list and the people on it have a place in my life. I have been grateful more times than I can count for having made the acquaintance of people I love and trust as personal friends Sue, get yourself on a plane, come to the UK, come and see the wonderful Holycombe and chill for 4 days with people you will enjoy. It is such an intimate venue with a maximum of 30 people and you will love it. See Dave Blackburn's photos on FB - they are what FEST is all about. Any one else want to come ? Get in touch.. Love to all Queen Lulu! 19 Jan 2011 10:38:13 -0500 From: Susan Tierney McNamara Subject: RE: Subject: Re: Facebook NJC Whoa, a sociological discussion! Thanks Mike! I think a true test of this is if a person feels comfort in the Gemeinschaft and alienated in the Gesellschaft. I love technology but I often feel that it is not a replacement for real human socialization or intimacy. In this respect, I feel that both the list and Facebook are dimensions of Gesellschaft and Jonifests are Gemeinschaft! So I've stayed out of the JMDL vs Facebook debate because I feel that both venues are great for the exchange of ideas. I enjoy Facebook because of the more visual interaction. JMDL is more cerebral, which I enjoy, too. But nothing beats hanging out with my Joni buds at a warm dinner with sharing of music, laughter and love at a Jonifest. As an introvert I have to balance my natural tendency to isolate in technology with my need for face to face intimacy. Love, Sue ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2011 01:32:17 +0100 From: "Laurent Olszer" Subject: Facebook, C&N, njc Thanks Laura & Catherine for the article: http://www.pcworld.com/article/210859/the_paranoids_guide_to_facebook.html I'll make sure my daughters make good use of it. I think many people don't realize potential problems. The Israeli army for one does realize it because they forbid its soldiers from publishing any hint on FB about their whereabouts or anything like that. In fact they have cancelled many operations because of leaks on FB. To change subject, I strongly encourage all of you to scrape up and attend C&N 2011 tour while Croz's 9 lives are still not exhausted. I went to CSN twice last july, and even though they played the same material both nights, the feeling & the renditions were really different. Both magical evenings though. Croz's very talented (and very handsome) son James Raymond has really matured and his solo moments are jaw dropping. Too bad he's too discreet in the band. And yes there was that Joni mention from Nash, who clearly never recovered from being dumped, but who would? Well, that was probably my least-favorite Joni show - not that she didn't put on a great show, but by focusing on all the new (and at that time unrecorded, I think) material, she really lost most of the crowd, though obviously not you! :) Throwing in a couple of familiar songs would have given us something to hang onto while she tried out the new material. The band rocked, though! Just my two cents.
