Gesellschaft and Gemeinschaft have one-on-one translations in English.
Gesellschaft is the German word for society, whereas gemeinschaft means
community. German nouns are always spelled with initial capitals which makes
them naturally pompous. I think the idea you prssent would come across a
little bit more comprehensibly if you include these words rather than explain
the German definition. German scholars - however smart they may - are not
known for their tendency to ease life for readers (sorry Monika and all other
learned Germans on and off this list).

Pedantic as ever and as pompous as a German noun.

I enjoyed it a bunch, I think Steven Tyler will be a great judge; he's 
certainly got the singing and performing experience, he's funny and unique 
and appears to be enjoying himself. Plus, even when the performer is a 
total trainwreck he offers something constructive. Never have liked J-Lo 
but I'm keeping an open mind. Hopefully she won't be another Ellen who 
just likes everyone - seemed like she had a hard time being hard. As for 
the performers, that one girl bouncing off the walls was surely strung out 
on something!

Synchronicity! I just finished Daniel Swift's "Bomber County:
The Poetry of a Lost Pilot's War." It's a very interesting, odd book
regarding the author's search for information on his grandfather,
an RAF bomber pilot killed in WWII, combined with a study of how
poets have experienced and written about war. Randall Jarrell figures
quite prominently.

How can you beat me to the punch with the Jazz Fest list?? I tried to stay up
till 12:01 this am and see what it was but I crashed and burned around
11:30pm. I am pumped about the line up and the fact that it looks like my band
and I will be home for both weekends for a change. Very excited about Arlo
Guthrie coming, Robert Plant and Band Of Joy (PATTY GRIFFIN), Jeff Beck, The
Punch Brothers, and Wilco amongst all my local faves. Hoping to be able to do
the hang thing big time this year. JMDL folks make your reservations and lets
have a mini PazFest. If I get enough people that want to come I can see what I
can do about getting a hotel deal again.

 of Jarrell; WHP is an acute and entertaining critic of poets, especially

I know William Pritchard, who was the outside reader for the dissertation
version of my book on Jarrell. His biography appeared in the same year as my
book. After reading the heavily revised version published in 1990 by
University of Georgia Press, he provided the following blurb for the
dustjacket:

"Richard Flynn knows Jarrell's work inside out, and he writes with
sympathetic accuracy about the art of Jarrell's poems and children's
stories. Flynn's steady focus on Jarrell's successful attempt to reinvent
the idea of childhood gives us new insight into the work of this valuable
and important writer."

Subject: Joni mention in Los Angeles Magazine

Was just in a dentist waiting room reading the Dec. 2010 issue of Los Angeles Magazine with Steve Martin on cover.  Celebs who grew up in LA write a piece about what it meant to them growing up there, Steve Martin, Jodie Foster, etc.  Two Joni mentions, first from Jamie Lee Curtis who says she remembers periods spent in several canyons (Laurel, etc.) and her favorite album was Ladies of the Canyon.  Rita Wilson (married to Tom Hanks) said she worked at the Hollywood Bowl and got to see several people perform including Joni.  Yea!
