Corinne Bailey Rae Mark and Cat, both your emails have removed the romantic notions (think the cover of Hejira) I have about snow! However, lovely to hear about it. Snow forts sound just up my street! If we get any more snow I shall make one and pelt all the kids passing by. One wonderful thing happened in our garden when we had snow before Christmas (unheard of for years in the UK) was that we had 6 waxwings visit our rowan tree. They hang out normally in Siberia and everyone was amazed that we had them here. They were beautiful. It made the national bird watching news here! As I mentioned last week, I bought a Philips CD burner over 10 years ago so that I could convert tapes (Laura Nyro, Buckingham-Nicks, Marc Jordan, and Joni tape trees among others) to CD. I still have a couple tapes that I never converted (how many '83 shows does one need on CD, really? I've got about 20 or so.) I don't have it set up as an "easy set of files to access", however. Perhaps some of the JMDLer's who have put this material on Dropbox or use torrents (I do neither) can assist. <(p.s. Do I remember correctly that we once circulated a version of The Circle Game by Dolly Parton from her 70s TV show?> Yes we did - of course since then Ms. Parton has released her own take on BSN with Rhonda Vincent & Judy Collins (buried in the mix unfortunately). Thanks Mike! I think a true test of this is if a person feels comfort in the Gemeinschaft and alienated in the Gesellschaft. I love technology but I often feel that it is not a replacement for real human socialization or intimacy. In this respect, I feel that both the list and Facebook are dimensions of Gesellschaft and Jonifests are Gemeinschaft! So I've stayed out of the JMDL vs Facebook debate because I feel that both venues are great for the exchange of ideas. I enjoy Facebook because of the more visual interaction. JMDL is more cerebral, which I enjoy, too. But nothing beats hanging out with my Joni buds at a warm dinner with sharing of music, laughter and love at a Jonifest. As an introvert I have to balance my natural tendency to isolate in technology with my need for face to face intimacy. But coincidentally, yesterday, my husband's copy of PCWorld Magazine (February 2011) came in the mail and I started reading the article on page 33: Security Alert, The Paranoid's Guide to Facebook: Five Steps to Privacy. I think this article has just the information your looking for. It's actually an easy read and gives detailed step by step information to work with Facebook settings to get the amount of Security your looking for. What drew me into reading it was the heading: Facebook knows who your friends are, what you like, where you live, and what you buy. Our advice will help you secure your personal information. According to the article: "Even if you delete your Facebook account, the photos and details you shared with friends can still lurk on Facebook or the Internet at large. When in doubt, don't post it -- but if you do, control who sees your items by using the lock feature.........." Then goes on to give simple, but detailed, instructions how to use this particular feature. You can buy PCWorld at the store or see it for FREE at the library. Or you can order 2 risk-free trial issues....if you do this right away you'll probably get February as your first issue. If you don't want to keep subscribing after you receive your second issue just write 'CANCEL' on the invoice and return it and you'll owe nothing and will get to keep the two issues. https://w1.buysub.com/pubs/PW/PCW/pcw_linkall.jsp?cds_page_id=840&cds_mag_code=PCW&id=1295472926041&lsid=10191534105013411&vid=2 Hope this helps! Laura Hi Y'all I am lately catching on the digests and i don't know whether the following comments have already been posted. My concern with Facebook is mostly the safety issue: I've read that FB stores old data and actually sells it. I keep telling my daughters that prospective employers are likely to purchase those embarassing photos. The fact that the data was erased a long time ago does not mean it won't come back to haunt them forever. Of course i sound like a paranoid old fart to them, but i wouldn't be surprised if this leak was true. Think of wikileaks on a personal level. Does anybody know more on this matter? Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2011 14:04:51 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Facebook & personal message, njc Thanks for the tip, Laura. You can read that article online as well at: http://www.pcworld.com/article/210859/the_paranoids_guide_to_facebook.html One of the things that bothers me about Facebook is that they don't do enough to inform people about privacy issues. It's up to us, many of whom aren't all that knowledgeable about how to navigate that system, to figure it out. Concerning the jmdl page that was accidentally set up on Facebook by a lister trying to organize is contacts, now that it exists, ANYONE who is in that group can add anyone else to that group. It's not an invitation that the person can choose to accept or not. You can simply be added to that group. You I understand that you can then choose to take yourself out of it, I find it kinda disturbing that people can add you to something without your permission. And, while I don't have an issue with the jmdl group itself and am OK with being there (after being shocked by the initial volume of email notifications I got that day), it makes me wonder whether or not a person could be added to some group they would never want to have any part of. I know someone raised that point before but I don't remember who it was, so my apologies. Sometimes it pays to be paranoid! - ----- Original Message ---- > From: "est86mlm@ameritech.net" > To: joni@smoe.org > Cc: olszer@xlsecurity.com > Sent: Wed, January 19, 2011 4:42:55 PM > Subject: Facebook & personal message, njc > > Laurent, > > I am no Facebook expert....in fact I'm not even on Facebook. Perhaps you already know that Joni performed Passion Play at one point before she had written words for the song. Here's a write up from the JoniMitchell.com website. I remember seeing a video of that performance, I can't locate it now, but it may still be kicking around somewhere. by Jim Leahy "Jony Mitchell: L'impegno, l'amore" is the title of the Italian TV broadcast of Joni's mini-concert at 1988's San Remo Song Fest where she received a songwriting award. ....But the real treat, the one that ends the show, is a "work in progress" -- a song that would eventually become one of her most elliptical and enigmatic song-poems: Passion Play. Just guitar chords and Italian-sounding syllables: "bom de dom dom day . . . bella dom dom day" with a few words: "It'll take time, but time brings changes." Peaceful, almost meditative -- this kind of committed singing you can't fake. (Submitted by Mauro Regis on May 10, 2000): This was the second (and last) Joni's appearance in Italy after 1983 tour. She was prized with the Premio Tenco, and performed a solo set of about thirty minutes. She was cold and throat ill, but played an incredible set, with one of the early (or maybe the first) live performance of "Night Ride home", and a building up "Passion Play" with no words. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2011 17:21:43 -0600 From: Kate Johnson Subject: Vancouver Playhouse's Joni Mitchell: River What's this? http://www.davidcooperphotography.com/music.html Just for your interest.
