I have put this out to the JMDL FB page because I have had poor access to my Aurabright e-mail - which seems to be working for now! Hurrah! I am putting on a UKFEST at Holycombe from Thursday 25th August to Monday 29th August. WWW.holycombe.com if you want to see the location. The cost is #220 including bed, breakfast and evening meal and wine and beer or other drinks - if you do not do alcohol. The event is available only through me and is a not for profit. I have about 10 spaces left, mostly in shared rooms. I am limiting the numbers to 25 as I shall be doing the catering again. The house is a private residence and does not have wheelchair access - sorry. I do not want to use a larger or commercial venue as HOlycombe has such a magical air to it and really is special and this is more of a gathering than a full on FEST. it is a VERY relaxed few days as those who attended last time will tell you. The idea of the FEST started with a conversation between some of us who had attended the one I set up in 2008. We are beyond being Listers who get together for Joni related gatherings.. It is about friendship now, and I thought I would do another one and I stress it is a musical event and a FEST and Joni will be sung, celebrated and discussed but I would hesitate to call it a full on JONI FEST.. But the last one was enjoyed by so many it seemed like something I would like to go again. Please write to me off list for full details and bookings will be on a first come first served basis. In one episode of the Martin Scorsese 'Blues' series, UK jazz singer George Melly (who, with Mick Mulligan's band, toured the UK with her in 1958) says, with rather a naughty grin, that "on stage she practically had a halo - but off stage she liked a brandy, she was quite randy and behaved very badly, I'm glad to say. They become more careless. Besides, it is just too much of a bother to keep setting up all those rules on FB, I know this from people who use it, they just end up thinking "What the hell, I don't care if so-and-so reads the info I put out there even though it isn't really meant for them." And the result is that in the end everybody knows everything, whether it is their business or not and whether the original person is really happy about them knowing. I think this erodes the way we have related to each other for centuries, and we are just sleepwalking into it. But since most people don't really care and they have the right to not care, I know I will never win the argument and that is OK, as long as I can choose to stay out of it myself. My point about the JMDL is VERY different and separate from the above point. This is where I really rub my eyes and wonder how naive people can be! It is so obvious that discussions have moved from this list to FB, how can anyone ignore that it is weakening this list? (For instance, I have heard about a Joni doll being discussed, and another thread about Kilauren.) My original comment was and remains: either people keep moving those topics to FB without having a parallel discussion here, which penalises people like me who don't want to join BF and which will slowly make this list irrelevant and dormant, or they remember their loyalty to this list and do something about it! I'm not saying everybody has to stick to this list because I am here and would like them to, I am just asking them to be honest and aware of what they are doing! It is for visual media like photos and videos, which is why it is called "face"book. Below are some of the comments under the doll photo on FB. They don't make much sense if you can't see the photo above the comments. I'm of the opinion that the best criticism or most meaningful expression of fear of something occurs when one has personal experience with it. I'm a PhD student at The University of Virginia (you can look me up on the UVA music dept page, under grad students if you're so inclined: www.virginia.edu/music i think). I did a Masters at The University of Georgia prior to coming here, where I did some work on ecological/feminist themes in Joni's 80s and 90s work. I have presented that paper at a couple of nerdy academic conferences, and I'm in the planning stages of a dissertation on issues of voice (the singing voice, the "voice" of the composer, etc), and I'm trying to figure out how to make Joni a major part of that. At the moment, I'm working on a side project that involves the song Passion Play and just want to compare some things on the recording, the tabs available on the homepage, and the published sheet music. I'll gladly yack about my joni-related research if anyone has further questions. Don't hesitate to ask. Also, I know a long time ago there was an annual or maybe bi-annual JoniFest. Is some manifestation of that event still happening? At some point, I would love to attend and/or talk to people who attended past events. I'll send out a more formal request for that later one. Hope everyone is having a safe & happy 2011, mj - --- On Tue, 1/11/11, Mags wrote: From: Mags Subject: Re: Night Ride Home (Passion Play) Music To: joni@smoe.org, "MattJones" Date: Tuesday, January 11, 2011, 3:54 PM dissertation on Joni?
