FB is a great tool, Lieve, but that is all it is -- a tool for communication. You can use it or misuse it, but it's unlikely it can replace or crowd out the deeper and more extensive social contact you prefer. I'm a writing and reading person, so I like to rattle off a meaty letter or receive one. But a lot of my friends, family and acquaintances are not, and so FB is perfect for them because they can write just a tiny fragment of what is occurring in their lives -- and that is more than I would otherwise hear from or about them for long periods, before FB. So for that, I find FB quite wonderful. It has renewed old connections and forged some new ones. And it makes communication easy for people who are not writers or phoners or visitors. It is far better than nothing. At the same time, because all you get from FB are "sound bites" (sorta: short, pithy), it does get dull after a while and easy to take yourself away from. At least in my case, I don't have to worry about it being addictive, for that very reason. A quick scan every day or two pretty much does the trick! It's also helpful in my work (The Canadian Encyclopedia) because I'm the editor for the film and theatre sections, and a lot of actors and others in these businesses are aware of the importance of making themselves available in this way to their fans. It's free PR for them, and they use it well ... and it makes contacting them directly a lot simpler than having to track down agents, etc. Joni should have a FB page, actually ... I do wonder how much fan mail she receives these days. Or public attention, for that matter. I wonder about her health, and whether she's writing and singing. We aren't seeing new interviews in newspapers, but a FB page is often run by a celebrity's publicist and can keep the fans "in touch" ... Maybe now that I have more time, I can go. It is such a beautiful language. You are pretty good picking out the Rollieflex reference. Here are the English lyrics. What a beautiful song. Kakki If you say my singing is off key, my love You would hurt my feelings, don't you see, my love ? I wish I had an ear like yours, A voice that would behave All I have is feeling And the voice God gave You insist my music goes against the rules Yes, but rules were never made for lovesick fools I wrote this song for you But you don't care It's a crooked song, ah, But my heart is there The thing that you would see if you would play the part Is even if I'm out of tune I have a gentle heart I took your picture with my trusty Rolliflex And now all I have developed is complex Possibly in vain, I hope you weaken, oh my love And forget those rigid rules that undermine my dream of A life of love and music with someone who'll understand That even though I may be out of tune when I attempt to say How much I love you And all that matters is the message that I bring, Which is: my dear one, I love you ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim To: kbhla@fastmail.fm ; JMDL Sent: Monday, January 03, 2011 6:08 PM Subject: Re: Desafinado trivia (njc) I truly enjoyed your post.
