I've had "Songs of a Prairie Girl" for a while now but never really listened to it as it just came across as another compilation. So tonight I'm on shuffle in iTunes and this pops up. The first thing that I notice is the mix. It sounds... new? Modern? I guess I really never paid much attention to my HDCD version of DJRD until now, but this one sounds so fresh, like it was recently recorded. And Joni's vocals are just out of this world. It almost sounds like she re-recorded them for this project but I know that can't be true. I've always had a deep respect for this song but this "Remix" as it's being called feels like veil being lifted off my old version. Whoever did this gets my fist bump. Anyone else notice this? Or has this been discussed in the past? It kind of makes me wish that Rhino would do similiar remixes. "Down To You" would be cool to hear in a similar remixing. I was aware of the re-mix, I haven't picked up SOAPgirl yet for the same reason you mentioned. But your comments have me intrigued, I'll see if I can find a cheap copy on ebay. I've always been a PP fan, I always appreciated the scope and ambition of it. Not that I'm always in the mood for it, but it's definitely a track I can get lost in. To give the off main stream things a chance. Kids is really good, and it was after the fact that I realized just how good it was. How difficult would it have been to gain approval from Joni's people for her work in that film? I know this seems like a silly question but really..what is the process? The following clip which has nothing at all to do with the film or Joni Mitchell, was posted elsewhere, and I thought some might want to see it, here. Thanks Mags for sharing this, and I must admit I do feel almost personally linked with this film, simply because it hit me so perfectly when I wasn't expecting anything, and suddenly there was this very intelligent, well scripted and well acted film, with a huge Joni scene in the middle of it. I sat there in the cinema, feeling like it was my birthday or something, an my son was smiling at me and really "getting" it! In the same way, the other film that turned me upside down this year was Crazy Heart. The music, the wonderful acting of Jeff bridges, it just doesn't get any better when it comes to surprises. So those are my definite top 2 films of the year! Like with falling in love, I think surprise is an indispensable element for creating magic. If you plan it, it does not work. That's my conclusion of the year, for what it's worth... Yes, that's exactly it: a good film keeps revisiting, because it has taken hold of our mind in a real way. Like you, I empathised with everybody in the Kids film. With Crazy Heart, I was singing the songs for weeks afterwards. Little details kept coming back, like when the Jeff Bridges character tries to put the chain on the door of his motel room, but there is nothing to hook the chain in... Details like that were just so brilliant. And I kept wondering about the reunion-with-his-son scene which I read had ended up on the cutting floor - how dared they cut that out, I felt entitled to that scene! And lastly, I must agree with Sarah, Social Network is a great film. I only went to see it because, with my membership of our local cinema, we sometimes get free previews of films on a Sunday morning. You know how I dislike Facebook, so this film was very low on my priorities list. But it was an excellent film, very well scripted and acted with some good psychological insight. I'm quite sure you'd enjoy it. Lieve PS Anybody seen "Chico and Rita"? I saw it a few weeks ago, it's a cartoon set in 1948 Havana, beautifully drawn with a lot of authenticity and with fantastic jazz music. On the down side, the main characters are very roughly drawn and the story is less than flimsy. But just for the music and the atmosphere of what Havana, it is a gem. ________________________________ From: Catherine McKay To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com; Mags Cc: joni@smoe.org; Lieve Reckers Sent: Tue, 14 December, 2010 16:58:55 Subject: Re: the kids are all right NJC "the Kids are all right" is one of those films that has stayed with me.
