I hate to say it, but I thought he was awful. 'Jet' and 'Band on the Run' both sounded like a vinyl record being played on a bad turntable - the rpms were off or something. Even the band didn't sound right. But as far as singing, I think 'pitchy' would be an understatement. Paulie wasn't even hitting some of the higher notes closely enough to be called flat. It made me wonder if the monitoring was off. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt. I wasn't in the room so I didn't see or hear the beginning very well, but he performed a medley of part of 'A Day in the Life' and 'Give Peace a Chance', as a tribute to John, I assume. All I really saw was 'Give Peace a Chance' and he got the audience to sing along on that one. I also heard a little of 'Get Back'. I'm wondering if Sir Paul is one of those people that Grace Slick talked about - too old to be getting up on a stage to perform rock and roll. I loved the Beatles and like some of Wings' stuff. But last night, particularly the 'Band on the Run' songs did not come off well. Maybe it was the choice of material. Maybe it's just time for Paulie to hang it up. Of course, the audience cheered and paid proper homage to Rock Royalty. Maybe being an ex-Beatle accords some special absolution from criticism or judgment. I suppose that many would consider it a thrill just to see Sir Paul perform. The guys were singing way off key-my theory is that they're used to setting up in a stadium/arena with a huge stage. They had tons of amps, up loud to get the tone. They probably couldn't hear. Paul was on Jimmy Fallon a couple of nights ago, too, and did a comedy version of Yesterday ("Scrambled Eggs") and a solo acoustic version of his song to Lennon, "Here Today". I wouldn't count him out yet. I *was* trying to figure out if he was wearing a rug, though.... RR From: "Mark" > Did anyone else see Paul McCartney on SNL last night?
