I think those archives are valuable and I am glad we can get to them. By the way, could you let us know what is happening with the JMDL website, and the tribute to members who have died over the years? I know I keep banging on about this, but I am sure I am not the only one who cares about it. It is a testimony to what you have helped to build up, Les! If any further help is needed, let us know and I am sure we will do what we can. With my very best, Lieve ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Sat, 27 November, 2010 1:34:27 Subject: JMDL archives revisited Joniphiles - To answer a question from way back... the JMDL archives that show up in web searches are a fact of life, I guess. Most of the problem comes from the Smoe server archives. I've contacted the owner a number of times in the past year, all to no response. Short of driving over to his house and pulling the plug on his server, I think we are stuck with that situation. On the other hand, for those who are interested in a legitimate, fully searchable, up-to-the-latest-digest archive of the JMDL, it is now available again. This database is locked behind closed doors and will not be picked up by any search engine. It requires a login - one which will be only 'advertised' here on the list. This login information will change every few months (and, again, announced only here on the list) to keep it as secure as possible. Check it out - quite handy indeed if I say so myself. http://jmdl.com username: siquomb password: sisotowbell Thanks, Les NP: The Tallest Man on Earth "King of Spain"... man, I love this guy's music! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Nov 2010 07:44:41 EST From: FMYFL@aol.com Subject: Re: JMDL archives revisited NJC I agree Lieve, this is important to me too Les. I've been keeping a small journal since 1981. I usually read what I did for the past two years on the day I'm writing in it. 2 years ago today, I had sent Smurph a text while he was in the hospital and he texted me back. I never got to see a memorial page for Bob, but I do remember the pages we had for Kenny B., MG Val, Wally, and J.J. I hope there is a way to retrieve those. I've come back before, and I will again. In the meantime, I thought y'all might enjoy this quote from Joni's hero Nieztsche: The true man wants two things: danger and play. For that reason he wants woman, as the most dangerous plaything. Friedrich Nietzsche Kind of explains Joni's fascination with *men*, too, doncha think? Also, has anyone ever noted that Joni's "Hunter/the Good Samaritan" could be construed as an answer song to Dylan's "Shelter from the Storm", just as her "Just Like Me" was some kind of response to "Just Like a Woman"? That line never popped out for me before but now I see what a tight little nugget it is.> Here's my take: he defines his virtue by putting her down. Usually, I don't think about that line, I just let things slide, like Bob Dylan's word play on his first few albums.
