Such landmark writing teams as Cynthia Weil & Barry Mann, and Carole King & Gerry Goffin came out of the Brill Building, leaving a legacy of Top 10 hits behind them. Music is truly at the root of the story of GRACE OF MY HEART. The movie's creative team chose to represent the melodies of the Brill Building in a new group of songs especially written for the film. They decided to take the inventive approach of commissioning new songs to be written by untried writing teams, in some instances combining legends of the past with current musical acts. "God Give Me Strength" was written for the project by Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello. Denise Waverly, the Carole King-like lead character (played by Illeana Douglas) pours all the emotion of a broken heart into her performance at the most pivotal point of the film. Douglas' acting, the great words and music of the composers, and an impressive vocal performance by Kristen Vigard left audiences feeling Denise's emotional pain in her plea for help. The original motion picture soundtrack from the film omitted Vigard's version in favor of one performed by Bacharach and Costello. We are pleased to present Kristen Vigard's arresting rendition here, a version previously commercially unavailable." Joni was asked to write a song reminiscent of her BLUE period by film director Alison Anders. "Joni Mitchell wouldn't or couldn't recreate the feel of her BLUE period ("I don't ever want to go back there, I don't ever want to be that vulnerable again," she told Anders) until one of her cats went missing. The beautiful resulting song, "Man From Mars", sounds like the best of her work prior to For The Roses." Originally, Joni's version of "Man From Mars" was going to play at the end of the film, during the credits. However, at some point during the creative process, Alison Anders decided to use the song within the main body of the film. For the sake of consistency, it then made sense to have the song performed in the voice of the Denise Waverly character. THAT meant Kristen Vigard. So, using Joni's 'Original' instrumental track, a new vocal track was recorded by Kristen Vigard. Joni felt that since her version wasn't in the film, why should it to be on the SoundTrack Album. Go Figure! I mean "Gimme A Break!" The Denice Waverly (Kristen Vigard) performance of "God Give Me Strength" is the emotional high point of the entire film and IT is Not on the SoundTrack Album either. Oh Well. In any event ... Joni's version was accidentally included on initial releases, THEN ... quickly recalled and ReMastered with the Kristen Vigard vocal. Of course some of us were able to track down copies, so the song is not really all that rare to JMDL members.
