I always enjoy anecdotal explanations of how acolytes come to Joni or she to them. It was DJRD that pushed me over as I had heard other songs and liked her "well enough." "Free Man in Paris" also resonates as I remember entering a deli in Miami and this song was playing and I truly felt "unfettered and alive." It turns out, he had just come from New Orleans, attending a funeral for his father, famous jazz photographer Herman Leonard. We had a nice conversation about jazz, music, and New Orleans of course. His father had relocated there in his later years. Very cool chap. Played some nice tunes. Yet another entry to make in the list of cool people I've met at this job. His photos are brilliant, capturing a splendid time in a by gone era. Just before his death, a signed print could be had for a pretty decent price- not sure if they have elevated since then. Years ago, when I was living in Vancouver, I took a holiday to the Oregon coast, and found in some gallery, a show of his. Didn't know who he was at that time in my life, but was blown away! I have his book "Jazz giants and journeys" which is absolutely lovely. Anyone interested should google him and go to his site- also talented in areas other than portraits of musicians. best SE NP: Paper Airplanes- the day we ran into the sea H U G O B O S S Sent by: owner-joni@smoe.org 11/08/2010 07:56 PM Please respond to To cc Subject A little New Orleans synchronicity NJC Was just wrapping up things at the Atlanta Airport today when a gentleman walked up and asked if he could play a bit. "Unmarried Woman" was a favorite too. She also did a funny movie with Burt Reynolds about dating where she was so nervous beforehand that she stuffed paper towels into her armpits ... and then forgot to take them out before the date. I can imagine how anticipating going on a date with either Alan Bates or Burt Reynolds would have made anyone that nervous ... I also saw an interview with her and it seems she and Al Pacino were bf/gf back in the early days of their careers. They seem an unlikely couple but there you have it. She died of chronic lymphocitic leukemia, whatever that horrible thing must be. Off to subject the family to nonstop Joni in honor of her 67th!
