That's what I hear on repeated listenings and that's what the lyrics sheet has. And tho it's a subtle difference in meaning,"ideals" makes more sense in the context of the song, to me at least. I could go either way with "ghost," tho I too always heard it as "ghosts." The lyric sheet has it singular. Also, I trust the lyric sheet when it has "split-* tongued* spirit" because "he" is in the song credits: "The Split-Tongued Spirit, El Bwyd." Now, does anybody know for certain who "El Bwyd" is? ;-) On Thu, Oct 14, 2010 at 9:05 AM, Catherine McKay wrote: > Ha. So did I. In fact, I even read it that way. EA: I met Rick in L.A. around '67. He invited me to Woodstock. It was autumn. It was this rock and roll suburb. We went to Robbie Robertson's. He took me to the Hudson River on this long bridge. It's like the story of your life. We stopped to take a look at it. I remember I saw a train go by. I went back to L.A. and wrote Blue River. Joni Mitchell heard the song, loved it. She started singing with it. She loved the title. She was working on the Blue album. She wanted me to lend her the title for the album. She liked it better than just Blue. But, I didn't let her have it (laughs). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 2010 09:32:00 -0400 From: "S. M. Roque" Subject: Astrology and Scorpio Totems I love the imagery painted on the DJRD double album. I was VERY into astrology at the time and I loved how DJRD focused on the less obvious animal totems, eagle and serpent, of JM's own astrological sign, Scorpio. I liked using astrology to explain basic personality traits and/or to give me insight on other signs, and this song does a great job of expressing the battling spiritual aspects of a Scorpio. Some astrologers say the dove is also an animal totem of this sign, Scorpio, and on the album cover (back and front) are doves flying all over. "The eagle and the serpent are at war in me The serpent fighting for blind desire The eagle for clarity What strange prizes these battles bring These hectic joys - these weary blues Puffed up and strutting when I think I win Down and shaken when I think I lose" When I first bought this album, I rarely played the PP side... Wow, this performance really proves the kudos Joni received after Blue about her raw emotion and virtuosity. It almost seems like she is in this trance although being totally in control. It's hard for me to describe the vibe she gives off, like she's in another dimension. All of the performances were really powerful, even when the songs were lighter like BYT or Free Man in Paris. Really :) There was a wonderful article in the Toronto Star about one of my favorite singers, Barbara Cook on her 83rd birthday. In the story, the author tells her of all of her songs she sings, his favorite is when she sings Janis Ian's Stars, which is also one of my favorite songs. She goes on to explain why she too loves the song and ends up quoting the lyrics. I forwarded it to Janis. I know she does read her email though she doesn't always have time to respond. In less than a few hours she sent me a very sweet email thanking me for forwarding the story to her. Have tickets to see her December. I never miss a chance to see her in concert. After almost 40 years she remains truly great live. Jerry On Fri, Oct 15, 2010 at 5:15 PM, Susan Tierney McNamara wrote: > Thanks Ingrid, that was beautiful. Hear it here: http://kids.niehs.nih.gov/lyrics/spangle.htm Joni also said, >the home of the brave and the free> is nearly a quote from the same song. Francis Scott Key said >>O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?>> Joni changed it slightly and therefore made a nice rhyme for"duality" and "multiplicity".
