But this one is almost unbelievable, Sue. Unless, of course, you lived through that particular era and phase of pop music. Even then, it still seems like a bad dream. I clicked on this video and just *seeing *the song title, I literally gasped out loud and scrambled to click the STOP button. Agggghhhhh!! I think I nearly wrecked my parent's car once, frantically punching station buttons to get away from it! "I got love in my tummy . . . " EEEEUUUUWWWWWW! I don't think I can take any more. Uncle! I've had to put the NJC tag on, even though the blurb states: "Compilation which unlocks the BBC vaults to explore the burgeoning singer-songwriter genre that exploded at the dawn of the 1970s and became one of the definining styles of that decade. Featuring classic songs from Bobbie Gentry, Kris Kristofferson, Buffy Saint-Marie, Janis Ian, Gordon Lightfoot, John Martyn, Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Don McLean, Ralph McTell, Loudon Wainwright III, Don Williams and Paul Brady. Programme sources include the Old Grey Whistle Test, In Concert, Top of the Pops, Sounds for Saturday, the Bobbie Gentry Show and One in Ten." This description is the same as the one they use for the 3rd part, to be broadcast this coming Friday, but I think it was written by someone who thought (s)he was writing it for the whole series, because it includes names seen last week (Joni, John Martyn, Loudon Wainwright), and some names not yet seen in either part 1 or 2. It is more confusing because part 1 had its own blurb (probably written by someone else) saying: "Featuring Elton John's Your Song, whose line 'My gift is my song and this one's for you' helps define this new, more personal style of songwriting, alongside an eclectic selection of classic artists and songs. James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Harry Nilsson, Sandy Denny, Steve Goodman, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Judee Sill, Jackson Browne, Neil Diamond, Tim Hardin, Joan Armatrading, Tom Waits all feature next to more commercial hits from the likes of Terry Jacks and Gilbert O'Sullivan." - which was correct, except that they left out a few names. So anyway, the actual singers featured in part 2, as I noted them down, are: Peter Sarsted, Carole King, Randy Newman, Ralph McTell, Cat Stevens (again), Jim Croce, Bridget St John, Judy Collins, John Sebastian (unfortunately singing a silly song), Michael Chapman (also with a rather weak song i.m.o.), Joan Armatrading, Al Stewart, Kevin Coyne, Paul Simon, and Billy Joel. Anyone (unfortunately, only if on an internet connection in the UK) can watch this 2nd episode for another 10 days via this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00v4kdy which can also put you through to the first part, but only for 1 more day. And one more thing: last week part 1 was followed by a "singer-songwriter song circle" and then the 2007 Carole King and James Taylor concert at the Troubadour. This week, also after a song circle, they broadcast the Carole King live studio performance for the BBC in 1971. You can catch up with it for another 7 days through this link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b0074sq9/In_Concert_Carole_King/ Yes, it is the concert where she calls James Taylor up on the stage, and they do "So Far Away" together, afterwards she calls in Danny Kortchmar and they play "It's Too Late". That last number is the clip they use in the Singer-Songwriter compilation part 2 that I just mentioned, but I'm sure I have seen this whole concert also elsewhere before, so it must be available through other means and for non-UK residents too. You-tube, I suppose. Anyway, I hope these links give a few more people the chance to see and enjoy the programmes. And heaven knows what crazy thread will follow from this post! I'm not complaining, I'm glad for a bit more life back on this list!
