Here is my contribution, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iQiwqiPeLGk It's one of the first songs that really saddened me for making it so big in the charts. "Is this what has become of music?", I remember my 14-year old self asking. Until then, I thought popular music was getting better and better (see the success of the Beatles etc), but then with this song I saw calculated business coming in, in my eyes, for the first time. Now these days I'm usedto the opposite: you have to search through the shite of the charts (whatever they are called these days) to find a single pearl here and there that is worth it. And I learnt, of course, pretty soon not to rely on those charts to find the good music that, thank goodness, was and is still being made. Luckily, by the time this dross came out, I had already discovered Joni Mitchell, Blood Sweat and Tears, Fleetwood Mac etc. And one more thing about this thread: I am sure I'm not the only one who has to admit to actually "liking" (in a popsy kind of way) some of the songs submitted here. Personally, I thought "Love grows where my Rosemary goes" was pretty, and when I was heartbroken by some boy or other, I did sing "Which way you're going Billy" at the top of my lungs to get some of the emotion out. But Telly Savalas singing "If" is just so disgusting that I have instantaneously lost all my respect for that man. That is musical and visual porn. On with my day now! I just came across it yesterday and now consider it somewhat silly as many of the other songs mentioned were. Actually, when I was 14, the only music I didn't care for was the Rolling Stones and I'm not quite sure why. Perhaps I felt threatened they were taking away some of the Beatles' popularity. Today, I love hearing an occasional Stones tune. In my later teens, I began hanging out at a cool record shop and loved finding the next undiscovered metal band (undiscovered in our group of friends). I was the 1st in my clan to own the likes of Trapeze, Deep Purple, Ronnie James Dio's little known band Elf, (Ronnie) Montrose's debut album with little known Sammy Hagar, and Robin Trower. All of my friends thought I was cool turning them on to lesser known rock/metal bands at the time. But also at the record shop, I was turned on to the likes of Joni, Van Morrison, The Eagles, Joe Cocker, Marshall Tucker Band, Dan Folgelberg, and even Waylon and Willie, all of whom I loved. Jim PS back on that 1st record player I owned, three of the very 1st 45's I purchased were "Indian Lake" by the Cowsills, "Snoopy Vs the Red Baron" and "Harper Valley PTA". The second album I owned was the soundtrack to the Clint Eastwood movie "Fistfull of Dollars" which I bought in the discontinued record section at K-Mart. - --- On Fri, 10/8/10, Lieve Reckers wrote: > From: Lieve Reckers > Subject: Re: Nasty, godawful, etc. songs (njc) > To: "Michael Paz" , "Gary Z." > Cc: joni@smoe.org > Date: Friday, October 8, 2010, 3:06 PM > Well if you disregard the silly > lyrics (as I did because my English wasn't good > enough to know what muffins were), then I think the music, > for the time, was > quite new and refreshing.
