You can rate the songs as they play and that helps the genome that selects the music they play for you. Anita x ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 20:42:41 +0100 From: Anita G Subject: Dave Blackburn and Robin Adler Conker Cabin Gig Report (long) Reading between the lines of many of the recent Paz Fest2 reports, I seem to recognise the struggle the writers have of describing the experience of sharing such joyous times to others who were not present. Words seem too inadequate and sometimes trying to find the words can detract from the experience because (unless you can paint with words a la Joni) they often dont seem enough. Last week I read Marks post from Oz wishing JMDL members would find the cash and time to haul our butts out to his neck of the planet, so that he can deliver Mark Fest1. Mark and Travis didnt make it from Seattle to New Orleans, but I can almost hear Marks longing to get back to another Joni Fest, after his experience of Full Moon. The sharing of a Joni Fest experience has always been part of the picture for me, whether about Full Moon, Idyllwild, France, Holycombe or New Orleans. I wrote last Friday about my excitement to hear Robin and Dave rehearsing in Steph and Is new house extension, preparing to play Conker Cabin (our one time garage in the garden now converted) on Saturday night. Hearing songs like Borderline and Crazy Cries of Love being played in our house with just Steph and I to hear them felt sublime. So imagine my surprise, when, being big (so I thought) about the SHARING experience of Fests and mini Fests, I began to formulate plans to lock Dave and Robin in my house so that they could never get out. I conjured a plan to tell people who were coming to see them play at Conker Cabin that they hadnt turned up. I could then keep them for ever, locked away and just bring them out to play just for ME. As long as I kept them fed well, with a decent malt whisky and a few guitar strings for Dave and the odd beer and decent salad for Robin, maybe they need never leave! Steph has always been the grounded person in our relationship and when I mentioned this plan to her, she simply muttered Psycho and walked away shaking her head. I regretfully realised perhaps this was not such a good plan and managed to find a small ounce of altruism. I threw away the padlock and chain I had secretly bought to lock Dave and Robin in. The weather forecast all week had not been good. I had so hoped folk coming to the gig would be able to enjoy our garden and be dry. Heavy rain had been forecast all day, but the Saturday morning dawned with some light drizzle and I got hopeful. As the day progressed, the sun emerged and even the winds dropped. By the evening, it was beautiful and rather warm. I gave grateful thanks. Steph and I decorated the garden with lights and flares and, as it was September 11th, we commemorated the date by securing a yellow ribbon around a rowan tree in our garden. I had made a decision that I would play some tunes myself and was most pleased when all the folk who had been invited arrived in time to hear me play! I was most blessed when my main man in terms of guitar playing, Dave King, was also free and willing to come and play with me. I started the evening off to the 22 people in the cabin on my own with I think I understand, which proved to be a wee bit of a struggle. The words have just too much meaning for me at the moment, but I got through it and then introduced Dave King to play with me a song called Snow. It was written my brother who had come to his first Conker Cabin gig. It was significant because it was my brother, Mike, who had introduced me to Jonis music after hed seen her play in 1968. As always, Daves playing lifted my set into a different league and so did his lovely wife Maria who added some harmonies. Not only that, but on a number of mine Sacred Ground Mr Blackburn grabbed a djembe and added a real funky rhythm. By that time, I was really having fun. I told Robin during the day that what I wanted beyond all else was to enjoy playing again and to be in the song. So often recently, I felt like I was miles away watching myself go through some motions that were wracked with anxiety. On this evening, as I started to play, the only thing I noticed was a bird singing outside really loudly. In that moment, I felt like I had come home. After an interval, Dave and Robin came on and invited my dear Dave K to sit it on a couple of tunes, too. I didnt write the order of tunes down because I was so enthralled, as was everyone else, but I think they kicked off with 'Woman of Heart and Mind.' I can recall California, For the Roses, a stonking sing along version of Free Man in Paris. There was a great arrangement of Harrys House that Dave K blew a neat lead break over some r n b guitar that Dave B made look so easy. Dave and Robin played their own arrangements of Just like this train, Woodstock, Blue Motel Room, In France They Kiss on Main Street, Black Crow Amelia A Case of You, Both Sides Now. Many of the audience werent diehard Joni fans and Dave and Robin explored some of Jonis history and talked about the songs and the times when the songs were written. This was both informative and revealing. People really appreciated it. The Joni songs just came on and on, but Dave and Robin had decided to end the night by performing their arrangement of Stings Fragile. They did this to commemorate in their unique way the dreadful events of September 11th. It was chilling and absolutely the right thing to play. As I write about it to you now, my goose bumps are back recalling it. It was utterly beautiful. An encore was required and we drummed and clapped along to 'Dreamland.' As with the Fests I mentioned earlier, words cannot do justice to the experience of being there. I have never seen Dave Blackburn and Robin Adler as tribute artists, although, of course, they both personally appreciate Joni greatly. I can imagine Joni being quite derisory about tribute acts. What I know I have said here on this list is that what, for me, is in what they do, I would describe much more as 'in the spirit of' Joni. By that, I mean they interpret her songs in a way that sounds new and fresh. Daves guitar arrangements are extraordinary and, of course, Robin brings meaning to every word and phrase and makes it count. And what a stunning voice she has. Having Dave and Robin play at Conker Cabin has been one of the best nights of my life and to support them with my man, Dave K, has made me feel a very lucky girl indeed. The thing is, I know UK listers have a chance of seeing Robin and Dave play in Greenwich on Saturday 2nd October. Im not sure of the name of the club, so Im sure Lieve will post about it when shes back from the US. Whatever you do, if you love Joni half as much as I do, dont miss this gig. Itll be worth travelling some distance for! Nobody does Joni better. And, if youre very lucky and ask Robin politely, she may tell you how she does scrambled eggs with fried potatoes. Yup, she cooks wonderfully, too! I so wish Id not thrown that padlock and chain away Anita x ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 14:45:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Laura Stanley Subject: Guitar Odyssey This is good. http://www.acousticguitar.com/issues/ag44/CoverStory.shtml ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2010 21:12:48 -0700 From: David Gizara Subject: From Gizara KLCC Joni Radio Special Hello: Bob tells me that 23 folks have downloaded this summer's Joni Radio Special.
