Affectations as opposed to style. It's very hard to be true to yourself. For instance, I don't care too much for the second album I made [Clouds]. I like the first one, the first one's honest. Blue is an honest album. Clouds has some honest moments on it, but at the time, I was singing a lot with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, and they had a style, out of necessity, to blend with one another. They had a way of affecting vowel sounds so that when they sang together, they would sing like a unit. I picked up on that and there's a lot of that on the album. I find it now kind of irritating to listen to, in the same way that I find a lot of black affectations irritating. White singers sounding like they come from deep Georgia, you know? It always seems ridiculous to me. It always seemed to me that great singer - now we're talking about excellence, not popularity - but a great singer would sing closer to his or her own speaking voice." > Anyone else hear any of the CSN&Y 'affected' vowel sounds? It's probably because I'm English but I don't hear this on any of the songs on Clouds. Facebook have shut down my account. What's worse is a friend of mine fell for the scam, which claimed I was stranded in London and had been mugged. My friend, unaware of the scam, thought he was rushing to my aid and sent the scammer hundreds of dollars only to realize he'd been scammed. I guess I broadcast on Facebook that Robin and I were headed to England this week and the scammer used that fact to create a plausible cry for help. So, I won't be posting pics of our trip on Facebook unfortunately and may not sign back on to FB again as the whole experience has left me feeling pretty vulnerable. If you need to reach me you have my email. We'll be having minifests along the way in the UK and Denmark, seeing Anita, Chris, Les, Lucy, Jeff Hankins, Bene, Henning and Christina and playing lots of Joni music. Talk to you all later. Lieve has set us up with a great gig in Greenwich on Oct 1st at Oliver's Jazz bar. Any London listers please come on down and hang with us. Happy September all. We don't travel with a computer so we'll be checking mail sporadically. What a pain. I can fit 2 more folk in to Conker Cabin on 11th if anyone in the UK can't make any other of Dave and Robin's UK gigs. Let me know off list if you would like to come. Personally, it must be one of the best gigs outside of PazFest! Love Anita x On 31 August 2010 19:08, Dave Blackburn wrote: > And I neglected to mention Lieve among the VIP listers we'll be visiting. I contribute rarely, I get very little if no response, no matter. I do better contacting people off list. I've e-met some really wonderful people that way. I use only phone, email, snail mail, and face to face. As for Joni, sounds like she's preparing to become her own kind of Hana, doing what must be done to help other sufferers of Morgellon's. Some say it's in service...among the wide wide world of noble causes, she found this one. mc ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 2010 01:41:01 +0000 From: Sherelle Smith Subject: Looking forward to seeing everyone in New Orleans Hi my dear Joni friends! First of all, I deeply apologize for my abscence from the list for what seems like forever. I work a lot of hours now among other disruptions. One of the happiest disruptions I've had is the birth of my grandson Michael Saidi Thomas. Words cannot describe the joy I feel every time I see him. Patti sings "Michael from Mountains" in text to my Facebook page. Looking so forward to seeing everyone who is heading down to New Orleans this week. Unfortunately, I can't get there until Friday evening due to obligations at work. I also have to get going first thing Sunday morning to get back to further obligations at work. It's not so bad...I like what I do. I am so excited to be celebrating Joni with you. I keep trying to put into words how much she and her music means to me but it's not possible. She holds a place in my heart as an artist that no other artist can get to. Sheer genius! Paz, I look forward to coming to seeing New Orleans for the first time in person! My camera is ready! I find it very disturbing and offensive that anyone would treat a fellow human that way. The idea of anyone feeling that it's OK, or they have some kind of right to take advantage of other people in that way really leaves me feeling that some people really do suck, and I have to remind myself that, most likely, most people do not. I had my home broken into once many years ago and I understand your feeling of vulnerability. I wonder what we all can do to avoid this kind of thing happening, while still remaining open to the possibility of meeting some wonderful people, whether in the flesh or virtually, since it seems we're all potential targets. I do hope this experience doesn't diminish the good times you are sure to have in the UK and Denmark. ________________________________ From: Dave Blackburn To: Jonilist Digest Sent: Tue, August 31, 2010 1:44:32 PM Subject: Facebook hack etc NJC Dear Joni friends, I'm writing to let you know that my Facebook identity got hacked this weekend as well as my private email account, diverting incoming emails to some hacker for a couple of days.
