NJC Yes, I might just do some dancing. But no slow dancing with you Jimmy, don't ask. As for not signing up for any singing slots, I'm leaving those for the pros. I didn't sign up for anything last time and if memory recalls I did me a whole bunch of singing. 9 days. She had a brain injury from years before - in fact she has had many knocks to her brain subsequently, mostly as a result of falling (like down the subway) when she was drunk, but when she was living in a shelter 4 years ago for a few months after I left her over near her parents' house after encouragement from a social worker and family at a time when I was psychotic myself, she went out at 6 one evening and two gangsters stole her watch after first hitting her with a pole across her forehead...for a second time she temporarily could not speak, and then subsequently taught herself to speak again. She visited me in the admission ward of a mental hospital christmas day, but she couldn't speak! strangely she managed to be let in for visiting by some staff member. The friend sometime after 9, when she phoned her mother to let her know she was sleeping on the couch, he phoned an ambulance and she died in Groote Schuur Hospital. She had lived with me for most of the years since 1995, and I asked her not to come back when she visited her mom on old-year'seve for the weekend, to drink. (She was banned from drinking here). Joni, Lori has always followed contemporary music (even though it's not great, most of the time), but since I discovered Youtube I'd been watching videos and songs there, and Lori oneday, when I wasn't here, came upon your song Both Sides Now, namely the 2000 rendition. She was from then on transfixed by your performance of this song, and never ever has any song touched lori like that...she would play it over and over, and i think it was the last song she listened to when i was with her (though on friday she was listening alone here) i promise you that nothing before or since has moved her like your performance. She said that you had never ever been so good and looked so good and sounded so good as with your performance on that occassion: she was truly stirred profoundly, to the depths of her soul...and her amazement never abated. She loved your voice best then....Out of her disability allowance she managed, many months ago, to buy 'Shine', her one and only album of yours (I have most of the others). She had been selling her CD's to buy alcohol, and I think she had this one (selleable one) left, and about two weeks ago she brought it here, and asked me to keep it for listening and asked me to accept it as another birthday present for my birthday on July the 19th, for which she bought me 2 fruitcordials. i accepted on the proviso that it be my christmas present for upcoming christmas. i know her soul is delighted that i have mychristmas present. i thank you for opening and touching her heart like no song ever did. And it wasn't just your voice, it was that, the accompaniment, and your words, that i think touched her pure heart with their delicacy. A hobbiest recorded music of the day (Basie, Rushing, etc) and it's now being restored. Some of the discs were damaged beyond saving. It was interesting to me that some of the aluminium was damaged by water because (as I understand it), vinyl is impervious to water. I believe that this era was before magnetic tape was invented; the records were "cut" directly from the radio on aluminum or shellac. It was cool to see how the archivist cleans the records and I found some tips. He uses the same cleaning solution that I do. The link below might be unusable in a few days.
