Hi Gang, Just watched these 4 clips on U-Tube, all apparently from the same episode, or maybe two, of "Let's Sing Out" a CBC show from 1965. Alas, the only one I could hear was Me & My Uncle, which was clearly not a Joni Composition. Born to Take the Highway was the only title I recognized -- did she write that one? I think I heard it once, and it sounded like her style. My guess is Mountain Dew was a cover, and what little I could hear of Favorite Color sounded Joni-ish. Is that one a recent discovery? I don't recall ever hearing of it before. I've got to buy speakers for this thing! The one thing I would like to see is his lyrics. I cannot see anything on his minimalist Caldo Verde CDs nor his website. I think this gives ammunition to those who see his songs as all very similar (if you cannot see or remember the lyrics, then the overall song may sound samey to an unpractised ear). I think reading the lyrics would allow listeners to separate the songs and give them a more personal/individual identity. The UK version (is there a US version?) of UNCUT magazine has in its September issue an album by album feature on & interview with Mark Kozelek which is interesting, and which I fear will cost me some money pretty soon. He is a bit of a mumbler, so it's hard to make out the words when you hear him. I'm not crazy about that particular website because the section with all the info in it is a very tiny window in the middle but if you open the frame in a new tab, it's easier to see everything. It also helps those of us with poor eyesight to use a larger font. The new album isn't on it (yet?) ________________________________ From: Mike Pritchard To: list ; Bob Muller Sent: Wed, August 18, 2010 5:13:09 AM Subject: Kozelek VLJC Some more thoughts on Sun Kil Moon, and on Kozelek in general. Hi Walt, Those wonderful videos and tunes came from two different episodes of "Let's Sing Out", a CBC folk music show hosted by Oscar Brand. The videos came to light thanks to JMDL'er Doug Meek who exercised his rights to peruse the CBC archives and find them and share them, and they have since been distributed pretty widely. A VHS tape of all the Joni bits was distributed at one of the Full Moon Jonifests a number of years ago, and Ashara was about to go berserk from making 75 copies and hearing it play over and over again! Born To Take The Highway is Joni's song, and it's a great one to be sure. It's been covered by The Foggy Dew-O many years ago and most recently on the excellent BYT album. Had Joni released this one it would be a staple on the folk circuit, of that I have no doubt. Favorite Color is also Joni's, and the discovery of the video also marked the discovery of the song. Not as strong as Highway, it's the only JONI recording of it that I've ever heard. Will Taylor & Strings Attached did a cover of it on their Joni tribute a couple years back, learning the song by way of the video on YouTube. This one's actually pretty easy. Kozelek and Red House Painters do a cover of The Cars' "All Mixed Up" on the "Songs For A Blue Guitar" album, and (the late)Ben Orr of The Cars does background vocals on CMIARS. BAM - two degrees. When I saw Kozelek at the Grey Eagle in Asheville, he was hanging out in the courtyard with the rest of us enjoying a crawfish boil before the show. Bob NP: J. Walt, if those letters that you type don't show up when you are working off line, e.g. in a Word document, then I would agree with Jim that your keyboard may be sticky. But if the problem only occurs when you are writing emails on-line (i.e. if you have to have the internet on to access your emails and you are writing straight "into" a website, such as I am doing now by using the yahoo mail system), well then the problem may have to do with your internet connection. I had that problem a few times, and I discovered I did not have it when composing a Word document on my PC, so it was clearly not the keyboard that was causing the problem, but rather some sort of intermittent internet connection that was "losing" information between me typing it in and yahoo "recording" it. (I am obviously using laymen terms here, but I hope you understand.) I have no advice as to how to get rid of that problem, with me it lasted some days or weeks and then disappeared again. But one tip: you can first compose the message in Word and then paste it into your email, so that way you can get around the annoying problem when it gets too bad. I hope you have burned a CD or DVD of your \My Documents\ folder. If not, you should consider doing that soon because I think more trouble lies ahead. You said that they, "put in some kind of patchwork Wniwdoooz 3.1416 in its place". Interesting that the version number is pi. :) Anyway, if you started out with a legal installation of Windows, they should get your machine restored (using the disc(s) that shipped with your computer) to a legal copy of Windows. I'm not 100% sure, but there's a possibility that you won't be able to get security updates with an illegal copy of Windows. You also said, "about every third letter I type doesn't show up" which obviously isn't right yet. Have them try a different keyboard because I'm suspecting stuck keys or maybe someone spilled Coke on it. It doesn't sound like the computer is to fault for dropped letters. Good luck. Keep in mind too, that it would only be worse on a Mac. :) Jim L'Hommedieu >Also, I keep getting frantic messages telling me I've got fake windows software. I mentioned this to the proprietor when I staggered back the two miles in 95-degree heat so he could put in *some* kind of word processor, but as for the frantic fake windows messages, well, um, they'd had to (I may be paraphrasing here) dismantle Windows 7 to get my touchpad working again, and then put in some kind of patchwork Wniwdoooz 3.1416 in its place. Turns out he'd just fired the guy who'd mangled my PC (a college buddy of his, I suspect). The word processor works, as far as I can tell, but I'm araid to let this guy touch the poor sick thing anymore. So about every third letter I type doesn't show up, and it takes me an hour to type something that once would have taken me five minutes.> ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2010 09:26:18 -0400 (EDT) From: scam1@freeway.net Subject: re: Great sign!
