While I am really disappointed that (part time New Orleans resident) Rickie Havens has to depart on the opening day of Pazfest for Norway. I will survive! I have signed on Christine Ohlman a singer in the Saturday Night Live Band and Queen of the Bee Hive hairdoos, who I had dinner with in Ct. last weekend while on tour. Some really ambitious songs have been selected by some Pazfest vets that I am really excited about. The Astor Crown Plaza has graciously extended my cut off date for the deal on rooms there. I am a few rooms short to get a free suite to party in on French Quarter night which is leaning towards Saturday night with Sunday night being the dinner/jam/party at my home. If you have not made your plans yet please contact me if you have any questions etc. There are a couple people sitting on the fence (ouch!) that are looking for roommates and travel companions so talk it up. We have quite a few newbies coming which I am excited about. One of them is Jim in Texas who will be helping with airport transfers and has stepped up to the plate in being your typical JMDL wonderful guy. The hotel seems to think that everyone thinks it is not safe to come to New Orleans cause of the oil spill etc. That is the farthest thing from the truth. And the city needs visitors. The economy here sucks therefore there are lots of deals here to be had for your coupon queens. I am also still have a few open slots for anyone interested in coming to play. There are quite a few New Orleans musicians willing to be session players for people who need help. That list includes: George Porter, Jr. (The Meters), Ricky Sebastian (John Scofield), Guitarist Dirk Billie, drummer Kevin Aucoin, and many more. Come on and sign up and if you are coming but have not booked the hotel yet please call and set up your rooms cause I will release the rooms we are holding soon so that I am not liable to pay for them. Hope to see more people sign up soon. Husky, deep, distinctive, unique. Nobody else sounds quite like her. One of my favorite Patricia Neal performances was in Robert Altman's 1999 movie 'Cookie's Fortune'. This movie was kind of a-typical for Altman. It told a fairly straight-forward, linear story about an elderly woman's suicide in a small town in the southern part of the USA. Glenn Close played the over-bearing relative who goes to extreme lengths to hide the suicide and make it look like a murder. Glenn and Julianne Moore as her slow-witted sister are both hilarious. And Patricia Neal was great as the title character, Cookie, the woman who shot herself and set a whole series of zany events in motion. Neal was also in the sci-fi classic 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' and played the fiery Dominique Francon in the film adaptation of Ayn Rand's 'The Fountainhead' which was the spark for her love affair with Gary Cooper. She played the wealthy, rather jaded woman who 'kept' George Peppard's character in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. I don't think I have ever seen the entire film 'Hud' but from what I have seen, she gave a great performance in that one. I was always fascinated by her. I remember seeing 'The Subject Was Roses' when it came out. It was the first film she did after having had a series of strokes. She must have been a strong woman. She persevered through a lot of hard knocks in her life. She was also married to the author Roald Dahl for 30 years. A footnote that might be of interest to some: Patricia Neal got her first big break as the young Regina in Lillian Hellman's play 'Another Part of the Forest', a prequel to 'The Little Foxes'. Regina was the character that Bette Davis played as a middle-aged woman in the film of 'The Little Foxes'. Tallulah Bankhead was the original Regina in the Broadway production of 'The Little Foxes'. Tallulah had another husky, deep voice, similar to Patricia's. But I still say nobody sounds or has ever sounded like Patricia Neal. Another one of the greats, gone.
