Just thought I'd pass on a significant Joni moment that I had recently. No chance meeting or anything exciting like that. The '90s angst driven soap opera, thirtysomething has just been released on DVD so, I was reliving my youth and started watching them from the beginning. Episode 3 is a story about second guessing and deciding whether to follow a deeply held moral or throwing it to the wind and taking the corporate path of greed for the sake of comfort and wealth. The story ends with Michael taking the latter choice which greatly disappointed me. The "B" story is about Hope flirting with and being flirted by a young handyman and finding it educational to test her will. The final scene is of most of the main characters sitting around the living room as Joni's, The Circle Game plays over their joyous revelling. Corny, I know but, this show was a big influence on me even though I was slightly too young for the demographic. It seemed open and honest to me at the time, not hopelessly contrived as it does now. I fell in love with the music and have become quite the fan of G.W. Snuffy Walden. Ricki Lee Jones has the honour of having a song included in an episode and on the soundtrack album but, Joni has the honour of being the first non original artist played in an episode. I found the soundtrack in a local record shop for a buck and it's probably the best dollar I've ever spent. As I recall, it was the first show that showed two men waking up in the same bed in the morning. I may have to revisit it on DVD myself. It seems to me there were at least 2-3 Joni references in it. I would be very surprised if "River" wasn't featured in one episode, but memory fails - including my ability to check the jonimitchell.com library because I can't remember my password to log in! ________________________________ From: Mark-Leon Thorne To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Wed, July 14, 2010 6:52:26 AM Subject: thirtysomething The final scene is of most of the main characters sitting around the living room as Joni's, The Circle Game plays over their joyous revelling. Looking at the covers of River (210 listed in the database), only a handful were recorded before this thirtysomething episode, and none of these were on Christmas or holiday-themed albums: - -Reilly & Maloney included it on their 1977 live album called "Alive". - -Dave van Ronk included it on his 1973 album titled "Songs For Ageing Children" 99% of the KNOWN covers of "River" were issued after the 30-something reference - perhaps they DID place it as a holiday reference. I'm willing to give them the credit until evidence pops up to suggest otherwise. He's crossing the pond to play a gig at the Union Chapel here in London at the end of July - you can listen to 'Admiral Fell Promises' and 'You Are My Sun' (both absolutely gorgeous, imo) @ http://ontouracrossthepond.blogspot.com/ Can't wait to hear the rest of the album (whatever it's called!) - the guy's amazing! very best PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2010 13:12:27 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Sun Kil Moon (njc) Hi Paul, The track I was listening to was "Aselund", the first track from his new release which, as you stated, is "Admiral Fell Promises". You can listen to THREE tracks here: http://www.markkozelek.com/ Sun Kil Moon, like Red House Painters, is essentially Mark Kozelek who has also released albums under his own name. ALL of them are great. From what I understand, he's spent a lot of time recently listening to classical guitar and that influence clearly shows on these tracks. And I would highly recommend catching him live if and when you can. I've seen him in a small intimate setting in Asheville (The Grey Eagle where I most recently caught Jonatha Brooke with Phyliss Ward) and it was a wonderful show. "Woodstock" was the opener for both shows. Last night Graham dedicated "Our House" to Joni. I think he never got over her, but who would? He still has humor though. He adressed the audience with "there's a guy in the 4th row with binoculars, why the f... do you need binoculars, do you want..." as he began to unzip his flyer. Interesting show, Croz explained the record company wants them to make an album of covers so they're testing different covers on us. Warm response from the audience during Behind Blue Eyes (Who) and Midnight Rider (Allman), both of which had "???" on the setlists. Also Steven dedicated "Rock n Roll Woman" to Veronique who was in the audience. Thanks Mark, http://dudeism.com/greatdudes.html "the ladies seemed to end up as notches in their frayed leather belts of free love...not Joni - she made it and moved on to more important things..." I rest my case about the notches in the belt, (lthough I made it a long time ago) - and we all agree that there are perhaps a few notches in Ms. Mitchell's belt. There are a few of us that lived that time and know what it's like to prove ourselves by behaving like the men around us did - we moved on. So did Joni. She is so a Dudette, Duder!! I quote from the above mentioned source: "While most of the sixties rock revolution was fomented by guys, the ladies seemed to end up as notches in their frayed leather belts of free love, or dead from intemperance like Mama Cass and Janis Joplin. Not so for the quintessentially cool dudeist saint Mitchell who sang smartly about individualism while smoking and cursing like a sailor and living life on her own terms. She paints pretty good too. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mark" To: "gene" ; "joni" Sent: Wednesday, July 07, 2010 7:04 PM Subject: Re: Great Dudes in History > Lol! This too funny! Interestingly, Joni herself in an interview following her being reunited with her daughter commented on this very subject. She said something like, "We all thought it was free love back then. What we learned was, nothing is free."
