So I found that in fact the Bad Blake character is an amalgum of several real country singers, mainly Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson and Merle Haggard. (It was first intended to just be Merle Haggard, but there were problems with getting the rights to his biography). Also, the musician Stephen Bruton, who collaborated on the film and died from cancer just after the film was made, gave Jeff Bridges a lot of tips on the real life-on-the-road for a that sort of musician. (For instance, the hilarious detail of emptying a bittle full of piss after a long car drive!) I may agree that the story is not very strong in terms of being complex or unusual, but it is so damn real in all the detail, that it really got under my skin. And the music - wow! From never having liked country music, I now totally "get it", and I feel another piece of my education has fallen into place. I immediately followed it up with watching a DVD of Oh Brother Where Art Thou, where the music is also produced by T-Bone Burnett, and of course I have also bought the DVD of Crazy Heart. Apart from the new songs written for the film, sung beautifully by Jeff Bridges, there are some other little gems on it, such as "Joy" by Lucinda Williams and "Reflecting Light" by Sam Phillips. There is even a number by Kitty Wells, which I wondered if it could be enough of an excuse to remove the NJC tag, but I guess that's a bit too tenuous... Well for anyone who wants to get a flavour of the film, here is the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0349E7kFEM And here is the recording of one of the live songs, taken by e member of the audience on his mobile (cellphone): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkMDJuKeix0&feature=related But please remember: after Mrs Bridges and Michelle Pheiffer, I am next in line, so please be fair! But I will see it. The story I got is Bad Blake was a portrayal of Billy Joe Shaver, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeJ4kp1AwY4. The Dude spent quite a bit of time with him prior to the movie trying to get into character. Billy Joe like Joni he not only writes the songs but he lives them. Hope you enjoy the video and tell me there is no similiarities to Bad Blake. I still adore him, but he's all yours. :-D Terra P.S. He is very likeable and a genuine dude, dude. (Or should I say, dudette.) I'd love to hang out with him for a while, but I do not lust after him, so you'll get no competition from me on that end. I think you could take on Michelle Pfeiffer too, so you only have to get rid of Mrs Bridges! (However, I will add that I have the greatest admiration for couples who stay together, so don't be hard on her.) I did see "Crazy Heart" and there was a lot about it that I did like. Some of what I liked was what I also didn't like cuz it was like, kinda gross: the almost-too-gritty-at-times realism. I found myself getting very angry with his character and wondering why a younger woman who had been hurt before could possibly fall for an old, drunken bum, even if he was Jeff Bridges, and why she would trust him with her child. I did like the way he handled the sound-guy at the venue where he was the support act, and the things he had to say about how today's music business seems to be more about flogging merch than anything. And of course, the music was fine. Fine, as in, real fine, not just OK. I'm not big on country music either, as a rule, but there are certain artists I quite like and I think a lot of the music I do like is sort of part-rock/part-country anyway. I do love "The big Lebowski" (one of my favourite movies, I'd say - just thinking about it makes me laugh) and that dudeism.com website is lots of fun. Like, anyone can become a dudeist priest, man, and it's cool that Joni is considered a great dude. Yes, I promise to be very easy on Mrs Bridges. I don't want to steal him really, I would be perfectly happy with a sharing arrangement. (Terra, thank you for moving out of the way too!) And Catherine, when you talk about the almost-too-gritty realism of the film: that's what I meant when I wrote that I first found the character disgusting, and then I really shocked myself when I suddenly realised I actually fancied him something rotten! It definitely had something to do with the way he came into his own when he started playing music. He had such a confidence and command of those gorgeous songs - at least when he wasn't puking his guts out! The friend I went to see the film with was much more taken with the Colin Farrell character, and I agreed that would have been my natural choice too. But that would have been so predictable, and I think it's nice to know we can still be struck by lightening when we least expect it!
