We live in Wootton in Bedfordshire, England. If any UK listers are interested in joining us for an impeccable evening of Joni music, please contact me off list for more details. Lots of love Anita (And now I write:) I just want to clarify that Anita's Conker Cabin evening on 11 September in Wootton near Bedford is the original gig, planned a long time ago, which I don't want to detract from in any way. Please, those people who can go, don't think twice. The Conker Cabin is a lovely place, and Anita and Steph will be the perfect hosts. The gig I have booked for Dave and Robin in Oliver's jazz club in Greenwich (London) on 2 October should also be great, and I hope that anybody in the London area who can't make it at the Conker Cabin for whatever reason (date or distance) will be able to make this one. I will send more details nearer to the time, but if anyone wants details earlier, please write to me privately. Ever since April, when I saw Crazy Heart with (original Dude) Jeff Bridges's Oscar winning portrayal of Bad Blake, country rock singer in the vain of Chris Christofferson-gone-to-seed, I have wanted to post about this film and see if I could find anybody who shared my enthusiasm - both for the film and for Jeff Bridges. But I was just waiting for the right moment. I did not want to interrupt more weighty discussions, or I was too busy myself. But now that Joni has been put on a Dudes list, well I just can't keep still any longer! So without any further ado: who has seen this film, and does anyone love it as much as I do? My appreciation is threefold: I think it is a really great "little" film, full of wonderful details and observations. Secondly, the music, produced and partly written by T-Bone Burnett, really rocks, and the lyrics are great too. I have been singing lines like "funny how falling feels like flying - for a little while" and "I used to be somebody - now I am somebody else" for weeks on end. Thirdly, and most surprisingly, I have to admit that I have fallen under the spell of Jeff Bridges (or even worse, of Bad Blake) really badly, even though at the time when I was watching the film I was thinking: "My god, he is disgusting"! But a few hours later, when the film had sunk in, I had to pinch myself because my hormone levels had been raised to truly dangerous levels! I even did some research, but seeing as Mr Bridges has been happily married for 33 years and the woman seems nice, I have decided to admit defeat gracefully. (Besides, I seem to remember that Michelle Pfeiffer in an interview had also admitted to a giant crush on him, so it may have been difficult even without Mrs Bridges-of-33-years...) So if anybody knows what I am talking about and wants to join my mutual support group, let me know! But I will see it. The story I got is Bad Blake was a portrayal of Billy Joe Shaver, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeJ4kp1AwY4. The Dude spent quite a bit of time with him prior to the movie trying to get into character. Billy Joe like Joni he not only writes the songs but he lives them. Hope you enjoy the video and tell me there is no similiarities to Bad Blake. Still stoke that Joni made the list of Worlds Greatest Dudes. peace~~gene p.s. check out his other video on utube---he's a freaking legend. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Jul 2010 18:35:12 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: great Dudes in History and Crazy heart (now NJC) Jeff is The Dude. The Big Lebowski is maybe the funniest movie ever made. John Goodman was incredible, and said it was the most fun he ever had making a movie. I rarely go to the movies, but I saw Crazy Heart in the theatre when it first came out, and saw it's polar opposite, Alice in Wonderland the same day. CH was maybe weak in the plot department, but Bridges' acting and the great music carried it. I learned "Fallin' and Flyin'" and played it at my last gig. Maggie is always great, and Colin Farrell was very believable as Bad's successful protege. Randy says SEE IT !
