I tried to buy this cd through Amazon a year or so ago and became extremely frustrated when they put off delivery several times and finally said it was unavailable. Why did they have it listed for sale on their web-site if it wasn't available, for crying out loud? But I digress. Is anyone else familiar with this recording? I listened to it for the first time last night and it's incredible! Some beautiful singing and wonderful small combo jazz behind it. Made me think of Billie Holiday's Verve recordings. In fact there's a nice version of 'I Don't Want to Cry Anymore' that stands up pretty darn well against Billie's (and most of you know that's high praise coming from me). Also Annie's rendition of 'You're Nearer' is about as pretty as Judy's on 'Judy at Carnegie Hall' (again, high praise from moi). Recorded in 1959. One of the customer reviews on Amazon called it a 'lost classic'. I think that person is probably right on about this one. Magic can happen even in our dreary everyday lives. If any of you stumbled acrosss Jane Siberrys live concert from Orchard Valley yesterday night, well norwegian time, than you know about magic. Jane Siberry pours out magic in her performance. She really touches me on a deep, deep level. Yesterday she sang a wonderful, wonderful song about her mother, and her mother was in the audience. This was a lesson in forgiveness a lesson recocniliation. We could all learn. And than; the magic: I work in a library. This week me and two young kids who were working for me were trying to make a system in the chaotic library cellar. Well we found dozens og unopened cds. Being a small library we can't possibly put in all the CDS sent to us. So they were just packed away. But I found it kinda sad to- This was music. Made by people, who had poured out their souls and talents and they were locked away in this cellar. So we decided to share them. We called upon a few people among them a small jazz shop in Oslo. I talked to this man and we agreed I should bring them. So i did, He was so happy. And I was just happy that someone could use them. He gave me cofee from the cafi, for free. And when I asked the woman who runs it if I could listen to Herbies new cd, she said, bring it with you, Its yours. Its for free. This was magic. This was one week after a taxi driver threatened to sue me because I didn't have enough money on my credit card. Next day I paid it all, but he was so unsympathetic, I just lost all faith in humans for a day or two... I hope some of you will buy my book when it is finished. I will try to find some people who can help me with the distirbution in UK, US and Canada Rest of europe I guess I'll take myself. We're OK here. We live about a km from where some of the rioting happened and yet, if you weren't watching the news, you would have no idea what was going on. People were out walking their dogs and taking their kids out after the rain and, in the meantime, just blocks away, other people were smashing shop windows and burning police cars. It started as a peaceful protest by labour unions and various groups (it was supposed to be "family friendly") but, thanks to a few hundred crazies, it quickly deteriorated into mayhem. I'm finding the live blogs interesting and I think that, between the earthquake the other day and what's happening here this weekend, I *get* Twitter now. Even if it's just info bytes and not a really good source of actual news, it is a quick way to find out if something's going on somewhere. Interesting to note that many of the people arrested who have been found with unusual weapons in their cars are not from here. Sadly, the messages of the peaceful protesters who have something to say have been drowned out by the shouting of the so-called anarchists, and no one really has any idea whether they have a message at all. Here are some pages I've been following - lots of pictures too. http://thestar.blogs.com/g20/ http://www.ctv.ca/news/ http://www.cbc.ca/canada/g20streetlevel/2010/06/g20-weekend-liveblog.html ________________________________ From: Mark To: joni Sent: Sun, June 27, 2010 2:32:49 AM Subject: njc - Toronto & Catherine Hey Catherine. This excerpt from the official history of the Mariposa validates Joni's memories of her early days at the festival: "1963 was a different story and a turning point in the history of the festival. Over 8000 tickets sold in advance and, by the festival weekend, festival goers nearly outnumbered the townsfolk. Restaurants ran out of food, the roads and highways were jammed, and crowding and confusion reigned. The small police force was overwhelmed as it struggled to cope with the crowds, the drunkenness, and the petty vandalism. The backlash from the townsfolk and their elected officials was quick and unkind. The days of Mariposa Folk Festival in Orillia were, so it seemed, done. The folkies and their rowdy behaviour were no longer welcome." I saw Joni several times at Mariposa in Toronto and those memories are some of my most treasured.
