Just want to let you know that RLJ's post-Pop Pop discography is worth checking out. My favorite of these, and if you're only going to snag one, is "Evening Of My Best Day" which was one of my favorite records in the year it came out. "It's Like This" is also one I love, it's an all covers record (and you know about me and covers) but NOTHING like "Pop Pop" (which I adore btw). She really picks some obscure tracks and has some wonderful folks on board like Ben Folds. (And hey, you can hear the wonderful Steely Dan song "Show Biz Kids" without having to listen to Fagen!). "Traffic From Paradise" is uneven but when it hits the mark ("Stewart's Coat" among others) it is RLJ at her best. "The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard" really took a number of plays to get to me, but when it finally did I really dug it. Same goes for "Balm In Gilead" which came out last year and I'm still working on it. I have a couple that you mentioned on my amazon wish/remind myself list, and I may even revisit "Pop Pop." I try to do that w/artists whose other work I really love. Sometimes things you didn't like a decade ago sound better to you with a different perspective. (Or vice versa, occasionally!) Gotta keep that mind pried open as long as possible, right? And despite not wanting to revisit that silly Steely Dan dustup, I forgot to say this: One of my former boyfriend/musician guys with whom I used to argue about the Dan, and whose ears and keyboard playing I respect a lot, had me talked into covering one or two of their songs for a proposed band recently--and we aren't even sleeping together anymore! I know Les is also a big Pop Pop fan. Her version of My Funny Valentine may be the best ever of that song recorded. Yes, even better than Sinatra's. Says Fagan: "This is a real band, not some TV thing like American Idol" The tour starts Aug 19 in Connecticut. Elton John accepted $1 million to perform at Rush Limbaugh's recent 4th wedding. Limbaugh is a noted homophobe (or so we thought). Elton also played to 50 thousand in Israel. Apparently responding to news that Elvis Costello amongst others cancelled concerts there in protest of the government's agressive policies, he said in royal fashion We do not cherry-pick our consciences. I guess not. Neil Young's 2003 enviro-concept album Greendale has been made into a graphic novel, which I think, is another word for a fancy comic book. Says Young: "I think its empowering for young women. Eric Clapton's live album from his 1969 tour with Delaney and Bonnie and a bunch of their well known friends, "On Tour With Eric Clapton" is being expanded by Rhino Records onto a 4 disc set with over 3 hours of unreleased tuneage from the likes of Dave Mason, Rita Coolidge, George Harrison ("Mysterioso" for legal reasons) and "many others". Release date is July 27 Despite John Belushi being one of the biggest druggies of his era, the Vatican has called "The Blues Brothers" movie a "Catholic classic", and added it to their list of movies recommended for their flock, joining such feel-good hits as "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Mel Gibson's "The Passion of The Christ" And finally: The estate of Elvis Presley has signed a deal with Hasbro Toys to release an Elvis version of Mr. Potato Head. Two versions, actually, one in leather, the other in a jumpsuit. How about a twin set with Elton and Limbaugh, too? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jun 2010 20:55:21 -0700 From: "gene" Subject: Re: Misc Music News njc Thanks Randy for the info. But I think I'm going to stick to smaller and intimate venues where the performers are much more accessible. House concerts. I've discovered (though the performers have been around for many many years) some pretty good music. The likes of Ray Bonneville, Keith Greeninger, Ellis Paul, Sherry Austin, Blame Sally, Drew Nelson, Martin Sexton, and many more unknowns. There are a lot of very very good singer/songwriters out there. Drew Nelson said it best: "up there in the spotlight your a million miles away.. every ounce of energy you try to give away.. as the sweat pours out your body like the music that you play. It's cheaper too.
