I actually thought Big Mike would win for those reasons and that week would be the shock Crystal exit. I think Lee was sand-bagging a bit, he has had two cd's out so I thought of him and Crystal as pretty similar, both knowing who and what they are and where they want to go. Whereas Mike I felt just wanted to be successful (not saying that is a bad thing) and would be steered wherever they wanted him to go. I am really surprised Crystal is still there, oh cynical me. I don't know how that works. I would think that the winner is more "beholden" to AI than the runners up. I'll bet the winners are VERY directed by their contract and handlers. In Crystal's case, should she win, she should definitely be allowed to do her own music. Personally, I'm dying for something new! (Of course, I'm completely out of the loop, musically, and maybe I'm surrounded by "new" and just don't know it.) As for "Tin Angel", I always find it interesting when an artist writes a song in a style where the music and lyrics are in contradiction. " Joni says she sometimes feels the need to take the edge off of a heavy song via lighter, less dark music. Think Cherokee Louise. I guess this could be the reverse of that - adding some darkness to an inherently bright moment. However, this seems to be a dark, moody guy, so in that sense the music is more reflective of him as the subject of her attraction rather than her mood. Or perhaps his moodiness has put a damper on what ought to be her own joyous reaction, and it has rubbed off on her as she reflects upon it. How she discovered his dark moodines in one day seems a bit alien to me. Or, perhaps "today" is figurative - I am fine with that. More likely, what bothers me about Tin Angel is that I have trouble relating to the apparent attraction to such darkness. When I have felt such an attraction, it has generally been the "helper" in me that was aroused. But I have found acting on that attraction to be pretty futile - which became pretty obvious pretty quickly, in my limited experience. Joni seems willing to "take a look around it though" from time to time. With the guy in Tin Angel, and with the guy/drug scene in the song Blue. And with the strange boy in Strange Boy, which was another song that bothered me a bit lyrically. Geesh - you'd think I was Joni's personal critic or something, instead of her biggest fan. And yeah, it's probably more the helper in that person who feels a need to want to help someone else. I could be mistaken but I think women are more likely to be attracted to moody or troubled men, and probably young women (who don't know any better) more than older ones. Maybe it's a maternal thing and I guess it's also pretty self-destructive at that. Think about the fascination with vampires and so on. Those "Twilight" movies are ridiculously popular. ________________________________ From: "Bobsart48@aol.com" To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Cc: joni@smoe.org Sent: Fri, May 21, 2010 11:45:39 AM Subject: Re: Clouds review However, this seems to be a dark, moody guy, so in that sense the music is more reflective of him as the subject of her attraction rather than her mood. I understand the need for alternative fuels but my immediate response to the article was "Danger, Will Robinson!" and I'm not exactly sure why. I suppose all the Hollywood hype about killer strains capable of reproducing themselves has played into my reaction. I will be interested to see whether all this leads to synthetic fuel production and I'll be happy to see less need to tap into the earth's core. Here is what I know so far. The Official Hotel is" The Astor Crown Plaza 739 Canal Street (at the foot of Bourbon Street) New Orleans, La. 504-962-0516 This is an elegant hotel right in the French Quarter where rooms are normally $179 per night. The have offered us rooms for $99 per night and they will make a donation to the RPF based on the amount of rooms sold. We will also have a suite there for perhaps a farewell party on Sunday night. I am holding 40 rooms there through a company I use for hotels when I am touring so I did not have to put a deposit down. I will let the rooms we do not use go a week or so out. I know many of you will rent cars and such but for the people who want to save and car pool and such I plan on renting a big van to cart people around. I live about 20-25 min from the hotel so for that night we would want some transpo so that there are no DWI's etc. The Howlin' Wolf is walking distance to the hotel and a $5 cab ride. I will be able to pick some of you up at the airport in my vehicle. Thursday Night Sept 2, 2010 6pm-8pm Concert Showcase Preview at The Ogden Museum of Southern Art. This will be two sets of music featuring artists from the JMDL as well as the Local and National Acts that will be performing at the Howlin' Wolf + interview. 8:30-10:30 Festival Gala Dinner at Rio Mar Restaurant (a seafood destination) This could change but this is Plan A. The meal will be all inclusive meal, tax and tip $60. Menu TBA 10:30-Till-Touristing in the New Orleans French Quarter. A few surprises here. Friday Night Sept 3, 2010 7;30pm-Midnight-Pazfest II Concert for Ruth Paz Hospital for Burns and Pediatric Surgury Donation will be $20 that will benefit the Ruth Paz Foundation. So far this is the line up of artists who have agreed to participate : Susan Cowsill (The Coninental Drifters) Jimmy Robinson (Woodenhead) Beth Patterson Alexis Marceaux Glasgow Band Ingrid Lucia Preservation Hall Jazz Band Randy Jackson (Zebra) DJ G-Cue (Mikey Paz) Bill Davis (Dash Rip Rock) Dave Easely (Brian Blade Fellowship) Alex McMurray (Royal Fingerbowl) Jesse Boyd Trio George Porter, Jr. (The Meters) Brian Thomas (New York) Victor Johnson (Atlanta) Kay Ashley (San Fransisco) Leslie Smith Sharon Martin Davis Rogan (YES of Treme fame) Brian Stoltz (Funky Meters) I Have so many more people that are considering it and some really HUGE surprises in that department that I cannot let out of the bag at the moment. > Saturday Night Sept 4, 2010 4pm-Till dawn- The Official JMDL Party/BB Que Cook Out/Performances/Song Circle. This will be much like the one we had the first time 10 YEARS AGO. It will be a modest price for food and booze. I plan on inviting the local artists as well. In August we will decide what we are cooking and come up with a per person price for this based on what we spend for food and booze. > Sunday Sept 5, 2010 I am wide open for suggestions on this day. There is SO much going on in New Orleans that weekend that I thought we might leave it open to discussion on the list of what we do. I am totally open to more partying at my place. The hotel is also an option for a performance event there for JMDL folk. It is Southern Decadence Weekend and there are always some amazing events centered around that as well as the biggest free freak show on the planet all up and down Bourbon St. Monday Sept 6, 2010 Free medical and psychiatric care at local participating hospitals. Free ambulance shuttle service to the airport for people needing to get back to the other lives. The last time we did this we had 35 JMDL people in town and that made it a huge success. I hope this time it fits within YOUR schedule to be here with us. I have already heard from 2 people I was hoping could come but have other obligations to family etc that will not be able to be here in spirit. One of those people has agreed to send something in her place that will be at the Howlin' Wolf. I am open to all the help I can get on this and am working on a few other ideas to help me raise more money for the Ruth Paz Burn Unit. We have set up a Yahoo group for people who are coming at the Yahoo groups site and of course it is Pazfest II http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/PazFestII/ Thats all for now.
