Someone I, err, know, is hoping to have his music promoted on NPR, but we weren't sure if it would be worth it - seeing as the Americans don't tend to be enthusiastic about anything public! But I will take it that NPR is an exception. Take care, and thanks again Bene - -- *** bnw ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 May 2010 04:34:09 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Remembering Smurph (vljc) Happy birthday, Bob Murphy. More Retro! Joni Covers, Volume #50 I know what you mean, Stewart...I didn't re-listen to #50 but I did have some flashbacks on some of those tracks. Veddddy, Scary! Luckily these days there are FAR more in the positive column than the negative. I do have the unplugged Nazareth version, along with a couple other studio versions, a live version, a mono version, and a version by Doogie White that was done for a Nazareth Tribute album. This cover spawned a ton of heavy metal covers of TFT and made Joni a lot of money. It's in the top 20 of Joni covers, I would hope she appreciates it but she'd probably just call them plagiarists and fakes - ha. And I still think the opening riff on the electric version inspired "Barracuda" by Heart. You can choose MP3s or AIFFs, and the artwork and everything is there, too. http://www.janesiberry.com/janesiberry/music.html I think she's amazing - I love how she writes and how she sounds, and (maybe even more than that,) I love how gentle and kind she is, and how genuinely gracious and thankful she is to those of us who've been in her audiences. If you don't know her music, now would be a great time to explore. Download something, and maybe make a small contribution, if you wanna, to fund the next project. My favorite album's probably "Bound By The Beauty," but if you asked me tomorrow, I'd probably give you a different answer. For lack of a better word, and I mean "nutty" as a compliment. She did some things I always wanted the courage to do (gave up all, or at least, most of her stuff a few years ago, went travelling, changed her name, then changed it back again, didn't try to rationalize any of that, just did it - that kind of thing). I got that email about her making her stuff available for free and I downloaded all the stuff I don't have. But I also felt kinda guilty about it, because that's just the way I am. Drives me crazy, but there you go. She did say to "pay it forward" and share with others, so OK. (She also says that, because people have asked about it, you can send her some money if you want, to go towards her next album.) I think I'm with you on "Bound by the beauty," both the song itself and the whole album, but it has equal time with "When I was a boy." ________________________________ From: Cindy Vickery To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Mon, May 17, 2010 5:07:55 PM Subject: A gift from Jane Siberry - NJC Jane Siberry has made all (really - ALL!) of her recorded catalog free to download at her site, as a gift.
