Was pretty obvious that either Casey or Big Mike was going home, so no surprise there. The solo performances were somewhat ho-hum, although I really liked Mamasox' take on "I'm Allright", she shifted to that funk rhythym mid-song and did her own thing with it, I liked the energy and I've liked her from Day 1 anyway. I do feel kind of sorry for her goofy-looking baby-daddy though. He is so dumped in about a year or less. And I'll give Lee points for picking a tricky song to sing (Kiss From A Rose) and not botching it up too badly. Casey and Mike sang lazily and risk-free and I was bored with them almost instantly. And Crystal's duet with Lee was AWESOME. For the FIRST time, Lee really pushed himself vocally because he knew that he had to, the harmonies were spot on, and while the camera work was annoying, it didn't bother me all that much. I enjoyed Casey & Mike's duet as well, but not as much though Casey's guitar skills were well-displayed. Jamie Foxx is a psycho, that's all I'll say about that. And Daughtry's performance was one of the few "star" appearances that was tolerable and even bordering on enjoyable. OK, so next week it'll be Casey, and than a toss-up. I'm rooting for my gal Mamasox. Since both of them are songwriters, it'd be cool if they let them perform an original instead of a cover. Well, I'm settling into Denver and back into my old routine of reading the list in the morning with my coffee. Yay! RE: american idol: You guys are so funny. I haven't watched it since the first (Kelly Clarkson) season, but I feel like I've watched this season vicariously. More importantly, I LOVE that *Jerry* dubbed himself "the gay cougar." Not only did it make me laugh, it made me think about the fact that men who chase young tail of any persuasion are never called cougars. Obviously, I've thought a lot about the old double standard before, but never thought about it in relation to that noxious "cougar" term. *Jimmy:* So You Think You Can Dance! We have even more in common! You probably already know that this season's gonna be the newbies vs. the faves from previous seasons. It should be spectacular. I don't think I mentioned that I listened to Hejira for the first time on my drive from LA to Denver. I'd been saving it because it seemed appropriate for my own Hejira. It was perfect. I cried buckets during those 1000 + miles. Not from hurt, exactly, but from upheaval and confusion and anxiety. What would we do without Joni's music to help us through things? And really, music in general? We wouldn't be the same species, to be sure. And, as an aside, isn't it odd when a person seems to have no need for music? My mother is that way. The only CDs she owns are a handful of soundtracks I bought her from movies we'd seen together and liked. She never listens to music! She didn't even know who Joni was when I started talking about her, and the lady is 64 years old. She also didn't know (until I told her about them) The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin... of course she knew the Beatles, but she stopped liking their music "when it got weird" i.e. after "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." I love her more than anything, but sometimes I think, "where did I come from?" I believe in reincarnation, so I guess my question should be "when did I come from?" So good to be back amongst my peeps. Loving hooking up with several of you on Facebook. If you've sent an invite and I've not responded, please send me a note! I get a lot of random invites, so if I'm not sure who someone is, I just ignore it. My daughter (who is 23) knows a guy who was interested in her as a girlfriend, but he wasn't interested in music or art. My daughter is an artist and she loves music. She just didn't get that guy at all (which explains why she wouldn't be interested in him as a boyfriend.) Without art and music, what the heck is there? ________________________________ From: Leah Welborn To: joni@smoe.org; Les Irvin ; Jimmy Stewart Sent: Fri, May 14, 2010 1:28:12 PM Subject: Greetings from Denver, meandering thoughts, etc. She also didn't know (until I told her about them) The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin... of course she knew the Beatles, but she stopped liking their music "when it got weird" i.e. after "I Wanna Hold Your Hand." I love her more than anything, but sometimes I think, "where did I come from?" I believe in reincarnation, so I guess my question should be "when did I come from?" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 May 2010 20:33:59 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Another Surprise Cover - Stevie Wonder covers Woodstock Sweet~! > Was going to hold out on this one, but today was his birthday so here's > Stevie Wonder doing Woodstock. I heard that was the main reason Stephen Stills didn't make it into the Monkees - his teeth weren't "nice" enough. But look how that turned out - I doubt he'd be regretting it, these days. FWIW (get the SS reference?!) I liked Siobhan, but didn't think she had much range in terms of her interpretation, and that cost her. I do really like Crystal - much more than any of the others. I think she has so much more personality, which will help her carve out her own career in the future once all the Idol crap has died away. But I'd almost rather she came second - look what it's done for Clay Aitken and Adam Lambert!
