Child of the North, are you a jmdler perchance? S/he said this: "I love Pat Metheny's work, but it is sad to not see him with his band - they are so good. My favourite concert though remains his work backing Joni Mitchell. What a great band: Metheny, Jaco Pastorius, Lyle Mays, Michael Brecker and Don Alias. This DVD is worth owning just to see all these talented people on stage together. I've read that phone service, or at least cell phone service, is more expensive in Canada than in most places. I'm curious about how this work in the US and elsewhere. When you buy a phone, like an Iphone, you can't just buy the phone and connect to whichever provider you've got. You have to enter into a contract with them. Some service providers do allow you to pay as you go but they don't seem to be allowing this for the Iphone. right now I'm on a pay-as-you-go thing with Virgin Mobile Canada. It might be cheaper for me to go with a monthly plan but I don't use the phone a lot. I bought it as more of an emergency thing a few years ago when we were going on vacation and I wanted to be able to communicate and not worry about trying to find a phone booth or paying the ridiculously inflated prices that hotels charge you to use a phone. I've researched different companies and plans and end up confused. There's a lot of BS about how service A is better than service B, but there's always fine print and you end up paying pretty much the same no matter who you go with, as far as I'm concerned. Or you get a good deal for a few months and then they jack up the rates. I could get an Iphone through Virgin for $199 or $299 depending on which one, but would have to sign a contract for three years or more and I think I'd have to get a plan that costs $50 a month (I'd have to check that because when I read their stuff, or anyone's for that matter, it's hard to know for sure.) Or I could buy the $299 phone for - get this - $799 and not have to sign a contract and could do pay-as-you go. WTF? Do other countries force you go enter into a contract with a provider to get a particular phone? Does $50 a month sound reasonable? (especially for someone who isn't a big phone user, and that's on top of paying for a landline.) There are a bunch of different service providers here and you'd think the competition would mean better prices for all but it seems to me more that they're in cahoots with one another to keep prices up, because there are lots of suckers willing to pay. You can't walk down the street without some idiot texter-as-they-walk bumping into you. ________________________________ From: Anne Sandstrom To: FMYFL@aol.com Cc: notaro@mail.usf.edu; michael@thepazgroup.com; Bob.Muller@fluor.com; joni@smoe.org Sent: Thu, May 13, 2010 8:23:25 AM Subject: Re: Re: american idol (njc) Ah - will wonders never cease. I pay about $70 a month for both. And many pay much more than that. Jerry On Thu, May 13, 2010 at 10:40 AM, Catherine McKay wrote: > I'm too cheap, and too poor. We invited him over to our table when he was done and in our conversation I told him that he reminded me of Metheny and of course went on to talk about that 1979 band and tour until I noticed his eyes starting to glaze over and I changed the topic. This album is magnificent. I've heard him perform it live twice in the UK recently. He's doing a world tour now and the first half of each concert is the new album performed in its entirety without a break or applause, by his request, until he has left the stage. Very dramatic and powerful. It is in part a grieving process for his mother, as he wrote the songs during the last 3 years of her life, while they all knew her time here was coming to an end. I did not love it on first listen, but rather let it grow on me, after several listens I fell in love with it. Rufus never refers to Joni as one of his sources or mentors, but oddly his sister Martha does, and in fact she uses open tunings most of the time, ala Joni. But Rufus' compositions, and how different each of his albums have been from each other, have always reminded me of Joni's style and depth. I do wonder if she has had a listen? ~Richard p.s. I saw his opera there too. Liked it, a lot. Very Rufusy, Strausian, Puccini-meets-Sunset-Boulevard. ________________________________ From: Gerald Notaro To: Joni List Sent: Wed, May 12, 2010 3:36:27 PM Subject: Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu - NJC I can't praise Rufus Wainwright's new cd enough. It is exactly the type of music Joni claims she writes, gorgeous lieder and song cycle. If she ever gave it a listen, I know she would sing his praises. It is absolutely brilliant. She was so freaking NASAL. It was like watching Ally Sheedy or someone from the movies of my youth (can't quite figure out who she reminds me of) singing through her nose and then screaming. And she had to talk back every second they gave her advice... I'm telling you, I just didn't get it. Even her screaming that everyone loves - ugh. Whatever. And Casey - well, that hillbilly shoulda been back to Butcher Holler weeks ago. And while I love Lee and Crystal, they picked the stupidest songs ever this week. They all did, but especially those two. Lee was singing so fast, I was losing my breath just listening, and Crystal, well... much as I like me some Kenny Loggins, I shook my head with the "Caddyshack" thing. Did anyone else notice that they whitened Crystal's teeth??? Now on to Survivor tonight....
