I can't wait to hear it. I was just reading about it on amazon.ca and the people there are mostly giving it 5/5 stars (which may not mean much, given that people who review things on amazon are usually people who like the stuff, but some like and still give 3/5 or 4/5.) ________________________________ From: Gerald Notaro To: Joni List Sent: Wed, May 12, 2010 3:36:27 PM Subject: Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu - NJC I can't praise Rufus Wainwright's new cd enough. I also got this weird visual of Tiny Tim watching Casey last night. The hair, the little whatever-he-was-playing (was it a mandolin? an 8-string ukulele? a teeny guitar?) I didn't mind Crystal's song, but I think she got a bit shrieky and that's the problem with certain singers, and it's what started irritating me with Siobhan the last few weeks she was on: shriek if you must, but only if it adds somehow to the song, not just because you CAN do it (it just reminds me too much of Mariah Carey and her ilk, or Aretha wannabes.) I thought most of the performances were a snoozefest though. I felt the same nausea (the dizzy, dancing way you feel?) with the cameras spinning around Crystal and Lee. I thought their duet was OK, but I didn't understand why the judges were raving about it so much. Maybe because the rest of the show was BOOOORRRING! I find AI tends to get very boring once they're down to the last few though. It's at that point that I realize I don't really give a crap who wins. Sadly, once the show is over, I generally forget all of the performers altogether. I think watching the process is more interesting near the beginning. This particular season has been pretty boring. As well, there are certain songs that should be banned forever from AI. That would include Bryan Adams "have you ever loved a woman?" or whatever it's called, the one that big Mike and Casey duetted last night. I could make a list, but I won't bore anyone any further. I think this is Simon's last season, so I'm sure that's it for AI in any case. Without him, even the judges aren't worth watching. ________________________________ and why didn't someone tell Crystal that the entire power of that song (I'm Alright by Kenny Loggins) is in the rest after "I'm alright"? Pretty much have agreed with the folks that have been voted off so far. Siobhan was pretty awesome but she proved to be not very versatile imo. The pattern became pretty much the same...slow, low, faster, yell. Hopefully she can further her career because she does have some talent. Haven't seen Tuesday's show yet, planning on watching Tues/Weds on Thursday night with neighbors and #1 son. I'm still enjoying it and am rooting for Mamasox. Betting that Big Mike goes home tonight. (I have a "mentor" story I'd share, but it's better done orally, not in writing, and I'm sure you'd have to have been there to get it anyway, but I just had to mention it anyway, didn't I?) I was also shocked to learn a few weeks ago, when she was on, that Shania Twain was a huge as she is a week or two ago. You never really know, do you? I agree with you about Mariah in "Precious." I thought she was very believable and how brave of her to go there without makeup and stilettos (that's only half sarcastic - I think I saw her on some talk show talking about how hard it was to go without stilettos - oh, really?) That whole movie was incredibly well-done but I couldn't watch it again. It came across as very realistic to me and at times, I thought I was watching a documentary. Mo'nique (sp?) was amazing too and very brave (no sarcasm this time) to play the role of that awful mother and yet, you can understand how that stuff develops and how that whole cycle of abuse goes on. Same thing with "The Blind Side," which I just saw. You could see how people get sucked down and into that whole quagmire of drugs, abuse, neglect, crappy self-esteem, joining gangs, being at the mercy of gangs, being the kingpin of a gang, or the follower of the kingpin. ________________________________ From: "Bob.Muller@Fluor.com" To: Catherine McKay Cc: Anne Sandstrom ; joni@smoe.org Sent: Wed, May 12, 2010 5:20:16 PM Subject: Re: american idol (njc) <(it just reminds me too much of Mariah Carey and her ilk, or Aretha wannabes.)> I agree with you, but keep in mind that Mariah has more #1 singles than ANYBODY...Elvis, The Beatles, you name it.
